Icelandic Echoes: Waterfalls and Stone Bridges

Today was a day of embracing Iceland's raw beauty, a symphony of water and stone that resonated deeply within us. Snæfellsjökull National Park continued to unveil its treasures, and Lena and I were eager to explore every corner. It's days like these that remind me why we traded the familiar sounds of Potsdam for the untamed melodies of Iceland.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Hlaðan Veitingahús. The cozy atmosphere and the promise of traditional Icelandic fare were the perfect start to a day of exploration. I opted for the breakfast buffet, while Lena chose a lighter option of Skyr with fresh berries. Fuelled and ready, we set off to chase our first waterfall of the day: Bæjarfoss.

The drive to Ólafsvík was scenic, with the landscape gradually transforming from rugged coastline to rolling green hills. As we approached the town, the majestic Bæjarfoss revealed itself, cascading down the hillside. The waterfall is easily accessible from the town, a short walk from the Ólafsvíkurkirkja church. The path to the base of the waterfall was an easy 10-minute stroll, and the view of the 35-meter-high waterfall was worth every step. The mist from the falls kissed our faces as we stood in awe of nature's power. I couldn't help but think of the Foley sounds I could create with such a powerful cascade – the whooshing, the crashing, the subtle echoes against the rocks.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of nature's offerings.

After Bæjarfoss, we were ready for our next adventure: the Stone Bridge at Arnarstapi.

The drive from Ólafsvík to Arnarstapi was breathtaking, offering panoramic views of the coastline. Arnarstapi itself is a charming village, with colorful houses dotting the landscape. We parked near the harbor and took a short walk along the coastal trail westward. The Stone Bridge, a natural arch formation spanning part of the cliff, soon came into view.

Lena was immediately captivated by the dramatic cliffs and the crashing waves below. I, on the other hand, was fascinated by the geological formations – the basalt columns and the intricate patterns carved by the relentless sea. We spent a good hour exploring the area, taking photos and simply soaking in the atmosphere. The legend of the troll turned to stone added a whimsical touch to the already magical place.

For lunch, we decided to try Samkomuhúsið Arnarstapa.

This restaurant is in the old community center and offers homemade Icelandic food. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the food was delicious. Lena enjoyed a traditional lamb soup, while I opted for the fish and chips.

With our bellies full and our spirits high, we decided to explore the Harbour Cafe in Arnarstapi.

Sipping on strong Icelandic coffee, we watched the fishing boats bobbing gently in the harbor. The cafe exuded a sense of warmth and community, a place where locals and travelers alike could come together and share stories. I imagined the tales these weathered fishermen could tell, their voices deep and resonant, perfect for a documentary I might one day create.

As evening approached, we made our way to Sker Restaurant in Ólafsvík for dinner.

This charming spot is known for its fresh Icelandic flavors and welcoming vibes. We started with the deep-fried Camembert cheese, which was crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside. For our main courses, Lena chose the pan-seared cod fillet, while I went for the beef tenderloin. Both dishes were cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor.

After dinner, we decided to visit Harbour Cafe again for a nightcap. The atmosphere was lively, with locals and tourists mingling and sharing stories. I enjoyed a local beer while Lena sipped on a glass of wine. The sounds of laughter and conversation filled the air, creating a warm and convivial atmosphere. We chatted with some locals, learning about their lives and traditions. It was a reminder of the simple joys of life – good company, good food, and good conversation.

As we drove back to our campsite under the starlit Icelandic sky, Lena and I reflected on the day's adventures. We had chased waterfalls, explored dramatic coastlines, and savored the flavors of Iceland. But more than that, we had connected with the people and the land, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we plan to explore the remains of the Epine GY7 Fishing Trawler and Keflavíkurvör [If I understand correctly, this is a location of historical significance], continuing our journey through the captivating Snæfellsjökull National Park. I'm particularly excited to see the fishing trawler, imagining the sounds of the sea and the creaking of the ship, elements I can incorporate into my sound designs. I also hope to visit Álfar og Tröll ehf, a local shop, to find some unique souvenirs for our families back in Potsdam. As the trip nears its end, each day feels more precious, each experience more profound. I am looking forward to sharing more stories from our Icelandic adventure.
