Echoes of Fire and Ice

Today felt like stepping onto another planet, a world sculpted by the raw power of volcanoes and the serene touch of glacial waters. The Myvatn region has completely captivated me with its otherworldly landscapes and hidden gems. It's a place where the earth breathes, and every corner holds a new surprise.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kvika Kaffi. Maximilian opted for the traditional Geyser bread with smoked Arctic char, while Astrid devoured a sweet muffin. I enjoyed a cup of strong Icelandic coffee, which was much needed to fuel our adventures. It’s amazing how something as simple as freshly baked bread can taste extraordinary in such a unique setting. It reminded me of cozy mornings back in Fyresdal, although the view here was considerably more dramatic.

With our bellies full, we set off to explore the Skútustaðagígar Pseudo Craters. These aren't true volcanic craters but were formed around 2,300 years ago when hot lava flowed over wetlands, causing steam explosions. The result is a landscape dotted with numerous bowl-shaped formations, covered in vibrant green grass. It felt surreal to walk among them, imagining the fiery events that shaped this tranquil scene. Astrid was particularly fascinated, running up and down the slopes, pretending to be an explorer on a new planet. Maximilian, ever the attentive father, kept a close eye on her while I snapped photos, trying to capture the unique beauty of the area.

Sometimes, the most extraordinary beauty arises from the most unexpected and violent beginnings.

We took the longer hiking route, which was about 3 kilometers, allowing us to fully appreciate the panoramic views of Lake Myvatn and the surrounding wetlands. The area is a haven for birdwatchers, and we spotted several species of ducks and other waterfowl. I made sure to use the binoculars I packed! It was a bit of a challenge to keep Astrid quiet, but her curiosity about the birds eventually won out over her boundless energy. It's moments like these that make traveling with family so rewarding, sharing the wonder of nature with the next generation.

After our hike, we stopped for lunch at Bistro Sel & Pizza. This cozy restaurant is known for its delicious pizzas and bistro dishes, made with fresh, local ingredients. Maximilian and I shared a local fish pizza, which was surprisingly delightful, while Astrid opted for a simple margherita. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, and the staff was incredibly friendly. It felt like a perfect place to relax and refuel after our morning adventure. The restaurant is part of the Sel Hotel Myvatn, and is known for its Geysir Bread IPA, using local Geysir bread to give it a unique flavor.

Our next stop was Grjótagjá, a small lava cave with a hot spring inside. This cave is famous for being a filming location in Game of Thrones, where Jon Snow and Ygritte shared a romantic moment. The cave itself is a geological wonder, formed by volcanic activity thousands of years ago. The crystal-clear blue water is heated by geothermal activity, creating a mystical atmosphere.

Unfortunately, the water is no longer safe for bathing due to unpredictable temperatures, but it was still incredible to see. The cave is located on private land, and the owners have had to close it to the public at times due to vandalism and damage. We were lucky to be able to visit, and we made sure to be respectful of the environment. Astrid was fascinated by the cave, but also a bit scared of the darkness. I held her hand tightly as we explored, telling her stories of trolls and hidden treasures. It's amazing how a simple cave can spark so much imagination.

Before dinner, we stopped at Krambúðin Reykjahlíð, a local grocery store. We needed to pick up a few essentials, and I also wanted to find some local snacks to bring back to Berlin. The store had a great selection of Icelandic products, from dairy to artisanal snacks. I chatted with the friendly staff, who gave me some insider tips on the best attractions in the area. It felt like a true community hub, a place where locals and tourists alike could connect and share stories.

For dinner, we had a reservation at Vogafjós Farm Resort, a restaurant located next to a cowshed. This unique dining experience is all about serving local products of the finest quality. We started with the Vogafjós special, a platter of homemade mozzarella, raw smoked lamb, smoked Arctic char, and Geysir bread. It was a delicious introduction to Icelandic cuisine. For the main course, Maximilian ordered the lamb fillet, while I opted for the beef burger, both made with meat from the farm. Astrid, of course, chose the pancakes with whipped cream. While enjoying our meal, we could watch the cows being milked through a glass window. It was a truly unique and memorable experience.

The Vogafjós Farm Resort is dedicated to local flavors, and even makes their own Geysir rye bread, which is baked in their underground bakery. Vogafjós also offers the chance to sample fresh milk and interact with the calves.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the incredible experiences we had. The Myvatn region is a place of stark contrasts, where fire and ice meet to create a landscape unlike any other. It's a place that challenges the senses and inspires the soul. I'm so grateful to be sharing this adventure with my family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to visit Sigurgeir's Bird Museum and Hofdi. I'm excited to learn more about the local birdlife and explore the unique lava formations of Hofdi. I also hear there's a great microbar called R5 Micro Bar, which Maximilian is keen to check out. Until then, I'll rest my weary feet and dream of volcanoes and hidden caves. Perhaps I'll knit a few rows on my traditional Norwegian sweater, a cozy reminder of home amidst this extraordinary landscape. Good night from Myvatn!
