Exploring the Majestic Landscapes of Huascaran National Park
Day 6: Conquering Heights and Depths: A Day Amidst Giants
Join our journey through Huascaran National Park, where we hiked to breathtaking heights and savored authentic Peruvian flavors. A day of awe!
Reaching for the Sky
Today was a day of immense beauty and physical challenge, the kind that etches itself into your memory. Huascaran National Park truly lived up to its reputation as a land of towering peaks and stunning vistas. Aaliyah and I pushed ourselves, not just physically, but also mentally, as we navigated the altitude and the demanding terrain. But every ache and every breathlessness was worth it for the views that unfolded before us.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Jose Olaya. The weather was partly cloudy, but with little chance of rain. Fuelled up on traditional Peruvian fare, we set off to explore the park. The plan was simple: immerse ourselves in the heart of the Cordillera Blanca, visit Huascarán, and chase some waterfalls.

The drive into the park was an experience in itself. The landscape transformed dramatically as we ascended, from the green valleys to the rugged, rocky terrain closer to the mountains. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the sheer scale of everything around us. Aaliyah, ever the keen photographer, was snapping away, trying to capture the immensity of the views. I must remember to buy her some extra memory cards, as I forgot to pack extra ones.
We started our hike, aiming for a vantage point that would give us a good view of Huascarán. The air was thin, and I could feel the familiar burn in my lungs as we climbed. Aaliyah, being the determined soul she is, kept a steady pace, reminding me to take it slow and steady. I swear, her software development skills translate into real-life problem-solving abilities, even on a mountain!
The trail wound its way through the rocky landscape, and we passed several small streams fed by the melting glaciers above. The flora here is unique; I spotted a few *Puya raimondii*, the Queen of the Andes, standing tall against the backdrop of the mountains. I had read about them, but seeing them in person was something else. These plants are like something out of a prehistoric landscape. I wish I had remembered to pack our binoculars, as I would have loved to have gotten a closer look at the local birdlife.
As we climbed higher, the views became even more spectacular. The snow-capped peaks of Huascarán dominated the horizon, their jagged edges piercing the sky. It was a humbling sight, a reminder of the power and majesty of nature. I couldn't help but think of my little orchard back in Kelowna and how insignificant it seemed compared to this landscape.
The mountains are calling and I must go.
We reached a point where we could see a stunning waterfall cascading down the mountainside. It was a bit of a detour, but Aaliyah insisted we get closer. I'm glad we did. The Catarata, as the locals call it, was a sight to behold. The water thundered down, creating a fine mist that felt refreshing on our faces. We spent a good half-hour just watching the water, mesmerized by its power and beauty.

By lunchtime, we were both ravenous. We found a sheltered spot with a view and unpacked the lunch we had bought in Huaraz. Simple sandwiches, fruit, and some local cheese – but it tasted like a feast with that view. I tried to capture the moment with my camera, but photos never quite do justice to the real thing.
After lunch, we decided to explore a different part of the park, heading towards a trail that promised more waterfall views. This trail was a bit more challenging, with some steep ascents and rocky sections. But the scenery was worth the effort. We passed through areas of high Andean forest and montane grasslands, each with its own unique charm.
I spotted a few vicuñas in the distance, grazing peacefully on the slopes. These creatures are incredibly graceful, and it was a privilege to see them in their natural habitat. Aaliyah was thrilled, as she had been hoping to see some of the local wildlife.
As the afternoon wore on, the weather started to change. The clouds gathered, and there was a hint of rain in the air. We decided to start heading back, not wanting to get caught in a downpour at high altitude.
The hike back was tough, my legs were beginning to feel like lead. But the thought of a hot meal and a cold drink kept me going. We made it back to the car just as the first drops of rain started to fall. Perfect timing!
We drove back to Huaraz, tired but exhilarated. After freshening up at our accommodation, we headed out for dinner at El Fogón. This restaurant had been recommended to us by a local, and it didn't disappoint. The food was hearty and delicious, exactly what we needed after a day of hiking. I had a *lomo saltado*, and Aaliyah opted for the *trucha frita*. Both were excellent. The service was quick and the atmosphere offered an outdoor view from the second floor.

To cap off the evening, we decided to check out a local bar called CHAC BAR (CHACPIBAR). It was a lively spot, with a good mix of locals and tourists. We enjoyed a couple of pisco sours, chatting about our day and planning our next adventure. It was a perfect end to a perfect day.

As I sit here writing this, my body aches, but my heart is full. Huascaran National Park is a truly special place, a place of immense beauty and challenge. I feel grateful to have had the opportunity to experience it with Aaliyah. It’s experiences like these that make me appreciate the simple things in life – good company, stunning scenery, and a sense of accomplishment.
Tomorrow, we're planning to visit Huaraz Zipline Adventures for a thrilling experience, followed by a visit to the Obelisc. Then, we plan on grabbing dinner at Wayta - El Chef Andino and drinks at El Alquimista Rooftop Bar. I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow brings!
