A Day Above the Clouds
Today was all about reaching new heights, both literally and figuratively, in Serra da Lousã. With the sun shining and a sense of adventure in my heart, I set out to explore some of the region's most stunning viewpoints and historical landmarks. It was a day filled with breathtaking vistas, delicious food, and the kind of peaceful reflection that only solo travel can provide.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at VerdiNi Café e Bar in Lousã. I opted for a strong coffee and a traditional Portuguese pastry, fueling up for the day’s adventures. The café was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day in this charming town.

With a full stomach and a map in hand, I drove towards my first destination: the Poços da Neve do Coentral. The drive itself was an experience, winding through narrow roads with stunning views of the Serra da Lousã. The landscape was a tapestry of green forests and quaint villages, a true feast for the eyes.
Arriving at Poços da Neve do Coentral, I was immediately struck by the historical significance of the site. These snow wells, dating back to the 18th century, were once used to store snow and ice, which was then transported to Lisbon for the royal court. It’s incredible to think about the ingenuity and effort that went into this process, especially considering the remote location of the wells. I spent some time exploring the area, taking in the panoramic views and imagining what life must have been like for the people who worked here centuries ago. The silence was broken only by the occasional bird song and the gentle breeze rustling through the trees – a perfect soundscape for reflection.

“Sometimes, the most rewarding journeys are those that take us off the beaten path and lead us to places where history and nature intertwine.”
Next on my itinerary was the Marco Geodésico do Candal. The drive to the geodetic marker was even more challenging than the first, with steep inclines and hairpin turns that tested my driving skills. But the reward was well worth the effort. Perched atop one of the highest points in the Serra da Lousã, the Marco Geodésico do Candal offered unparalleled views of the surrounding landscape. I could see for miles in every direction, with the rolling hills and valleys stretching out like a green carpet. It was a truly awe-inspiring sight, and I felt a sense of accomplishment for having made it to such a remote and beautiful spot.

I spent a good hour at the geodetic marker, simply soaking in the scenery and enjoying the solitude. As a sound engineer, I couldn't resist pulling out my recording equipment to capture the ambient sounds of the mountains. The wind, the birds, and the distant sounds of nature all combined to create a unique and captivating soundscape that I knew I would cherish for years to come. I even managed to capture some interesting sounds of the wind interacting with the metal structure of the geodetic marker itself, which I think Lena would appreciate.
After my mountaintop experience, it was time for lunch. I drove back down to Lousã and found a delightful spot called Restaurante AVÓ. The name, which translates to Grandmother's Restaurant, was certainly fitting. The restaurant had a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, and the menu was full of traditional Portuguese dishes. I decided to try the *cabrito assado*, roast goat, a local specialty, and it was absolutely delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful, and the potatoes were perfectly roasted. It was exactly the kind of hearty, home-cooked meal I needed after a day of exploring the mountains.

As I savored my lunch, I couldn't help but reflect on the simple pleasures of travel. Sometimes, it's not about ticking off a list of famous landmarks or rushing from one tourist attraction to another. It's about taking the time to appreciate the beauty of nature, to immerse oneself in the local culture, and to savor the flavors of the region. These are the moments that truly make a trip memorable and meaningful.
In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a sweet treat at Gelataria Própoli. This charming ice cream shop is known for its artisanal gelato, made with local ingredients. I tried a scoop of the *mel serra da lousã* (Lousã mountain honey) flavor, and it was heavenly. The honey was rich and fragrant, and the gelato was perfectly creamy. It was the perfect way to cool down after a warm day of hiking and driving. Apparently, the Greeks called Própolis the gates to a city, so the owners chose this name because they are located at one of the main entrances to the municipality.

For dinner, I chose Salty Louzan, enticed by its reputation for Spanish-influenced cuisine. The tapas were excellent, and I particularly enjoyed the *gambas al ajillo* (garlic shrimp). The atmosphere was relaxed and convivial, making it a great place to unwind after a busy day. Although some customers had to ask for salt to season their grilled meat, I found the food to be flavorful and well-prepared.

As the sun began to set, I found a quiet spot overlooking the Serra da Lousã and watched as the sky transformed into a canvas of orange, pink, and purple hues. It was a magical moment, and I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty of this region.
Tomorrow, I plan to explore the Ecomuseu da Serra da Lousã and visit the Miradouro do Penedo da Saudade. I'm also looking forward to trying some local cuisine at Churrasqueira Borges for breakfast, Villa Lausana for lunch and Casa Dos Frangos - Restaurante São Paulo for dinner. And perhaps end the day at Doispontozero Bar.
Today in Serra da Lousã was a reminder of why I love to travel solo. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the experience, to connect with nature and local culture, and to discover hidden gems that I might otherwise miss. And, of course, it gives me the freedom to pursue my passion for sound recording, capturing the unique soundscapes of each destination I visit. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.
I also made a mental note to buy Lena a little something from Lousã, maybe some local honey or a handcrafted souvenir. It's always nice to bring a piece of my travels back home to share with her.
Before drifting off to sleep, I journaled about the day's adventures, making sure to capture all the sensory details – the sights, sounds, smells, and tastes – that made it so special. These are the memories that I will cherish long after I've left Serra da Lousã, and I'm grateful to have had the opportunity to experience them firsthand.
I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures, but for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of exploration. Goodnight from Serra da Lousã!
