A Solo Adventure in Yakushima's Ancient Forests
Day 9: Farewell Yakushima: Turtle Tales and Botanical Bliss
Reflecting on my final day in Yakushima, exploring sea turtles, serene gardens, and savoring local gelato before heading home.
Adieu, Yakushima!
As my final day on this enchanting island unfolded, I found myself reflecting on the incredible journey I’ve had. From conquering ancient cedar forests to witnessing breathtaking waterfalls, Yakushima has truly captured a piece of my heart. Today was all about soaking in the last moments of tranquility and natural beauty before my trip back to Kelowna.
My morning began with a hearty breakfast at Smiley, a cozy spot I’d discovered earlier in the week. Fuelled up with a delicious meal, I set off to the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. I was particularly excited about this visit, given my interest in wildlife conservation. Olivia and Thando would have loved this place!
The Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall was a truly enriching experience. The museum is dedicated to the preservation and education of sea turtles, offering a unique glimpse into their lives and the environmental challenges they face. The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, highlighting the biology, behavior, and habitats of these magnificent creatures. It was fascinating to learn about the different species of sea turtles that call Yakushima home, and the incredible journey they undertake to nest on the island's shores. The interactive displays and stunning photographs really brought the marine environment to life. I learned about the local conservation efforts and how visitors can contribute to the well-being of the turtles and their habitat. It was a truly humbling experience, reinforcing the importance of protecting these endangered species.

The beauty of Yakushima lies not only in its landscapes but also in its dedication to preserving its natural treasures.
After spending a couple of hours at the Sea Turtle Hall, I felt a sense of peace and inspiration. It’s amazing to see how much dedication and effort goes into protecting these creatures. It made me think about the conservation efforts back home in Canada, and how we can all do our part to protect the environment.
Next on the agenda was a visit to the Botanic Gardens. As a keen photographer, I was eager to capture the lush greenery and diverse ecosystems of this UNESCO World Heritage site. The gardens are home to an impressive collection of native and exotic flora. Winding paths led me through vibrant blooms, towering trees, and tranquil ponds that reflected the beauty of the surrounding landscape. I spent a good amount of time wandering through the gardens, admiring the meticulous maintenance and educational displays about the island's unique biodiversity. The knowledgeable staff were on hand to provide insights into the various plant species and their significance within the local ecosystem.

I found a peaceful spot to sit and sketch some of the unique flowers I encountered. It was incredibly relaxing to just sit there, surrounded by nature, and let my creativity flow. I even managed to capture a few decent photographs that I know Olivia will appreciate. She always encourages my artistic side, and I can't wait to show her my Yakushima-inspired artwork.
For lunch, I decided to try Wakadaisho, a local restaurant known for its authentic Japanese cuisine. I opted for a traditional bento box, filled with a variety of local delicacies. It was a delicious and satisfying meal, providing the perfect energy boost for the rest of the day's adventures. I savored every bite, knowing that it would be one of my last opportunities to enjoy authentic Japanese food for a while.

No trip is complete without indulging in some local treats, so I made a stop at Yakushima Gelato Sora-Umi. This charming gelato shop is known for its unique flavors made from local ingredients. I decided to try the ocean salt and purple sweet potato flavors, both of which were absolutely delicious. The gelato had a unique texture, and the flavors were perfectly balanced – not too sweet, but incredibly satisfying. I sat outside, enjoying my gelato and soaking in the serene atmosphere. It was the perfect way to end my culinary adventures on the island.

As the sun began to set, I found myself at Il Mare for my final dinner in Yakushima. I decided to treat myself to a seafood feast, sampling some of the freshest fish I’ve ever tasted. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly friendly, making me feel right at home. I reflected on my journey, feeling grateful for the incredible experiences and memories I’ve made. This solo trip was exactly what I needed – a chance to reconnect with nature, challenge myself, and gain a new perspective on life.

Tomorrow, I will be heading back to Kagoshima for my flight to Tokyo, and then finally back to Kelowna. While I’m excited to see Olivia and Thando, I know I’ll miss the tranquility and natural beauty of Yakushima. This island has a way of capturing your heart and leaving you with a sense of wonder. I’m already planning my next trip back, and I can’t wait to share this magical place with my family.
As I prepare to leave, I’m filled with a sense of gratitude and accomplishment. Yakushima has challenged me, inspired me, and reminded me of the importance of connecting with nature. This solo adventure has been an incredible journey of self-discovery, and I’m excited to bring these experiences back home with me. Until next time, Yakushima – thank you for the memories.
I am already envisaging telling Thando all about the turtles and the interesting plants and flowers in the botanic gardens! Maybe one day soon I can bring him here, and we can discover the magic of Yakushima together!
