Florentine Discoveries

Today was a day dedicated to exploring the multifaceted artistic landscape of Florence. From the ingenious inventions of Leonardo da Vinci to the contemporary expressions at Museo Novecento, it was a journey through time and creativity. And of course, no day in Florence is complete without indulging in its culinary treasures.

My day started with a delightful breakfast at Atto di Vito Mollica. Nestled near the cathedral, inside Palazzo Portinari Salviati, the restaurant is in the Corte degli Imperatori. The setting was stunning, surrounded by mosaics and frescoes. I savored a traditional Lebanese breakfast, a taste of home, infused with Italian flavors. It was a perfect start to a day filled with exploration and discovery. I made sure to take pictures, knowing Jihad and Lina would love to see the beautiful presentation of the food. I miss them so much, but I know this solo trip is something I needed to do for myself.

Fueled and ready, I headed to the Leonardo da Vinci Interactive Museum. As someone fascinated by how things work, I was excited to see Da Vinci's inventions come to life. The museum was a hands-on experience, allowing me to interact with models of his sketches. I was particularly impressed by the Giant Tank and the Vertical Ornithopter. It was inspiring to see how his ideas, conceived centuries ago, are still relevant today. I even participated in an interactive workshop, which made the experience even more engaging. It reminded me of how much Lina would have loved this place, with all the interactive exhibits. I made a mental note to bring her here someday.

Art is never finished, only abandoned.

Next on my list was the Museo Novecento, dedicated to 20th-century Italian art. Housed in a former pilgrim shelter, the museum offered a comprehensive journey through modern Italian painting and sculpture. I was particularly drawn to Arturo Martini's sculpture La Pisana and Marino Marini's bronze horses. The museum also showcased fashion and theatre, providing a holistic view of Italian modern art. The multimedia installations and video rooms added an immersive element to the experience. It was a stark contrast to the Renaissance art Florence is known for, but equally captivating. As a marketing coordinator with an appreciation for visual arts, I found the museum's thematic and chronological approach fascinating. I spent hours wandering through the exhibits, soaking in the artistic expressions of a different era.

After immersing myself in modern art, I decided to take a stroll through Piazza della Libertà. The square, located at the northernmost point of the old city walls, was constructed in the 19th century when the walls were demolished. In the center stands the Triumphal Arch of the Lorraine, a neoclassical monument that commemorates the arrival of the Grand Duke of Tuscany in 1739. I learned that the square has Roman origins, serving as the northern access point to Roman Florentia. Over the centuries, it has transformed from a fortified gateway to a symbol of liberty and freedom. I enjoyed watching locals and tourists alike enjoying the open space, a testament to Florence's vibrant public life.

My shopping stop for the day was at Massimo Ravinale - Foulard e Accessori esclusivi, Made In Italy. I wanted to find a special scarf for my mother, something that would remind her of Florence. The store offered a beautiful selection of silk scarves and accessories, all made in Italy. I spent a good amount of time browsing, admiring the intricate designs and vibrant colors. The store owner was incredibly helpful, sharing the history and craftsmanship behind each piece. I finally chose a silk scarf with a floral pattern, a perfect blend of Florentine artistry and Italian craftsmanship. I know my mother will love it.

As evening approached, it was time for a late lunch at Cantina Barbagianni. This cozy restaurant is known for its authentic Italian cuisine and warm atmosphere. I ordered the homemade pasta and a glass of local wine. The pasta was perfectly cooked, and the sauce was bursting with flavor. The owner was incredibly kind, making me feel like a regular. It was a delightful culinary experience, a true taste of Florence. I took a moment to reflect on the day, feeling grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful city and its rich cultural heritage.

For dinner, I decided to try Buca San Giovanni Frigest. This restaurant, located in the heart of Florence, is known for its traditional Tuscan dishes. The ambiance was cozy and inviting, and the staff was friendly and attentive. I ordered the risotto and tiramisu, both of which were delicious. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with artistic exploration and culinary delights. As I savored the last bite of tiramisu, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment. Florence had captured my heart, and I knew I would cherish these memories forever.

As I walked back to Locanda Di Mosconi, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the day's experiences. From the interactive exhibits at the Leonardo da Vinci Museum to the modern masterpieces at Museo Novecento, it was a day filled with inspiration and discovery. And of course, the delicious meals at Atto di Vito Mollica, Cantina Barbagianni, and Buca San Giovanni Frigest added a culinary dimension to the adventure. I am already looking forward to tomorrow, my last day in Florence. I plan to visit Palazzo Vecchio, Piazza del Duomo, and Brunelleschi's dome, soaking in the last bits of Florentine beauty before heading back to Toronto. I also plan to visit Locale Firenze, to experience the Florentine bar scene before I leave. It's going to be a busy day, but I am determined to make the most of it. Tonight, I'll rest well, dreaming of the art, architecture, and flavors of Florence.
