Day 7: Stone, Water, and Mountain Air: Discovering Rondane's Hidden Gems
Exploring Rondane National Park's serene beauty: Steinarbeideren's artistry, Rv's Waterfall's majesty, and local flavors create unforgettable memories.
A Day of Discovery in Rondane
Today was a day of wandering, of letting the landscape guide my steps and the crisp mountain air fill my lungs. It's days like these that remind me why I started this solo journey in the first place – to reconnect with nature and find a sense of peace away from the daily grind back in Heidelberg. I didn't have a rigid plan, just a desire to explore and soak in the raw beauty of Rondane National Park.
My day began with a hearty breakfast at Rondane Gjestegård. The breakfast buffet was simple, yet satisfying, providing the perfect fuel for a day of exploration. I enjoyed some freshly baked bread, cheese, and strong coffee while looking out at the snow-dusted landscape. It's amazing how much better food tastes when you're surrounded by such incredible scenery. It reminded me a bit of breakfasts back home in Croatia, simple and delicious.
With a full stomach, I set out to find Steinarbeideren i Parken, a stone sculpture in Otta. It was a pleasant surprise to find such an artistic touch amidst the natural beauty. The sculpture, set against the backdrop of the park, seemed to blend seamlessly with its surroundings, a testament to the artist's skill and vision. I spent some time admiring the details, pondering the story the stone seemed to tell. It's funny, back in Heidelberg, I'm surrounded by modern architecture, but there's something grounding about this blend of art and nature.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, a quiet connection with nature's artistry.
Next on my list was Rv’s Waterfall, a natural attraction I’d read about. The drive there was scenic, with snow-covered trees lining the road. As I approached, I could hear the roar of the water, a powerful symphony that grew louder with each step. The waterfall was stunning, a cascade of water plunging down the rocky cliffs. I took some photos, trying to capture its grandeur, but no image could truly do it justice. I hiked around the area, enjoying the fresh air and the mesmerizing display of water and light. The path was well-maintained but did involve some gentle inclines. The waterfall is particularly beautiful during the spring melt when the water is at its fullest. Surrounded by lush greenery and the serene sounds of nature, Rv's Waterfall serves as a perfect retreat for those seeking a peaceful escape and a connection with the great outdoors.

After a morning of sightseeing, I stopped for lunch at Rondane Fjellstue. This cozy mountain lodge had a rustic charm, with wooden beams and a crackling fireplace. I ordered a traditional Norwegian dish, reindeer stew, which was hearty and flavorful. It was the perfect meal to warm me up after being out in the cold. Chatting with some other travelers, I learned about the history of the lodge and the surrounding area. It's always interesting to hear different perspectives and stories from people you meet on the road.

In the late afternoon, I decided to check out Ysteriet, a local bar in Sel. It turned out to be a delightful spot, with a friendly atmosphere and a good selection of local beers. I sampled a few, chatting with the locals and learning about their way of life. It was a great way to unwind and experience the local culture. I even tried some local goat cheese, which was surprisingly delicious.

As evening approached, I made my way to Rondane Haukliseter Fjellhotel for dinner. The hotel is located at an elevation of 1000 meters above sea level. The dining room had panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. For dinner, I enjoyed a meal prepared with local ingredients, savoring each bite as I watched the sunset over the mountains. The hotel also offers comfortable rooms, charming cabins and modern apartments. The combination of good food and stunning scenery made for a perfect end to the day.

Reflecting on the day, I realized how much I appreciated the simple things – the beauty of nature, the warmth of good food, and the kindness of strangers. It's these moments that make traveling so rewarding. It also made me realize how much I miss Greta and Marko. I'm looking forward to sharing these experiences with them someday.
Tomorrow, I plan to visit Jora Bru Dombås and Klokkesteinen, hoping to uncover more of Rondane's hidden gems. I'm also looking forward to breakfast at Spidsbergseter Resort Rondane and dinner at Rondane Høyfjellshotell. I'm also planning to visit Huset med det rare I, a local shop. I'm excited to see what tomorrow brings and to continue exploring this beautiful part of Norway.
The weather in Rondane National Park in March can be quite variable. Temperatures typically range from 20°F to 37°F. It's important to be prepared for all types of weather conditions, as the weather can change quickly in the mountains.
Rondane National Park is Norway's oldest national park, established in 1962. The park is known for its diverse mountainous region, featuring remarkable mountain landscapes that surround extensive plateaus. The park is also an important habitat for herds of wild reindeer. Rondane is a popular walking area, but it is important to have some consideration for the flora and fauna, especially the wild reindeer. The park offers marked trails, serviced cabins, mountain walking, tours to the peaks, fishing, and hunting.
As I settle in for the night, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for this incredible experience. Rondane National Park has a way of captivating you with its natural beauty and serene atmosphere. It's a place where you can truly disconnect from the world and reconnect with yourself. I encourage anyone looking for an escape to consider visiting this hidden gem in Norway. And now, it's time for me to get some rest and prepare for another day of adventure. Good night from Rondane!
