A Day of History and Unexpected Delights

Today was a day of contrasts, a journey that took us from the serene, historic villages nestled in the mountains to the bustling, flavorful streets of Kanazawa. It’s days like these that remind me why I love to travel – the unexpected discoveries, the immersion in different cultures, and the joy of sharing it all with my family.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at A_RESTAURANT. Fully energized, we set out early for Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses. The journey itself was stunning, driving through valleys painted with the vibrant hues of autumn. Even though I miss the colorful scarves of Azrou, I have found the nature here to be a worthy replacement. As we approached Gokayama, the landscape transformed into a scene straight out of a postcard – quaint villages with steeply pitched thatched roofs, designed to withstand the heavy snowfall of the region.

We first visited Kanda House, a beautifully preserved example of gassho-zukuri architecture. Built around 1850, this house once belonged to a family who made their living brewing sake. Sofia was fascinated by the intricate wooden framework and the steep, thatched roof. I found myself appreciating the ingenuity and craftsmanship that went into creating these homes, perfectly adapted to their environment. We climbed the ladders to explore each of the four floors, each filled with glimpses into the past. I was sure to take my camera, since the surrounding landscapes were stunning and perfect for photography. I was happy I didn't forget it, unlike my travel adapter!

Exploring Ainokura village was like stepping back in time. The village is smaller and quieter than Shirakawa-go, offering a more authentic experience. We wandered through the narrow streets, admiring the gassho houses and the peaceful atmosphere. The crisp mountain air and the gentle rustling of leaves created a sense of tranquility that was a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It was so quiet and peaceful. It was a welcome change of pace.
Travel is about the gorgeous feeling of teetering in the unknown.

For lunch, we headed to Tawara Restaurant in Kanazawa, a place recommended for its unique blend of French and Japanese flavors. The restaurant itself was intimate and inviting, with a cozy atmosphere that made us feel right at home. The chef's dedication to his craft was evident in every dish, each one a work of art that showcased local ingredients and innovative techniques. The menu was a delightful surprise, with each course offering a new and exciting combination of tastes and textures. Klaus was particularly impressed with the steak course, which featured shaved truffle and a rich, savory sauce. I was surprised to not find this on the Michelin restaurant list. The staff accommodated my shellfish allergy without any issue. It reminded me of the simple, flavorful dishes my mother used to make back in Azrou, Morocco, using ingredients fresh from our garden. It's amazing how food can transport you back to cherished memories. Every dish was flavorful and incorporated local ingredients.

After our delightful lunch, we decided to venture into Kanazawa’s culinary scene with a dinner at Hay Naku! Philippine restaurant. It was a surprising choice, I admit, but one that proved to be incredibly rewarding. As someone who enjoys experiencing different cultures, I was excited to try something new and unexpected. The restaurant itself was cozy and inviting, with a lively atmosphere that made us feel welcome from the moment we walked in. The aroma of spices and grilled meats filled the air, creating a sensory experience that was both comforting and intriguing. We started with the pork sisig, a Filipino staple made with finely chopped pork, seasoned with soy sauce, chili, and vinegar. The dish was served on a sizzling hot plate, and the combination of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors was simply irresistible. Sofia loved the halo-halo, a traditional Filipino dessert made with shaved ice, sweet beans, fruits, and ice cream. It was a colorful and refreshing treat that perfectly capped off our meal.

To end the day, Klaus and I decided to sneak off to JIGGER BAR St.Louis for a nightcap. The bar had a great atmosphere, and the bartenders were true mixologists, crafting cocktails with precision and flair. I enjoyed a local cocktail made with Noto salt, while Klaus opted for a classic whiskey sour. It was the perfect way to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. The bartender mentioned they had won awards at cocktail competitions.

From the serene beauty of Gokayama to the unexpected flavors of Kanazawa, today was a reminder of the richness and diversity of Japanese culture. Tomorrow, we plan to explore more of Kanazawa, including Kanazawa Tours and the Nagamachi District. I’m particularly excited to wander through the Nagamachi District, known for its preserved samurai residences and traditional atmosphere. But for now, it’s time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure.
I am excited to see what tomorrow holds for us, and I look forward to sharing it with you all. Until then, sayōnara!
