Farewell, Livingstonia!

As my solo journey through Livingstonia draws to a close, I find myself filled with a mix of emotions. There's a sense of accomplishment in having explored this historically rich and scenically stunning part of Malawi, but also a tinge of sadness at the thought of leaving. Today was all about soaking in the last bits of Livingstonia’s charm, revisiting its past, and capturing the panoramic beauty that defines this unique place.

My day started, as most days here have, with a simple yet satisfying breakfast at a local restaurant. There’s something incredibly comforting about the familiar flavors of Malawian cuisine, a taste of home that always brings a smile to my face. After breakfast, I headed to the Stone House Museum, a place I had been eagerly anticipating visiting all week.

The Stone House Museum is more than just a building; it's a portal into the past. Built in 1903, it was once the home of Dr. Robert Laws, a Scottish missionary who dedicated fifty years of his life to leading the Livingstonia mission. Stepping inside felt like walking into a different era. The house, which was the first in Central Africa to have electricity and running water, is filled with Dr. Laws' letters, books, and personal belongings. It offered a fascinating glimpse into the life of a man who played a significant role in shaping the region. I spent a good couple of hours wandering through the rooms, reading about the ancient laws of Nyasaland and examining the photographs depicting the lives of the early inhabitants of Livingstonia. It was an enriching experience that deepened my understanding of the area's history and cultural heritage. I even picked up a small booklet about the history of the Stone House from the Yakhobe Shop – a perfect memento.

The end of a journey is never the end, but a beginning woven into the tapestry of our experiences.

Leaving the museum, I felt a sense of connection to Livingstonia’s past, a feeling of belonging that resonated deeply within me. It reminded me of the importance of understanding our history, of appreciating the sacrifices and contributions of those who came before us. With the morning's dose of history, I decided to head over to Mlowe View for lunch at ZATHU Cape Community Kitchen & Bar. The minibus ride to Mlowe was an experience in itself, bumping along the dirt roads, passing through small villages, and catching glimpses of daily life in rural Malawi. When I arrived, the view was simply breathtaking. From the escarpment, I could see the vast expanse of Lake Malawi stretching out before me, the villages of Mlowe and Charo nestled along its shores. The lush greenery and the clear blue waters created a stunning panorama that was worth every bit of the journey.

ZATHU Cape Community Kitchen & Bar was a delightful surprise. The food was delicious, a perfect blend of local flavors and modern culinary techniques. I enjoyed a plate of grilled chambo (a local fish) with nsima (a staple made from maize flour), savoring each bite while taking in the spectacular view. It was the perfect setting for reflection, a moment to appreciate the beauty of Malawi and the warmth of its people.

As the afternoon progressed, I decided to linger a little longer at Mlowe View, simply soaking in the scenery. I found a quiet spot to sit and write in my travel journal, jotting down my thoughts and impressions of the trip. It was a time for introspection, a chance to process everything I had experienced over the past week. I thought about my family back in Bristol, about David and Thandi, and how much I missed them. I realized that this solo journey, while deeply personal, had also strengthened my connection to them. It had reminded me of who I am, of where I come from, and of what truly matters in life.

For my final dinner in Livingstonia, I chose DOVES EATERY, a cozy little spot known for its traditional Malawian dishes. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, filled with the sounds of laughter and conversation. I ordered a plate of kondowole (cassava flour bread) with beans, a simple yet satisfying meal that brought back memories of my childhood in Chilumba. As I ate, I chatted with some of the locals, sharing stories and experiences. It was a reminder of the power of human connection, of how a simple meal can bridge cultural divides and create lasting friendships.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over Livingstonia, I walked back to my guesthouse, my heart filled with gratitude. This trip has been more than just a vacation; it has been a journey of self-discovery, a reconnection with my roots, and a celebration of the beauty and resilience of Malawi. I've captured countless photographs, filled pages of my travel journal, and created memories that will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow, I begin my journey back to Lilongwe, and then onwards to Bristol. The prospect of returning to my family fills me with joy, but I know that a part of me will always remain in Livingstonia. This place has touched my heart in a profound way, and I am forever grateful for the opportunity to have experienced its magic. As I prepare to leave, I carry with me not just souvenirs and photographs, but also a renewed sense of purpose, a deeper understanding of myself, and a stronger connection to my heritage. I am Grace Banda, a proud Malawian, and I am ready to share my story with the world.

Thank you, Livingstonia, for the memories, the lessons, and the inspiration. Until we meet again.

I think I will miss the local restaurants the most – especially the simplicity and the flavours that come with it. I can't wait to try and recreate some of the dishes back home, and maybe even get Thandi involved in the cooking.

And with that, my Livingstonia adventure comes to a close. It’s been a deeply personal journey, one that has reconnected me with my roots and filled my heart with a renewed sense of purpose. I'm excited to return home to David and Thandi, and to share my stories and experiences with them. Until next time, Malawi!
