Adrenaline and Awe in Plitvice

Today was all about embracing the adventurous side of Plitvice Lakes National Park and its surroundings. While the cascading waterfalls are the main draw, I was eager to explore the area from a different perspective, both high in the air and along the dramatic Korana Canyon. I was a bit nervous about the ziplining, but Marko was so excited, and Greta, as always, was up for anything!

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Bistro Hladovina. As the name suggests, the bistro offered a pleasant shade, which was really welcome considering it is summer. We fueled up with some local pastries and strong coffee, ready for the day’s adventures. Marko was particularly excited, chattering non-stop about flying like a superhero. After breakfast, we headed towards Zipline Pazi Medo.

Zipline Pazi Medo: A Bird's-Eye View of Lika

The drive to Zipline Pazi Medo took us through some beautiful countryside. Rolling hills and quaint villages dotted the landscape. When we arrived, I have to admit, I felt a surge of adrenaline mixed with a healthy dose of apprehension. The zipline is known as one of the longest in Europe, stretching 1.7 kilometers! But seeing the excitement in Marko's eyes and the reassuring smiles of the staff put me at ease. This zipline was founded to offer an exciting adventure to guests from all over the world.

After a thorough safety briefing, we were strapped into our harnesses and helmets. Marko, of course, went first, and his shriek of delight as he launched into the air was infectious. Greta followed, and then it was my turn. Taking that first step off the platform was exhilarating! The wind rushed past my face as I soared through the air, suspended high above the ground. The views were simply breathtaking – rolling hills, dense forests, and the distant peaks of the Velebit mountains. It was an incredible way to appreciate the scale and beauty of the Lika region.

It's not just about the thrill of the ride; it's an immersive experience that connects you with the magnificent surroundings.

Marko, of course, declared it the best thing he had ever done. Even Greta, who usually prefers a gentle hike, admitted that the zipline was an unforgettable experience. I had to agree; it was an adrenaline rush combined with stunning scenery that I wouldn't soon forget. I felt like a kid again, carefree and full of joy. I was glad I could share this experience with my family. It's moments like these that make our travels so special. They create memories that we will cherish for years to come.

Korana Canyon: A Hike Through Nature's Masterpiece

After our high-flying adventure, we were ready for something a little more grounded. We drove back towards Plitvice Lakes National Park and set out to explore the Korana Canyon walking path. This was something I was looking forward to, as I'd read about the stunning views and the chance to experience the park from a different angle. The Korana River originates where the Plitvica stream flows into the Sastavci over a steep cliff, creating the Great Waterfall.

The starting point of the trail was easy to find, and we set off at a leisurely pace. The path meandered along the edge of the canyon, offering incredible vistas of the turquoise Korana River snaking its way through the landscape. The late afternoon sun cast long shadows, creating a magical atmosphere. The trail was well-maintained and easy to navigate, making it perfect for a family hike.

Marko, still buzzing from the zipline, was full of energy, scrambling over rocks and pointing out interesting plants and insects. Greta and I enjoyed the peacefulness of the surroundings, the only sounds the gentle rush of the river and the chirping of birds. We stopped at several viewpoints to soak in the scenery and take photos. The canyon walls were covered in lush vegetation, creating a vibrant tapestry of greens and browns. It was a truly immersive experience, a chance to connect with nature and appreciate the raw beauty of this part of Croatia.

The Korana Canyon walking path offers a tranquil and less crowded experience compared to the lower lakes. The vibrant wildlife complements the area's natural charm, making every hike a unique experience. We only encountered a few other hikers along the way, which added to the sense of solitude and serenity. It was a welcome contrast to the bustling crowds around the main Plitvice Lakes area.

As we hiked, I thought about my childhood in Croatia, growing up in Varaždin, and how much I appreciate being able to share this natural beauty with my family. It's important for Marko to connect with his Croatian heritage, to understand where I come from and to appreciate the landscapes that shaped me. I hope that these experiences will instill in him a sense of pride and a desire to protect the environment for future generations.

Souvenirs and Sustenance

Before heading back to our accommodation, we stopped at the Lika Quality Souvenir Shop. I wanted to find a special memento of our trip, something that would remind us of our adventures in Plitvice. The shop was filled with local crafts, textiles, and culinary delights, all reflecting the rich heritage of the Lika region. I ended up buying a hand-carved wooden toy for Marko and some local honey for Greta. I also picked up a small bottle of *šljivovica* (plum brandy) for myself, a taste of home.

For dinner, we decided to try Restaurant Plitvice. We were all exhausted from our day of adventures, but the thought of a hearty meal was enough to keep us going. The restaurant offered a traditional Lika cuisine, which was exactly what we needed. We feasted on grilled meats, roasted vegetables, and homemade bread. Marko, despite his earlier enthusiasm, was asleep before his dessert arrived.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the beauty and adventure of Plitvice Lakes National Park with my family. It was a day of soaring through the skies, hiking through stunning landscapes, and connecting with nature and each other. These are the moments that make travel so rewarding, the memories that we will cherish for a lifetime.

Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Rastoke, a charming village known for its waterfalls and historic watermills [If last day of trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I'm excited to discover another hidden gem in this beautiful region of Croatia. I am sure Marko will love it too!
