A Fond Farewell

As my final day in Chefchaouen draws to a close, I find myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve undertaken in this blue pearl of Morocco. It feels surreal that eight days have already passed since I arrived, wide-eyed and eager to explore. This solo trip has been a beautiful blend of cultural immersion, culinary exploration, and peaceful introspection. I’ve wandered through the enchanting blue streets, savored the flavors of Moroccan cuisine, and connected with the warm-hearted locals. Now, with a tinge of sadness, I prepare to bid adieu to this magical town, carrying with me memories that I will cherish forever.

My final morning began with a delightful breakfast at Traditional kitchen. The simple, yet flavorful, dishes were the perfect start to a day filled with exploration and reflection. Sipping on mint tea, I savored the last moments of tranquility before venturing out for my final adventures in Chefchaouen. It was a bittersweet moment, knowing that my time in this enchanting town was quickly coming to an end.

I decided to dedicate the morning to exploring the natural beauty surrounding Chefchaouen, so I headed towards Jebel Bouhachem Nature Reserve. The reserve, a vast project initiated to conserve biodiversity, is known for its Mediterranean climate and significant rainfall. Although I didn't have time for an extensive trek, I took a short hike, immersing myself in the serene landscape. The air was crisp and clean, filled with the scent of oak and pine. I was hoping to spot the Barbary macaque, but these shy creatures remained hidden. Still, the experience was rejuvenating, a perfect contrast to the bustling medina.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing new perspectives and connecting with different cultures.

After my brief sojourn into nature, I returned to Chefchaouen to visit Plaza Mohammed V. This central square is a vibrant hub of activity, a place where locals and tourists mingle. I sat on a bench, observing the ebb and flow of daily life. Children played, vendors sold their wares, and families strolled leisurely. The square was a microcosm of Chefchaouen itself, a blend of tradition and modernity, simplicity and vibrancy. I took some time to admire the architecture around the plaza, noting the intricate details and the harmonious blend of styles.

For lunch, I chose Chez Foad, a restaurant recommended for its authentic Moroccan cuisine. The cozy atmosphere and friendly staff made me feel right at home. I ordered a tagine, a classic Moroccan dish, and savored every bite. The flavors were rich and complex, a testament to the culinary traditions of this region. As I ate, I reflected on all the delicious meals I had enjoyed during my stay, from street food to fine dining, each one a unique culinary experience.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a drink at Sunset at sunset, a bar known for its stunning views. I arrived early to secure a good spot and ordered a refreshing orange juice. As the sun began to set, the sky transformed into a canvas of vibrant colors. Hues of orange, pink, and purple painted the landscape, creating a breathtaking spectacle. I sat in comfortable silence, soaking in the beauty of the moment, feeling grateful for this incredible journey.

For my final dinner in Chefchaouen, I chose The Magic Lamp House of Aladin. This restaurant is renowned for its enchanting atmosphere and delicious Moroccan dishes. The décor was magical, with traditional lamps and intricate details creating a fairy-tale ambiance. I ordered the lemon chicken tajine, a dish highly recommended by previous diners. The chicken was tender and flavorful, the sauce a perfect blend of sweet and savory. The service was impeccable, the staff attentive and friendly. It was the perfect ending to my culinary exploration of Chefchaouen.

Back at the hotel, I packed my bags, carefully placing the souvenirs I had collected along the way. Each item held a special memory, a reminder of the experiences I had had in Chefchaouen. As I prepared for my departure, I felt a mix of emotions—sadness at leaving this enchanting place, but also excitement for the journey ahead.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Tangier, then flying home to Bristol. I know that a part of me will always remain in Chefchaouen, wandering through the blue streets, savoring the mint tea, and basking in the warmth of the Moroccan sun. This solo sojourn has been an unforgettable experience, one that I will cherish for a lifetime.

Thank you, Chefchaouen, for the memories. Until we meet again.
