Ascending to Florentine Heights

Today was a day of reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, as I dove headfirst into the heart of Florence's historical and artistic soul. From the breathtaking Duomo to the charming leather boutiques, every moment felt like a scene from a movie – a movie I was thrilled to be starring in! I was excited to explore the city's architectural marvels and savor the culinary delights that Florence has to offer.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Winter Garden Restaurant. The ambiance was magical, like dining in a secret garden. The setting was beautiful with flowers everywhere, and a magnificent chandelier hanging from the high ceiling. What a way to start the day! I enjoyed the fresh fruit, cheeses and salumi.

Fueled and ready, I made my way to the Piazza del Duomo, where the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore awaited. The sheer scale of the Duomo is awe-inspiring. Construction began in 1296, with the goal of creating the most sumptuous edifice human invention could devise. The exterior, with its pink, white, and green marble, is stunning, but it's Brunelleschi's red-tiled cupola that truly captures the eye. It's an extraordinary feat of engineering. As I stood there, camera in hand, trying to capture its grandeur, I couldn't help but feel a sense of wonder and respect for the artisans who dedicated their lives to creating such a masterpiece. I learned that the interior of the cathedral is more austere, but there are still notable features like the clock by Paolo Uccello, and the frescoes in the dome by Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari, depicting the Last Judgement.

To visit is to be awed.

Next on my list was climbing Giotto's Campanile. Giotto's slender bell tower illustrates the originality of Florentine Gothic and the significance given to horizontal lines and geometric decoration. The intricate polychrome marble covering the entire 270-foot height is beautiful. The climb was, shall we say, invigorating! There are over 400 steps, and while there's no elevator, the panoramic view of Florence from the top was more than worth the effort. From that vantage point, the Duomo's dome looked even more impressive, and the sprawling cityscape of Florence unfolded before me. I could see the Arno River snaking its way through the city, the terracotta rooftops stretching as far as the eye could see, and the rolling hills of Tuscany in the distance.

After descending from the Campanile, I ventured into the Opera del Duomo Museum. This museum houses works, mostly sculptural, that once adorned the facade of the Duomo, Giotto's campanile and the baptistery. It houses an unparalleled collection of medieval and Renaissance Florentine sculpture, including pieces by Arnolfo di Cambio, Andrea Pisano, Donatello, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Andrea del Verrocchio, Luca della Robbia and Michelangelo. The highlight for me was Michelangelo's Pietà Bandini. I learned that Michelangelo wanted this work to be in the altar near which he expected to be buried in a Roman church, but by 1555, dissatisfied with the marble and his work, he stopped and destroyed part of it. It was a powerful and moving experience to stand before such a work of art, contemplating the artist's vision and the stories it held within.

By this point, my stomach was starting to rumble, so I decided to treat myself to lunch at Cantinetta delle Terme. The reviews I had read promised an authentic Italian experience, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with vintage decor that made me feel like I had stepped back in time. I was recommended pasta with raw shrimp and truffle, and it was without a doubt the best pasta I've ever eaten. The food was presented very well and full flavored. It was the perfect place to recharge before continuing my Florentine adventure.

With renewed energy, I set off in search of the perfect leather souvenir. I had heard about Davide Cerasi Leather Boutique, a small shop known for its high-quality leather goods. The owner spoke great English and was very helpful. The shop had great reviews and was recommended by tripadvisor and Rick Steves. I was looking for a nice brown leather jacket. I found a soft, comfortable, well-fitted leather jacket that didn't feel or fit any differently from the 800-euro jacket a few streets away. After much deliberation, I selected a beautiful leather handbag, a timeless piece that I knew I would cherish for years to come. It felt good to support a local artisan and bring home a tangible reminder of my time in Florence.

As the sun began to set, I made my way to Gucci Osteria da Massimo Bottura for dinner. This restaurant is a collaboration between the iconic fashion house and the renowned chef Massimo Bottura, and it promised to be a culinary experience like no other. It won a Michelin Star in 2019. Each restaurant has its own twist on Italian cuisine, incorporating local ingredients and techniques. The setting was stylish and sophisticated, with a touch of whimsy that reflected the Gucci brand. The menu was a playful take on classic Italian dishes, and each course was a work of art. I enjoyed the creative combinations of flavors and the impeccable presentation. It was a truly memorable meal, a fitting end to a day of indulgence and exploration.

Traveling – it leaves you speechless, then turns you into a storyteller.

I learned that there was a free concert in Florence tonight at the Basilica di Santa Trinita by The College of St. Scholastica. I decided to attend, and it was a very nice way to end the day.

Reflecting on my day, I realized that Florence is a city that truly captivates the senses. The Duomo, Giotto's Campanile, and the Opera del Duomo Museum were inspiring. The taste of authentic Italian cuisine and the touch of fine leather were exquisite. As I walked back to Locanda Di Mosconi, I couldn't help but smile, grateful for the opportunity to experience the magic of Florence. I am looking forward to tomorrow's adventure, which will take me to the Tuscan countryside. I will be joining Tuscan Wine Tours With Angie for a wine tour, and will visit San Gimignano. I am excited to explore the vineyards and savor the flavors of Tuscany. I am sure it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences. As I prepared for tomorrow, I realized I had forgotten to pack sunscreen and an umbrella, so I would need to buy those tomorrow before embarking on my wine tour.
