Whispers of the White Mountains

Today’s adventure took us to the heart of Crete, a world away from the coastal resorts and bustling cities. We traded sandy beaches for rugged peaks, and the gentle sea breeze for the crisp mountain air. It was a day of exploration and discovery, a chance to connect with nature and experience the authentic soul of this beautiful island.

The drive to the Omalos plateau was an experience in itself. Winding roads snaked their way up into the White Mountains, each turn revealing panoramic vistas of the Cretan landscape. Olive groves and vineyards carpeted the lower slopes, gradually giving way to forests of pine and cypress as we climbed higher. The air grew cooler, carrying the scent of wild herbs and the distant bleating of goats. It reminded me of driving through the Croatian countryside back home, a comforting familiarity amidst the new surroundings.

Our first stop was the Omalos plateau itself, a high-altitude plain surrounded by towering peaks. The name 'Omalos' means 'even' or 'smooth' in Greek, a fitting description for this surprisingly flat expanse nestled in the heart of the mountains. It felt like stepping into a hidden world, a secret valley far removed from the cares of everyday life. Greta was immediately captivated by the wildflowers dotting the landscape, their vibrant colors a stark contrast to the grey rock. Marko, of course, was more interested in chasing butterflies, his laughter echoing through the clear mountain air.

We started our day with a hearty breakfast at Rousios. The aroma of freshly baked bread and strong Greek coffee filled the air. I went with traditional dakos, a barley rusk topped with tomatoes, feta, and oregano. It’s simple, but the flavors are so fresh and vibrant – a perfect way to start a day of hiking. Greta opted for the yogurt with honey and nuts, while Marko devoured a croissant with alarming speed. Fueled up, we were ready to explore.

The mountains are calling and I must go. - John Muir

Our main objective for the day was to explore the White Mountains Forest Preserve. We decided to take a leisurely hike along one of the many trails, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty of the area. The White Mountains, or Lefka Ori, are the largest mountain range in Crete, their peaks often covered in snow well into spring. The landscape is rugged and dramatic, with towering cliffs, deep gorges, and hidden valleys. It's a hiker's paradise, offering a variety of trails to suit all levels of experience.

As we walked, we were surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature. Birds sang from the treetops, their melodies filling the air. Lizards darted across the path, disappearing into the undergrowth. The views were simply breathtaking, stretching out across the mountains and down to the coast. I felt a sense of peace and tranquility, a feeling of being completely connected to the natural world.

I was reminded of a quote I once read by John Muir: The mountains are calling and I must go. It perfectly captured the feeling of being drawn to these majestic peaks, a yearning to explore their hidden depths and discover their secrets. It’s a feeling I understand deeply, a connection to nature that has always been a part of me. Perhaps it’s the Croatian in me, the call of the Dinaric Alps that echoes in my soul.

We stumbled upon a traditional shepherd's hut, or 'Mitato' as they are called in Crete. These simple stone structures are used by shepherds as temporary shelters during the grazing season. It was a glimpse into a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries, a testament to the enduring connection between the Cretan people and their land. I imagined shepherds of old seeking refuge in this very hut, finding solace in the rugged landscape, much like we were doing today. It was a humbling experience, a reminder of the simple pleasures in life.

After our hike, we stopped at 'Nature - Cretan natural products'. I was intrigued by the array of local goods on display: herbs, spices, honey, olive oil, and traditional crafts. We ended up buying some local thyme honey, known for its distinct aroma and medicinal properties. Greta stocked up on some natural cosmetics made with olive oil and beeswax , while Marko chose a small wooden shepherd figurine. It’s always nice to support local businesses and take home a little piece of the place we’ve visited.

For dinner, we decided to try Pension Paradise, enticed by its promise of traditional Cretan cuisine. We were not disappointed. We started with a selection of mezze, including tzatziki, dolmades, and fried zucchini. For the main course, I opted for the lamb kleftiko, slow-cooked in parchment paper with herbs and vegetables. The meat was incredibly tender and flavorful, falling off the bone with ease. Greta chose the moussaka, a classic Greek dish of layered eggplant, potatoes, and meat sauce topped with béchamel. Marko, predictably, ordered the souvlaki, grilled meat skewers served with pita bread and fries. We finished the meal with some fresh fruit and a glass of local raki, a strong spirit made from grapes. It was the perfect end to a perfect day.

As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the mountains, we made our way back to our guesthouse. The air was cool and crisp, carrying the scent of pine and wildflowers. The stars began to appear, twinkling in the clear night sky. I felt a sense of contentment and gratitude, a feeling of having experienced something truly special.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, we're planning to explore the Tripiti Gorge and the forest of Kormokopou [If Last Day of Trip, merge in “Trip end”]. I’ve heard that Tripiti Gorge is less crowded than Samaria, offering a more secluded hiking experience. I’m also looking forward to visiting the forest of Kormokopou, known for its ancient trees and diverse wildlife.

Before heading to bed, I checked online to see if there were any local events happening. I discovered that on May 11th, there's a 21.6 km mountain trail running competition called 'SAMARIA' and a 7 km 'OMALOS RUN'. It sounds intense! I admire the dedication of these athletes. Maybe next time I'll train and participate. For now, I'll stick to leisurely hikes.

As I drifted off to sleep, I couldn't help but feel grateful for this opportunity to explore the beauty and wonder of Crete with my family. It's moments like these that make life truly special, creating memories that will last a lifetime. And who knows what adventures tomorrow will bring?

Final Reflections

Today was a reminder of why I love to travel. It's not just about seeing new places, it's about experiencing new cultures, connecting with nature, and creating memories with loved ones. It's about stepping outside of my comfort zone and embracing the unknown. And it's about discovering the beauty and wonder that exists in every corner of this amazing world.

The Omalos plateau and the White Mountains are a testament to the power and beauty of nature. They are a reminder of the importance of preserving our natural heritage for future generations. And they are a reminder that sometimes, the greatest adventures are found not in the most popular tourist destinations, but in the hidden corners of the world, waiting to be discovered.

Tomorrow, we venture into new terrains. I’m eager to see what Tripiti Gorge holds and to wander through the ancient forest of Kormokopou. Until then, goodnight from Crete!
