Day 7: Hot Springs and High Spirits in Zao Onsen

Today was a perfect blend of relaxation and exploration here in Zao Onsen. After several days of immersing ourselves in the local culture, Aaliyah and I decided to dedicate today to fully experiencing what this mountain village is most famous for: its rejuvenating hot springs and stunning natural landscapes. It's amazing how much a change of pace can do for the soul, and today was exactly what we needed.

Our day began, as most have on this trip, with a delightful breakfast at Omiya Ryokan. The traditional Japanese spread always sets a positive tone for the day, filling us up with just the right amount of energy for whatever adventures lie ahead. After breakfast, Aaliyah and I decided to start our day with some exploration.

Hitting the Slopes (Without the Snow!)

Even though it's June, we couldn't resist visiting the Zao Onsen Ski Resort. I know, I know, no snow in June sounds a bit odd for a ski resort visit! But, the slopes themselves offer incredible panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. We took a leisurely stroll around the base area, imagining what it must be like in the heart of winter, covered in snow and bustling with skiers. It's hard to picture the famous 'snow monsters' this time of year, but the skeletal frames of the ski lifts against the green mountainside were beautiful in their own way. I even popped into the ROSSIGNOL STORE, figuring I might find some off-season deals on gear for future trips. While I didn't end up buying anything, it was fun to browse and dream of carving through fresh powder. The store was well-stocked with outdoor gear and apparel, and the staff were incredibly helpful, offering advice on local hiking trails and other summer activities. It reminded me of the gear shops back in Kelowna, but with a distinctly Japanese flair.

A Culinary Interlude at Unite Cafe

After our brief foray into the world of (imaginary) skiing, we worked up an appetite. We decided to have lunch at Unite Cafe. This cozy spot came highly recommended, and it didn't disappoint. The cafe had a laid-back, international vibe, with a menu featuring dishes from around the world. Aaliyah opted for a delicious-looking plate of spare ribs, while I went for a hearty burger. Both were fantastic, and we especially enjoyed the cafe's relaxed atmosphere and friendly service. It was the perfect place to recharge before our next adventure. Sipping on a cold drink, looking out at the mountains, I felt a sense of contentment wash over me.

Dipping into Tradition at Zao Onsen Shitayu Public Bathhouse

No trip to Zao Onsen would be complete without a visit to one of its famed bathhouses. We chose the Zao Onsen Shitayu Public Bathhouse, a traditional spot known for its therapeutic waters. As someone who appreciates a good soak after a long day—or, in this case, a long trip—I was eager to experience this quintessential Japanese tradition. The bathhouse itself was simple but charming, with separate bathing areas for men and women. The water was hot, mineral-rich, and incredibly soothing. It was the perfect way to unwind and let go of any lingering tension. I couldn't help but think of my grandfather back in Apeldoorn, who swore by the healing powers of natural springs. I'm starting to think he was onto something!

Savoring the Flavors of Sugenoya

For dinner, we decided to try Sugenoya, a restaurant known for its local cuisine and cozy atmosphere. The restaurant was warm and inviting, with a menu featuring a variety of Yamagata specialties. Aaliyah and I decided to share a few dishes, including Yamagata beef roast beef and garlic rice. The food was delicious, and the service was excellent. It was the perfect way to end a relaxing and fulfilling day.

Looking Ahead

As I sit here writing this, feeling thoroughly relaxed and content, I can't help but look forward to what tomorrow holds. We're planning a visit to the Zaō Fox Village, which I know Aaliyah is particularly excited about. Apparently, it's a sanctuary where foxes roam freely, and visitors can get up close and personal with these adorable creatures. After that, we're hoping to check out the Sankai Falls viewing platform for some more stunning views of the surrounding landscape. And of course, we'll be starting our day with another delicious breakfast at Omiya Ryokan. In the evening, we plan to try out stand MY for dinner. After dinner we are planning to check out 50's cocktail's bar Cool (クール).

One thing I forgot to pack was my Japanese language phrasebook. While many people speak some English, knowing a few basic phrases would definitely enhance the experience. I guess I'll have to rely on Aaliyah's charm and my (very) limited Dutch to get by. It's all part of the adventure, right?

Tonight, as I reflect on our experiences here in Zao Onsen, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude. This trip has been everything we hoped for and more: a chance to relax, reconnect, and immerse ourselves in a beautiful and fascinating culture. I'm excited to see what the rest of our adventure brings, but for now, I'm content to simply savor the moment and appreciate the tranquility of this mountain paradise.

The weather in Zao Onsen in June is quite pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 15°C to 23°C. However, it's also known to be quite rainy, with an average of 19 rainy days in the month. So, packing a light rain jacket is definitely a good idea! It seems the weather forecast for the next few days is consistent with this pattern, so we'll be sure to come prepared.

Tomorrow promises more adventures, and I can’t wait to share them with you all. Until then, cheers from Zao Onsen!
