Arrival in Morocco's Sacred Town

After months of anticipation, Jan and I have finally arrived in Moulay Idriss Downtown, Morocco! It feels surreal to be standing in this historic town, ready to immerse ourselves in its culture and history. Our journey from Amsterdam, with a layover in Casablanca and a train ride to Meknes, was quite long, but the excitement kept us going. Now, as we settle into our stay with a local family, I can already sense that this trip will be an unforgettable experience.

As a cultural liaison, I've always been fascinated by the intricate tapestry of traditions and histories that make up our world. And as someone originally from Saudi Arabia but now living in the Netherlands, I find myself constantly bridging different cultures, a role that enriches my perspective as a traveler. It’s a joy to share these experiences with you, my readers, and I hope my stories inspire you to embark on your own journeys of discovery.

Our first day in Moulay Idriss was all about getting acquainted with the town and soaking in its unique atmosphere. The clear June weather, with temperatures hovering around a pleasant 22°C (72°F), made it perfect for exploring the Medina.

Exploring Moulay Idriss Downtown

As we stepped into the heart of Moulay Idriss Downtown, Jan and I were immediately captivated by the Medina's charm. The town, nestled on the slopes of Mount Zerhoun, is a maze of narrow, winding streets lined with whitewashed houses, each telling its own story. The air was filled with the sounds of daily life – children playing, artisans at work, and the melodic call to prayer echoing from the mosques. I made sure to have my headscarf with me, as a sign of respect for the local customs.

Stepping into Moulay Idriss is like stepping back in time, where every corner holds a piece of Morocco's rich history and vibrant culture.

We spent the morning wandering through the Medina, marveling at the traditional Moroccan architecture. The buildings, primarily white with touches of green, stand out beautifully against the clear blue sky. We learned that Moulay Idriss is considered one of Morocco's holiest towns, and until recently, it was closed to non-Muslims, adding an air of mystery to its allure. Today, it welcomes visitors from all over the world, eager to explore its rich heritage.

A Taste of Local Cuisine

Our culinary journey began with breakfast at Cafe restaurant ain zwawk. The cafe was bustling with locals, and the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and traditional Moroccan pastries filled the air. We savored a simple yet delicious breakfast of *msemen* (Moroccan pancakes) and mint tea, a perfect start to our day. I found the combination of sweet and minty flavors to be both refreshing and energizing. According to online reviews, the cafe is known for its breathtaking views, which we were fortunate enough to enjoy as we planned our day.

For lunch, we ventured to SCORPION HOUSE, a restaurant known for its incredible views and unique Moroccan cuisine. The climb up the narrow, stair-cased streets to reach the restaurant was an adventure in itself, but the panoramic vistas from the terrace were well worth the effort. The owner, Mike Richardson, has created a truly special place, blending traditional Moroccan flavors with modern culinary techniques. We enjoyed a selection of Moroccan salads, each bursting with fresh, seasonal ingredients like avocados and artichokes. The *zaalouk* (eggplant and tomato salad) was particularly memorable, with its smoky flavor and a hint of cumin. Jan thoroughly enjoyed the Chermoula Sardines, while I opted for the vegetable pastille rolls.

As the day drew to a close, we dined at Restaurant Moulay Idriss, a place recommended by our host family for its authentic Moroccan dishes. The restaurant exuded a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the staff treated us like family. I ordered a tagine with chicken and preserved lemons, a classic Moroccan dish that never disappoints. The flavors were rich and complex, and the chicken was incredibly tender. Jan chose the couscous with vegetables, a hearty and flavorful dish that showcased the best of Moroccan cuisine. It was the perfect end to a day of exploration, and left us feeling deeply connected to the local culture.

Shopping at The Anou Cooperative

In the afternoon, we visited The Anou Cooperative, a fair-trade store that supports local artisans. As someone passionate about cultural heritage preservation, I was eager to explore the crafts and support the community. The cooperative is an award-winning organization that empowers over 600 artisans by providing them with a platform to sell their products directly to consumers. We admired a variety of handmade items, from intricately woven rugs to beautifully embroidered textiles. I was particularly drawn to a stunning Berber rug with vibrant colors and geometric patterns. I learned that the Anou Cooperative ensures that artisans receive a fair price for their work, promoting sustainable livelihoods and preserving traditional crafts. I ended up buying a beautiful, hand-embroidered computer case made by Naima, a local artisan. Knowing that my purchase directly supports her family and her children's education made the experience even more meaningful.

Reflections on the Day

Our first day in Moulay Idriss was nothing short of magical. From exploring the Medina to savoring local cuisine and supporting local artisans, we immersed ourselves in the town's rich culture and history. As we walked back to our host family's home, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the town. The panoramic views from the hills were breathtaking, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this unique place.

As I reflect on our day, I am struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Moroccan people. Everyone we met was kind, welcoming, and eager to share their culture with us. I am also impressed by the town's commitment to preserving its heritage and supporting local artisans. It is a testament to the resilience and creativity of the Moroccan people.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, we plan to visit the *Site Archéologique de Volubilis* and the *Tombeau de Moulay Idriss 1er*. I am particularly excited about exploring the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that offers a glimpse into the region's ancient past. We also plan to have breakfast at La Baraka, lunch at Volubilis restaurant, and dinner at Café Restaurant Ksar Pharaon. And if time allows, we might visit Dar Zerhoune for a drink.

As I prepare for another day of exploration, I am filled with anticipation and excitement. Moulay Idriss has already captured my heart, and I cannot wait to discover more of its hidden gems. I encourage you to follow along on our journey and experience the magic of Morocco for yourself.

Until tomorrow,

Farida
