Kyoto's Parting Embrace

As my final day in Kyoto draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I've undertaken. This solo trip has been a whirlwind of cultural immersion, historical exploration, and personal discovery. From the serene temples to the bustling markets, Kyoto has captivated me in ways I never imagined. Today was all about soaking in those last precious moments, a final deep dive into the heart of this enchanting city before heading back to Bristol.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Kyoto cuisine Hanasaki Nishikiten. It was a great way to experience the local flavors one last time. The restaurant’s location near the Nishiki Market made it easy to find, and the Kyoto-style breakfast set the perfect tone for a day of exploration. I savored every bite, appreciating the delicate balance of flavors and the artistry in the presentation. Sipping on green tea, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me, grateful for the experiences I've had and excited for what the future holds.

First on the agenda was the Kyoto Railway Museum. As someone fascinated by trains and their history, I was eager to explore this attraction. The museum is vast, showcasing an impressive collection of locomotives, from vintage steam engines to sleek, modern bullet trains. It was fascinating to see the evolution of railway technology in Japan and to learn about the impact of trains on the country's development. I particularly enjoyed the interactive exhibits, which allowed me to experience what it's like to be a train conductor. The training simulator was a highlight, putting my skills to the test as I navigated a virtual train through challenging scenarios. I was also impressed by the miniature models, which meticulously recreated famous railway scenes. The attention to detail was remarkable, and I could have spent hours admiring the intricate landscapes and tiny trains.

The journey may be ending, but the memories will last a lifetime.

After immersing myself in the world of trains, I ventured to the iconic Togetsukyo Bridge in Arashiyama. The bridge spans the Katsura River, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forests. As I walked across the bridge, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the natural beauty that surrounded me. The lush greenery, the flowing river, and the majestic mountains created a picturesque scene that seemed straight out of a postcard. I learned that the bridge's name, which translates to Moon-Crossing Bridge, was inspired by Emperor Kameyama, who witnessed the moon rising above the river and felt as if it were crossing the bridge. The history of the bridge is also fascinating, with the original structure dating back to the Heian period. The current bridge, built in the 1930s, incorporates wooden railings to blend seamlessly with the natural landscape.

Next, I headed to the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, eager to delve into the world of sake brewing. Fushimi is renowned for its high-quality sake, thanks to its pristine water and favorable climate. The museum, housed in a beautifully preserved brewery, offered a comprehensive look at the history and techniques of sake production. I learned about the different types of rice used, the fermentation process, and the importance of water quality. The museum also showcased traditional tools and equipment used in sake brewing, providing a glimpse into the craftsmanship and dedication of sake makers. Of course, no visit to a sake museum would be complete without a tasting. I sampled a variety of Gekkeikan's finest sakes, each with its unique flavor profile and aroma. It was a delightful experience, and I gained a newfound appreciation for the art of sake brewing.

Before calling it a day, I made a stop at Omiyage Kaido to pick up some last-minute souvenirs for David, Thandi, and my colleagues back at the charity. Omiyage Kaido offers a wide array of local products, from traditional sweets and crafts to regional delicacies. I carefully selected a few items that I knew would be appreciated, including some matcha-flavored treats for Thandi and a beautiful piece of pottery for David. I also found some unique snacks to share with my colleagues, hoping to give them a taste of Kyoto's culinary delights. Shopping for souvenirs was a fun way to reflect on my journey and to bring a piece of Kyoto back home with me.

For lunch, I decided to try AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO, a vegan restaurant that had been recommended to me. As someone who enjoys exploring different cuisines and culinary approaches, I was curious to see what a vegan take on Kyoto cuisine would be like. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a relaxed atmosphere that made me feel right at home. I ordered the vegan pancakes, which were fluffy, light, and absolutely delicious. It was a satisfying and guilt-free meal, and I left feeling energized and ready to continue my exploration.

Dinner was at Khaos Spice Diner, a place that promised a unique culinary experience. The diner specializes in curry, but with a twist. The menu featured a variety of creative and flavorful curry dishes, blending traditional Indian spices with Japanese ingredients. I opted for the chef's special, a spicy chicken curry that was both comforting and exciting. The flavors were bold and complex, and the dish had just the right amount of heat. The atmosphere of the diner was also noteworthy, with its eclectic decor and lively music. It was a fun and memorable dining experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique culinary adventure.

As I sit here now, writing this blog post from the comfort of my hotel room at The Screen, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sadness that my time in Kyoto is coming to an end. This trip has been an incredible journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and photographic exploration. I’ve learned so much about Japan, about myself, and about the world around me. I will especially cherish the moments when I allowed myself to get lost in the city's back streets, camera in hand, capturing the essence of everyday life. It reminded me of my early days in Chilumba, Malawi, where simple moments held profound beauty.

Tomorrow, I’ll be heading to Osaka to catch my flight back to Bristol. While I’m excited to see David and Thandi, a part of me will always remain in Kyoto. This city has touched my heart in a special way, and I know I’ll be back someday to explore more of its hidden gems.

Before I sign off, I wanted to share a thought that has been on my mind throughout this trip. As a community outreach coordinator, I’m passionate about connecting people and fostering understanding. Travel, I believe, is one of the most powerful tools for achieving this. By immersing ourselves in different cultures, we can break down barriers, challenge our assumptions, and build bridges of empathy and respect. I hope that my blog has inspired you to embark on your own journey of discovery and to embrace the transformative power of travel.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure. Until next time, safe travels!

P.S. I almost forgot to mention that I managed to find a universal power adapter at Omiyage Kaido! Crisis averted. Now I can finally charge my camera and upload all my photos from today.
