Blue Hues and Hidden Views

Today was all about diving deeper into the heart of Chefchaouen, venturing beyond the well-trodden paths and embracing the town's authentic spirit. It’s easy to get caught up in the picture-perfect scenery, but I wanted to truly connect with the culture and discover what makes this blue pearl so special.

My day began with a delightful breakfast at Tissemlal. The warm hospitality of Hassan, the owner, made the experience even more special. I savored traditional Moroccan pancakes with honey, accompanied by a strong, sweet mint tea. It was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploration. Tissemlal has been around for 20 years, and is known for its fresh ingredients and attentive staff.

First on my list was Bab El Hammar. As I approached, the striking blue-washed walls of the museum were a visual treat, reflecting the iconic color of Chefchaouen. Inside, I explored exhibits that showcased the region's craftsmanship, from textiles to pottery. The tranquil atmosphere allowed me to appreciate the stories behind each piece, offering a window into the rich tapestry of local life. It was more than just a museum; it was an immersive experience that deepened my understanding of Moroccan traditions.

Leaving Bab El Hammar, I decided to lose myself in the labyrinthine alleys of the medina, eventually finding my way to Derb El Assri. This enchanting blue alleyway is one of the most photographed spots in Chefchaouen, and for good reason. The vibrant blue hues create a captivating backdrop, and the narrow streets are filled with the hustle and bustle of daily life. I wandered past artisanal shops, where craftsmen displayed their handmade goods, and soaked in the inviting atmosphere.

Sometimes, the most memorable experiences are found not in grand monuments, but in the quiet corners and unexpected encounters that reveal the true essence of a place.

For lunch, I ventured to Mounir Food. The great location made it easy to reach, and the prices were delightfully low. I enjoyed a flavorful tagine, savoring the spices and aromas that define Moroccan cuisine. While the restaurant may not have the highest ratings, it offered a genuine taste of local flavors and a welcome respite from the tourist crowds.

Next, I made my way to Hero Eagle. The walk to the viewpoint was invigorating, with glimpses of traditional Moroccan life along the way. As I ascended, the panoramic views of Chefchaouen and the Rif Mountains unfolded before me. The soft hues of the sky complemented the stunning blue of the town, creating a magical atmosphere. I spent a good hour there, capturing photos and simply soaking in the serene beauty of the landscape. This spot is especially popular during sunset.

As the day drew to a close, I treated myself to dinner at RESTAURANT CASA ANDALUZ. This restaurant is known for its Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisines, and I was eager to try their offerings. I savored a delicious couscous dish, followed by a refreshing fruit salad. The quiet atmosphere of the restaurant was a welcome escape, although some reviewers have noted that it has been rated below average by Google.

To end the day, I decided to check out Restaurant Bar Chaouen. It was a great spot to unwind and reflect on my experiences. I enjoyed a refreshing drink and chatted with some fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of exploration and discovery.

November in Chefchaouen is proving to be quite pleasant. The daytime temperatures are comfortable, ranging from the high 50s to high 60s Fahrenheit. Evenings, however, do get chilly, so layering is essential. There's also a chance of rain, so it's wise to pack a waterproof jacket or umbrella.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I'm reminded of the importance of venturing off the beaten path and embracing the unexpected. It's in these moments that we truly connect with a place and its people, creating memories that will last a lifetime. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I plan to visit Sidi Bouchouka photo spot and Akchour. Perhaps I'll pick up a souvenir at Cat Pix as well. Good night from Chefchaouen!

It's interesting how many people have also found little pieces of home while traveling abroad. I read a story recently about someone finding newspapers from their local town in a restaurant in Edinburgh ! These little coincidences really do make you feel connected.

I'm also finding myself drawn to the local fashion here. I've noticed many women wearing a red and white striped garment and a traditional hat called “Taraza”, which is a beautiful testament to their cultural identity. I hope to find a similar piece to bring home with me.

On a practical note, I did realize I forgot a plug adapter for Moroccan outlets, which is proving to be a bit of a hassle. Luckily, the hotel has been accommodating, but I'll definitely need to pick one up tomorrow. And while I packed a light jacket, I wish I had brought a warmer one for the evenings. Note to self: always double-check the essentials!

The weather forecast for the rest of my trip looks promising, with comfortable temperatures and a mix of sunshine and clouds. I'm eager to continue exploring Chefchaouen and discovering all that this enchanting town has to offer. I'm also mindful that Independence Day is coming up in Morocco on November 18th , though I don't know if I'll still be here then.

Chefchaouen is truly a feast for the senses. The blue-washed walls, the fragrant spices, the sounds of the medina – it's an experience that will stay with me long after I leave. I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore this magical place on my own, immersing myself in its culture and connecting with its people.
