Day 8: A Day of Samurai History and Culinary Delights in Kanazawa
Explore Kanazawa's historic Nagamachi district, indulge in local cuisine, and discover unique finds at Kanazawa Loft with family.
Stepping Back in Time and Savouring Local Flavours
Today was a beautiful blend of history, culture, and delicious food. It's days like these that remind me why I love travelling – the chance to immerse myself in a different world and create lasting memories with my family.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at The Godburger. It felt a bit like a taste of home. Sofia was thrilled, and even Klaus, who usually prefers traditional breakfasts, admitted it was a great start to the day. I opted for their vegetarian burger, and it was surprisingly delicious – a delightful mix of mushrooms, onions, and seasonal vegetables.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Nagamachi District. It was like stepping back in time. The well-preserved samurai houses, cobblestone streets, and earthen walls transported us to the Edo period. It's incredible how much of the historical atmosphere has been maintained. As we walked through the narrow streets, I imagined what life must have been like for the samurai and their families who once lived here.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new ways of life and connecting with the stories of the past.
We decided to join one of the Kanazawa Tours to delve deeper into the history of the area. Our guide was fantastic, sharing fascinating stories and insights that brought the district to life. We learned about the samurai culture, the architecture of the houses, and the significance of the water canals that run through the district. Sofia was particularly interested in the samurai armor and weapons, while Klaus appreciated the intricate details of the traditional gardens.

I found myself reflecting on my own heritage as we wandered through Nagamachi. Growing up in Azrou, Morocco, I was surrounded by the stories of my Berber ancestors. Seeing how the Japanese have preserved their history and traditions in Kanazawa made me appreciate the importance of holding onto our cultural identity.
For lunch, we ventured to Umi & Tsuchi, a restaurant that promised a unique culinary experience. The restaurant's deep blue theme, inspired by Kaga Goshiki, was immediately striking. The dishes were not only delicious but also visually stunning, showcasing the chef's creativity and skill. I tried a selection of Japanese wines, which paired perfectly with the innovative plates. It was a truly unique French experience with a Japanese twist.

In the afternoon, we decided to do a bit of shopping at Kanazawa Loft. This store is a treasure trove of unique and high-quality products. From stationery and cosmetics to household goods and souvenirs, there was something for everyone. Sofia was excited to find some cute Japanese erasers and pens, while I picked up a beautiful washi paper set. Klaus, ever the practical one, found a new travel adapter to replace the one we forgot back in Bonn! It seems I am not the only one who forgets travel essentials.

Before dinner, we took a leisurely stroll through the city, soaking in the atmosphere and enjoying the autumn scenery. The leaves were just starting to change, painting the landscape in hues of red, orange, and gold. It was the perfect backdrop for a family photo.
For our final meal of the day, we chose Genzaemon, a charming restaurant known for its delicious food and delightful service. The proprietress made us feel right at home, and the food was simply outstanding. We savored salt-grilled sea bream, assorted sashimi, and other local delicacies. The fresh fish and Kaga vegetables were a testament to the region's culinary richness. Klaus and I enjoyed some local sake, while Sofia opted for a refreshing juice.

Tomorrow marks the last day of our Kanazawa adventure. We plan to visit the Geisha House Shima and the Kotoji Toro (Stone Lantern). We’ll also be doing some last-minute souvenir shopping at the Ishikawa Local Products Center before heading to the airport. I'm already feeling a bit sad about leaving, but I know we'll cherish the memories we've made here forever.
It has been a truly unforgettable experience, and I can't wait to share more stories from our travels soon. Until then, arigato gozaimasu, Kanazawa!
