Discover the spiritual heart of Australia with a base walk, Indigenous cuisine, and a mesmerizing journey through the outback sky.
Under the Red Rock: A Day of Discovery
Today was a day of deep connection with Uluru and its surroundings. From feeling the ancient energy of the rock on a base walk to marveling at the stars in the vast outback sky, it was an experience that touched my soul. I'm eager to share the highlights of our eighth day in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park with Olivia, Thando, and all of you.
Our day began with an early start at the Pira Pool Bar for breakfast. The Pira Pool Bar, located at Sails in the Desert, offered a refreshing start to the day. While I opted for a simple coffee, Olivia enjoyed a light pastry, and Thando devoured a stack of pancakes. It was a relaxed way to prepare for our walk around the base of Uluru. I made sure to pack extra water, remembering our forgotten portable charger and insect repellent from the trip essentials.
Fueled up, we set off for the Uluru Base Walk. The sheer size of Uluru up close is humbling. As we started our trek, the immensity and majesty of Uluru became palpable. The crisp morning air and the rising sun painted the rock in hues of orange and red, making it a photographer's dream. Thando was particularly excited, pointing out every little detail, from the textures of the rock to the tiny insects scurrying about. The Uluru Base Walk is an iconic experience, and I was eager to share it with my family.

The Uluru Base Walk is more than just a hike; it's a journey through time and culture, a chance to connect with the heart of Australia.
The walk itself was relatively easy, a flat, well-maintained path stretching just over 10 kilometers. We took our time, soaking in the scenery and the stories our guide shared about the Anangu people and their connection to this sacred site. We learned about the Dreamtime stories associated with various formations and caves along the way. I made sure to keep an eye out for unique angles and compositions, knowing these photos would be treasured memories.
We paused at several significant spots, including ancient caves adorned with rock art. Our guide explained the meanings behind the symbols, offering a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage of the area. Thando was fascinated by the stories, asking endless questions about the people who created the art and the animals they depicted. Olivia and I were equally captivated, feeling a deep sense of connection to the land and its history.
After a few hours of walking and exploring, we made our way to the Kulata Academy Cafe for lunch. Knowing that the cafe supports trainees from the National Indigenous Training Academy made the meal even more meaningful. I chose a hearty beef brisket pie, while Olivia enjoyed a fresh Mediterranean chickpea salad. Thando, of course, opted for a classic: a chunky steak, cheese, and bacon pie. The food was delicious, and the service was warm and welcoming.

With the afternoon sun beginning to dip, we took some time to relax back at our campsite. Thando played with his toy cars, Olivia read a book about the local flora and fauna, and I reviewed the photos I'd taken throughout the day. We chatted about our favorite moments from the walk and the stories we had learned. It was a perfect moment of family bonding, surrounded by the beauty of the outback.
As dusk approached, we prepared for our Outback Sky Journeys experience. This was something I was particularly excited about, given my interest in astronomy. As darkness descended, the outback sky came alive with a brilliance I had never witnessed before. Far from city lights, the stars shone with an intensity that was almost overwhelming.

The Outback Sky Journeys tour was both educational and awe-inspiring. Our guide, a knowledgeable astronomer, pointed out constellations, planets, and galaxies, sharing fascinating facts about the universe. Thando was wide-eyed with wonder, peppering the guide with questions about black holes and distant planets. Olivia and I were equally mesmerized, feeling a sense of insignificance and awe in the face of such vastness.
The guide also shared ancient Indigenous stories connected to the night sky, weaving together astronomy and cultural heritage. It was fascinating to learn how the Anangu people have used the stars for navigation, timekeeping, and storytelling for thousands of years. This blending of science and culture made the experience even more enriching.
After our celestial journey, we headed to the Outback BBQ & Bar for dinner. The atmosphere was lively, with fellow travelers gathering to share stories and enjoy a classic Aussie barbecue. I chose a mixed grill, eager to sample some local meats, while Olivia opted for the lamb chops. Thando was thrilled with his pork sausages. The food was hearty and satisfying, and the live entertainment added to the festive atmosphere.

To cap off the evening, Olivia and I decided to sneak away for a quiet drink at the Walpa Lobby Bar. We sipped on signature cocktails, reflecting on the incredible day we had experienced. The Walpa Lobby Bar, named for the Pitjantjatjara word for wind, was the perfect spot to unwind and savor the memories we had created.

Uluru has a way of getting under your skin, of stirring something deep within your soul. I know that the memories we have made here will stay with us long after we return to Kelowna.
