Kyoto's Golden Start
My first day in Kyoto was nothing short of magical. From the moment I stepped off the train, I felt an energy, a sense of history and peace that I've rarely encountered. Today was all about immersing myself in the iconic sights that Kyoto is famous for, and I couldn't wait to get started. It was a day filled with golden reflections, tranquil contemplation, and a deep appreciation for the artistry that permeates every corner of this incredible city.
My day began with a delightful vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. As someone who enjoys trying new and exciting culinary experiences, I was eager to see what a vegan restaurant in Japan had to offer. I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised! The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly. I opted for their signature pancakes, which were light, fluffy, and utterly divine. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring.

First on the itinerary was Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion. As I approached the temple, the sight of the shimmering gold reflecting off the water was simply breathtaking. The meticulous detail and the sheer opulence of the structure were astounding. It felt like stepping into a postcard, a perfect embodiment of Kyoto's beauty. The history of Kinkaku-ji is fascinating; originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397, it was later converted into a Zen temple. The structure has been rebuilt a couple of times, most recently in 1955 after a fire in 1950. Each of the three stories represents a different architectural style, blending Heian aristocratic design with Zen temple aesthetics. Walking around the pond, I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of this serene and stunning place. I even tossed a coin at one of the statues for good luck, hoping for a smooth and fulfilling journey ahead.

Sometimes, the most beautiful journeys are those that allow us to slow down, to breathe, and to truly appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.
Next, I headed to Ryoan-ji, famous for its enigmatic Zen garden. This was an experience of a different kind – a journey inward. The garden consists of fifteen rocks arranged in a sea of white gravel, and it's designed in such a way that you can never see all fifteen rocks at once from any vantage point. The garden dates back to 1450, when it was converted into a Zen temple. As I sat on the veranda, contemplating the arrangement, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The meaning of the garden is open to interpretation, with some believing it represents islands in a stream or a tiger carrying cubs across a pond. For me, it was a reminder of the beauty of simplicity and the importance of finding peace within oneself. I spent a good hour there, simply observing and letting my mind wander. It was a welcome contrast to the grandeur of Kinkaku-ji and a profound experience in its own right.

After the Zen garden, I visited Ninna-ji Temple, a short walk from Ryoan-ji. Founded in 888 by Emperor Uda, this temple has strong ties to the imperial family, and that history is palpable as you wander through its grounds. Ninna-ji is the head temple of the Omuro school of the Shingon Sect of Buddhism. The vast complex includes beautiful gardens, a five-story pagoda, and the Goten, which reflects the residential style of emperors of old. The temple was destroyed by fire in 1467 during the Onin War but was rebuilt 150 years later. I particularly enjoyed the serene atmosphere and the sense of history that permeated every corner of the temple. It was fascinating to learn that retired emperors often served as head priests here, further solidifying its imperial connections. While the Omuro cherry trees, known for their late blooming, weren't in season, I could imagine how stunning the temple grounds must look in spring.

For lunch, I treated myself to tonkatsu at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta. Located in Kyoto Station, it was a convenient stop after a morning of temple hopping. Though tonkatsu might not be traditional Kyoto cuisine, I was looking for a hearty and satisfying meal, and Katsukura certainly delivered. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, and I had to wait a bit for a table, but it was well worth it. I ordered the classic tonkatsu set, which came with miso soup, rice, and pickles. The pork cutlet was perfectly crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. I also enjoyed grinding my own sesame seeds to mix with the tonkatsu sauce – a nice touch that added to the experience. It was a delicious and comforting meal that rejuvenated me for the rest of the day's adventures.

In the late afternoon, I decided to explore the Kyoto Crafts Store. I wanted to find a unique souvenir to remind me of my trip. The store offered a wide array of traditional crafts, from ceramics to textiles to lacquerware. I was particularly drawn to the intricate woodwork and the delicate beauty of the Kyoto dolls. I ended up purchasing a small, hand-painted fan with a cherry blossom design. It was a perfect memento of my time in Kyoto, something I could cherish and display in my home.

As evening approached, I made my way to Kikunoi Roan for a Kaiseki dinner. This was an experience I had been eagerly anticipating, a chance to savor the artistry of Japanese cuisine at a renowned restaurant. The ambiance was elegant and refined, and the service was impeccable. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle and complex, showcasing the freshest seasonal ingredients. I savored every bite, appreciating the skill and dedication that went into creating such a memorable meal. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful simmered dishes, each course was a revelation. It was a culinary journey that I won't soon forget.
