From Crater Views to Black Sand Shores

Today was a day of dramatic contrasts, a true testament to the diverse beauty packed into the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Leaving behind the charming village of Arnarstapi, where we enjoyed a hearty breakfast at Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa, I knew we were in for a treat, but I couldn't have imagined the sheer variety of landscapes we would encounter. It's days like these that remind me why I love traveling with my friends – sharing these incredible experiences makes them all the more special.

Our first stop was the Saxhóll Crater. As we drove closer, the landscape transformed, becoming more rugged and volcanic. The crater itself is an imposing sight, a stark reminder of Iceland's fiery past. I was excited to stretch my legs and embrace the somewhat challenging climb.

Reaching the top of Saxhóll Crater was absolutely exhilarating. The wind whipped around us, but the panoramic views were more than worth it. I could see for miles in every direction – the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, the rugged lava fields stretching towards the horizon, and the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier in the distance. It felt like standing on top of the world, a tiny speck in this immense and awe-inspiring landscape. I took a moment to close my eyes, breathe in the crisp, clean air, and simply soak it all in. It’s moments like these that remind me why I started this travel blog in the first place – to share the sheer wonder of our planet with others.

The beauty of Iceland lies not just in its grand vistas, but in the intimate details of its volcanic landscapes and rugged coastlines.

After descending from Saxhóll, we were ready for our next adventure: Djúpalónssandur Beach. The drive there was scenic, winding through more of those surreal lava fields that make this peninsula so unique. As we approached the beach, the landscape shifted again, becoming more dramatic and coastal. The black sand and towering cliffs created an almost otherworldly atmosphere.

The hike down to Djúpalónssandur is an experience in itself. The path winds through a rocky landscape, offering glimpses of the beach below. As we descended, the sound of the waves crashing against the shore grew louder, building anticipation for what awaited us. Arriving on the beach, I was immediately struck by its raw, untamed beauty. The black sand stretched out before us, meeting the crashing waves of the Atlantic. The smooth, black pebbles, known as the “pearls of Djúpalón,” were mesmerizing. I could have spent hours simply sifting through them, admiring their unique shapes and textures.

Of course, no visit to Djúpalónssandur is complete without a nod to its history. The lifting stones, remnants of a bygone era when fishermen tested their strength, stood as silent witnesses to the past. I gave them a respectful glance, imagining the lives of those who once relied on their strength and skill to survive in this harsh environment. It's amazing to think that this beach was once a thriving fishing village, a testament to the resilience and resourcefulness of the Icelandic people. My thoughts drifted to Maximilian and Astrid back in Berlin, and I wished they could experience this with me. Astrid would have loved playing on the black sand, and Maximilian would have appreciated the stark beauty of the landscape.

While at Djúpalónssandur, we were cautious not to get too close to the water's edge. My friend had read about sneaker waves, and we were careful to keep a safe distance. After all, safety first, no picture is worth risking one's life.

Lunch at Mæstro - Street food was a welcome break. This little gem in Grundarfjörður served up some delicious and satisfying meals. I opted for the fish tacos, which were incredibly fresh and flavorful. It was the perfect fuel for the rest of our day's adventures. The town itself is so picturesque, nestled beneath the watchful eye of Kirkjufell mountain. It's easy to see why it's such a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers.

Our final stop of the day was exploring the Lava Rocks Formations. It felt like stepping onto another planet. Jagged rocks and unusual shapes rose from the ground, creating a surreal and captivating environment. We spent a good amount of time wandering through the formations, marveling at the intricate patterns and textures carved by centuries of volcanic activity. The way the light played across the rocks was mesmerizing, creating a constantly shifting landscape of shadows and highlights.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Skipper Restaurant for dinner. The cozy atmosphere and delicious food were the perfect way to end our day of exploration. I enjoyed a hearty meal of fresh seafood, savoring the flavors of the Icelandic coast. It was a fitting end to a day spent immersed in the natural beauty of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

I also popped into Álfar og Tröll ehf to pick up a few gifts. I wanted to find something special for Astrid and Maximilian, a little piece of Iceland to bring back home. The shop was a treasure trove of Icelandic crafts and souvenirs, and I spent a happy hour browsing the unique and beautiful items on display. I finally settled on a hand-knitted woolen hat for Astrid and a beautiful piece of lava rock art for Maximilian. I hope they will remind them of my adventure here on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this incredible corner of the world. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has a way of capturing your heart and soul, leaving you with memories that will last a lifetime. And I am looking forward to tomorrow. I am eager to discover the Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring, Bæjarfoss, and Sönghellir Cave. And perhaps enjoy a drink at Saltkjallarinn.

Tomorrow we'll be exploring more of the peninsula's hidden gems, including the Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring and the Sönghellir Cave. I can't wait to see what wonders await us! I'm especially intrigued by the mineral spring – a chance to taste the unique flavors of Iceland's underground waters sounds like a truly unique experience.

“To travel is to take a journey into yourself.” I feel that I have accomplished that today.

Until tomorrow,
