Chugging Along Memory Lane

Today was all about embracing the slow life and soaking in the authentic charm of Pelion. Jihad, Lina, and I decided to dedicate the day to experiencing the region's famed attractions, starting with a ride on the Little Train of Pelion, a visit to a local nature shop, and ending with a delightful culinary experience. It was a day of simple pleasures and unforgettable family moments.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Akti. I savored some local pastries with strong Greek coffee, while Jihad opted for a traditional omelet, and Lina enjoyed her usual yogurt with honey. With our bellies full and spirits high, we set off for our first adventure: the Little Train of Pelion.

The Little Train of Pelion, or “Moutzouris” as the locals affectionately call it, promised a unique journey through the heart of the peninsula. Built in the late 19th century, this narrow-gauge railway was originally designed to connect the villages of Mount Pelion with the city of Volos. As we boarded at Ano Lechonia, the train exuded a nostalgic charm with its old wooden carriages painted in vibrant colors. Lina's eyes widened as she took in the sight of the vintage steam engine. I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement as we found our seats among a mix of tourists and locals.

As the train whistle blew, we embarked on a scenic 90-minute journey through lush landscapes. The rhythmic sound of the rails and the gentle摇摆 of the carriages created a soothing ambiance. The train chugged along the slopes of Mount Pelion, offering breathtaking glimpses of gorges and the nearby sea. The open windows allowed us to feel the fresh mountain breeze and inhale the fragrant scent of pine and olive trees. Lina was especially thrilled, pointing out every goat and sheep we passed along the way.

The journey on the Little Train of Pelion is more than just a ride; it's a passage through time, nature, and the soul of a region.

The route itself was a masterpiece of engineering, with narrow tracks and stone bridges that stood as testaments to a bygone era. We crossed the impressive steel bridge of Taxiarchis, designed by Evaristo de Chirico, father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chirico. It was fascinating to learn that the young De Chirico was present during the construction, drawing inspiration that would later appear in his surrealist paintings.

During a brief 15-minute stop at Ano Gatzea, we stretched our legs and took some fun photos in front of the train's vintage engine. Lina, of course, wanted to climb aboard the engine, and Jihad happily obliged, snapping away with his phone. I couldn't help but think of my own father back in Zahlé, who always had a fondness for trains. I made a mental note to send him some pictures from our trip.

Back on the train, the journey continued through tunnels and past more stunning vistas. The train's slow pace allowed us to fully appreciate the beauty of the Pelion Peninsula, with its mix of culture and nature. We passed picturesque villages like Makrinitsa and Tsagarada, known for their traditional architecture and serene atmosphere. I made a note to explore these villages further on another day.

Arriving at Milies, the end of the line, we disembarked and followed a cobbled path towards the village center. The village square was charming, with its old-fashioned square and the church, exceptionally decorated with a wood-carved interior. We took a leisurely stroll, soaking in the local atmosphere before heading back to our car.

Next on our list was a visit to The Shop Of Nature, a local gem I had read about. Located in a quaint corner of Pelion, this shop was a treasure trove of organic food, herbal products, and handmade crafts. As soon as we stepped inside, we were greeted by the inviting aromas of herbs and spices. The shelves were lined with an array of local products, from honey and olive oil to soaps and textiles.

Lina was immediately drawn to the colorful handmade toys, while Jihad browsed the selection of local wines and spirits. I was fascinated by the variety of herbal products, reminiscent of the traditional remedies my grandmother used to make back in Lebanon. I picked up a few items, including some lavender soap and a bottle of local honey, eager to bring a little piece of Pelion back home.

After our shopping excursion, it was time for lunch. We drove to To Kima • Seaside Family Restaurant, a charming eatery with stunning views of the Aegean Sea. The restaurant had a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere, and we were promptly seated at a table overlooking the water. We started with some traditional Greek appetizers, including tzatziki, dolmades, and saganaki. For our main courses, Jihad ordered the grilled octopus, Lina opted for the souvlaki, and I chose the moussaka, a classic Greek dish that I had been craving.

As we savored our meal, we watched the boats bobbing in the harbor and listened to the gentle lapping of the waves. The food was delicious, and the company was even better. Lina kept us entertained with stories from her day, and Jihad and I enjoyed a rare moment of peace and quiet. It felt like the perfect way to unwind and recharge after a busy day.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to SPECIAL DELIGHT restaurant & cocktail bar for dinner. This place was a bit more upscale than our lunch spot, with a chic and modern ambiance. The restaurant offered a mix of Mediterranean and international cuisine, and the cocktail menu was extensive.

We started with some cocktails, a refreshing margarita for me, a classic mojito for Jihad, and a non-alcoholic fruit punch for Lina. For dinner, we shared a few small plates, including the grilled halloumi, the seafood risotto, and the lamb chops. The food was exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. The restaurant also had a live DJ, who played a mix of upbeat and mellow tunes, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere.

After dinner, we took a leisurely stroll along the beach, enjoying the cool evening breeze and the sound of the waves. Lina collected seashells, while Jihad and I held hands and watched the stars. It was a magical moment, one that I knew we would cherish for years to come.

As we drove back to our guesthouse, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the day's experiences. From the nostalgic charm of the Little Train of Pelion to the natural treasures of The Shop Of Nature and the culinary delights of To Kima and SPECIAL DELIGHT, every moment had been special. Pelion had truly captured my heart, and I couldn't wait to see what tomorrow would bring. Tomorrow, we plan to visit the Pelion Ski Centre and View point Portaria. It will be interesting to see these locations now, in the warmer months, and imagine them covered in snow.

The fair of the Holly Cross will be held on September 14th at the central square of Mouresi Village. Maybe we will return to Pelion to see this festival, as well as the Mushroom Festival in October.
