Exploring the Majestic Dades Valley

A Valley of Astonishment
The Dades Valley continues to surprise me with its otherworldly landscapes and the warmth of its people. Today was a sensory overload in the best way possible, from the unique rock formations to the fragrant rose fields. It was a day of exploration that has left me in awe of Morocco's natural beauty.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe restaurant Oussikis. Fuelled by traditional Moroccan fare, I set off to explore the famed Pattes Des Singes – the Monkey Fingers.

Monkeying Around

The rock formations at Pattes Des Singes were truly something out of a fantasy novel. As the sun climbed higher, the shadows danced around the 'monkey fingers,' creating an ethereal atmosphere. I spent a good couple of hours scrambling around, camera in hand, trying to capture the perfect angle of these geological wonders.

I couldn't help but think how Aaliyah would have loved this place. She's always been fascinated by unique geological formations. I made a mental note to find a beautiful rock to bring back to Kelowna for her garden.

Winding Through Tisderine

Next on the agenda was the Tisderine bends. The drive there was an adventure in itself, with the road winding and twisting through the rugged terrain. When I finally reached the viewpoint, I was struck by the panoramic vista of the Dades Valley. The road snaked its way through the landscape, a ribbon of asphalt against the ochre and red hues of the rocks.

I took a moment to simply breathe in the view, feeling grateful for the chance to witness such raw beauty. It reminded me of some of the scenic drives Aaliyah and I have taken through the Okanagan Valley, although this was on a completely different scale.

I stopped for lunch at Canyon Dades Restaurant, which offered stunning views and delicious local cuisine. I opted for a tagine, savoring the blend of spices and tender meat as I gazed out over the canyon. The friendly staff were more than happy to share tips about local hiking trails, making me wish I had more time to explore the area on foot.

Sometimes, the most rewarding experiences are the ones that challenge your perspective and remind you of the immense beauty our planet holds.

A Whiff of Roses

The final stop of the day was the Roses Valley. By this time, the sun was beginning to dip towards the horizon, casting a golden glow over the landscape. As I entered the valley, I was immediately enveloped by the delicate fragrance of roses.

Although it's not the peak season for roses, there were still plenty of opportunities to see the local rose products. I visited a small shop where a local artisan showed me how rosewater and rose oil are extracted. I picked up a few bottles of rosewater to bring home – Aaliyah uses it in her skincare routine, and I knew she'd appreciate the authentic Moroccan variety.

I learned that the best time to visit the Roses Valley is during the spring, particularly in May, when the roses are in full bloom and the annual Rose Festival takes place. The whole valley comes alive with celebrations, music, and the intoxicating scent of millions of roses. I'm already contemplating a return trip next year with Aaliyah to experience this spectacle together.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I stopped at CAFE RESTAURANT AIT SEDRAT for a refreshing drink. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring, with a lively atmosphere and friendly locals. Sipping on mint tea, I watched the sunset paint the sky in hues of orange and pink, feeling a deep sense of contentment.

As I reflect on today's adventures, I am struck by the diversity of landscapes within the Dades Valley. From the towering rock formations of the Monkey Fingers to the winding roads of Tisderine and the fragrant fields of the Roses Valley, each location offered a unique and unforgettable experience. The warmth and hospitality of the Berber people I encountered along the way only added to the magic of the day.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the Dadès Vallei and CANYON DADES, hoping to capture more of its stunning beauty with my camera. I've heard whispers of hidden gorges and breathtaking viewpoints, and I can't wait to uncover them. A delicious dinner at Chez Pierre will be the perfect way to end the day.

I'm also considering a visit to the DADES VERT shop to pick up some local crafts and souvenirs. Aaliyah always appreciates handmade items, and I'm sure I'll find something special to remind her of this incredible journey.

Even though I miss Aaliyah, I know she would want me to embrace this solo adventure fully. I'm looking forward to whatever tomorrow brings, knowing that the Dades Valley still has many secrets to reveal.
