Day 10: Heights and Hidden Gems: A Day Exploring Florence's Overlooked Treasures
Escape the crowds and discover Florence's best-kept secrets: stunning gardens, panoramic views, and authentic local flavors.
Florentine Vistas and Culinary Delights
Today was all about escaping the bustling tourist crowds and discovering Florence's hidden gems. I ventured away from the well-trodden paths to find serene gardens, breathtaking panoramic views, and authentic Florentine flavors. It was a day of exploration, reflection, and savoring the quieter side of this magnificent city.
My day began with a delightful breakfast at Loggia Roof Bar. It was a recommendation I had seen online for a rooftop bar that was a bit of a hidden gem. I took a short taxi ride to the Hotel Palazzo Guadagni, where the bar is located. The reviews I had read mentioned that the views weren't anything special, but I found them to be quite charming. Sipping on a cappuccino while overlooking the neighborhood rooftops and the distant Florentine hills was a peaceful way to start my day. The atmosphere was calm and historical, a perfect setting for a solo traveler like myself to reflect on the journey so far. The service was excellent, and the staff were very friendly and competent.

With a taste for exploration, I set off towards Giardino Bardini. The walk itself was a treat, leading me through less-traveled streets, allowing me to soak in the local atmosphere. The Giardino Bardini is known as a hidden gem of a garden, and I couldn't agree more. While the Boboli Gardens are famous and crowded, Giardino Bardini offered a tranquil escape. As I ascended the hill, the views of Florence unfolded before me, each step revealing a more breathtaking panorama. I paused to capture the beauty with my camera, trying to encapsulate the essence of Florence in a single frame.

The garden itself was a delight. Though I am visiting in March, and the wisteria arch won't be in bloom until April, the manicured lawns and blooming flowers provided a colorful contrast to the terracotta rooftops of the city. It was easy to see why Florentines seek a moment's repose here. I found a quiet bench and spent some time journaling, reflecting on my experiences in Florence and planning the next leg of my journey. It was a moment of serenity amidst the excitement of travel, a chance to connect with my thoughts and feelings.
The best view comes after the hardest climb.
Next on my list was Villa Bardini, located within the garden complex. I was intrigued by the prospect of seeing the Caravaggio and the 20th Century. Roberto Longhi, Anna Banti exhibition. However, upon arrival, I learned that the exhibition wouldn't open until March 27th. Although I was a bit disappointed, I decided to explore the villa anyway. The architecture was stunning, and I spent some time admiring the details of the building. From what I could gather, the exhibition promises to be a fascinating exploration of the lives and times of a couple who brought together artists and thinkers that shaped 20th-century Italian culture.

Undeterred, I made my way to Forte di Belvedere. The walk to the fort was invigorating, offering glimpses of the city from different vantage points. Built in the late 16th century, the fort was initially intended to defend the city and provide a safe passage for the Medici family between Palazzo Pitti and Palazzo Vecchio. The fort has never suffered a siege, and not a single shot was ever fired from its ramparts. Today, it serves as a venue for exhibitions and cultural events.

Unfortunately, Forte di Belvedere is not open to the public during the winter months; it typically opens in the summer. However, I was still able to admire the structure from the outside and imagine what it must have been like to stand guard over Florence centuries ago. The views from the fort's location were impressive, offering a 360-degree panorama of the city. I made a mental note to return during the summer months to experience the fort in its full glory.
As the afternoon approached, I decided to indulge in some retail therapy at Rinascente Firenze. Located in Piazza della Repubblica, this department store is known as the Store of Craft. The store emphasizes for the city, with the city, in the city, opening its doors as a stage for fashion, novelties, and events. I explored the various floors, admiring the craftsmanship and the quality of the products. The ground floor, with its artisan workshops dedicated to leatherwork, goldsmithing, textiles, and sunglasses, was particularly impressive. I also visited the panoramic terrace on the top floor, which offered stunning views of the Duomo and Giotto's bell tower.

For lunch, I ventured to Osteria Antica Casa Torre. This restaurant came highly recommended for its traditional Florentine cuisine and its cozy atmosphere. I was not disappointed. I started with a selection of Tuscan cured meats and cheeses, followed by the restaurant's acclaimed pappardelle. The pasta was cooked al dente, and the ragu was rich and flavorful. The service was friendly and attentive, and the overall experience was delightful. It was a perfect spot to savor the authentic flavors of Florence.

In the evening, I had dinner at Burro & Acciughe, a seafood restaurant in the Oltrarno neighborhood. This restaurant was recommended for its fresh seafood and its modern, minimal interior. I started with the restaurant's namesake dish, anchovies in butter, served with crusty bread. The anchovies were rich and briny, and the butter added a touch of decadence. For my main course, I had spaghetti alle vongole, which was light, perfectly seasoned, and full of fresh clams. The meal was a delightful change of pace from the meat-heavy Florentine cuisine I had been enjoying.

As I walked back to Locanda Di Mosconi, I reflected on the day's adventures. I had escaped the crowds, discovered hidden gems, and savored authentic Florentine flavors. Tomorrow, I plan to visit Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza della Signoria, two of Florence's most famous squares. I am also looking forward to seeing the Fountain of Neptune, a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture. In the evening, I plan to relax at The Joshua Tree Pub, a local bar known for its friendly atmosphere and its selection of craft beers. I am excited to continue my exploration of Florence, to discover new treasures, and to create lasting memories. I might even treat myself to a hearty breakfast at Buca dell'Orafo, followed by lunch at Il Gatto e la Volpe | Florence, and cap off the day with dinner at Osteria La Dolce Vita Firenze.
As I prepare for bed, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and excitement. Florence has captivated my heart and soul, and I am eager to see what tomorrow brings. I feel fortunate to be on this solo journey, to have the freedom to explore, to reflect, and to connect with myself and the world around me.
