Following Ancient Footsteps

Today was a day of connecting with the land and its stories. The red heart of Australia pulsed with ancient energy as we explored the trails and vistas of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. It’s amazing how a place can feel both timeless and intensely present, a feeling I wanted to share with Olivia and Thando.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Ininti Cafe & Souvenirs. Fuelled up with coffee and some delicious pastries, we set out to explore the Liru Track. The crisp morning air was invigorating, a welcome contrast to the Kelowna mornings we’re used to, and the landscape was already bathed in that iconic red glow. It was a good thing that we charged our camera batteries last night, because the landscape was so beautiful that we had to take a lot of photos. The Liru Track, as I learned, connects the Cultural Centre to the base of Uluru, winding through a mulga forest.

The walk was relatively easy, perfect for Thando, who was excited to spot any wildlife along the way. The Liru Track is about 4km and took us about 1.5 hours to complete. As we walked, I tried to imagine the Anangu people who have walked this land for thousands of years, their stories etched into the very rocks around us. The path was teeming with colorful wildflowers, which I later learned, sprout after it rains. The walk provided beautiful, uninterrupted views of Uluru and the surrounding landscape. We even found a large shelter that’s considered one of the park’s best-kept secrets.

The land doesn't just hold stories; it whispers them to those who listen.

After our walk, we headed to the Ayer’s Rock Town Centre for a bit of shopping. Olivia wanted to pick up a few souvenirs, and I was on the hunt for a new hat – I seemed to have misplaced mine somewhere between the campsite and the Cultural Centre. Thando, of course, was more interested in the ice cream shop, which we eventually gave in to.

Lunch was at Mangata Bistro & Bar, where we enjoyed some delicious sandwiches and salads. The relaxed atmosphere was perfect for recharging before our next adventure: the Kata Tjuṯa Dunes Viewing Area.

Driving towards Kata Tjuṯa, the landscape shifted, the single monolith of Uluru giving way to the collection of rounded domes that make up Kata Tjuṯa. The views from the Kata Tjuṯa Dunes Viewing Area were simply breathtaking. From there, you can see panoramic views of Kata Tjuṯa, with Uluru visible on the horizon. We spent a good hour there, just soaking it all in. I tried to capture the scene with my camera, but no photo could truly do it justice. It’s a place you have to experience to fully appreciate. The Traditional Owners ask that when photographing Kata Tjuṯa, you keep at least three domes in the frame to avoid revealing sacred places.

As the sun began to dip lower, we made our way back towards the resort, ready for dinner at Ilkari Restaurant. The restaurant offered a sophisticated end to our day, with a menu that highlighted local ingredients. Over dinner, we talked about everything we had seen and done, Thando excitedly recounting his favorite parts of the day. Olivia mentioned how much she enjoyed the Liru Track and the wildflowers along the way. I was already looking forward to tomorrow’s adventure: the Uluru Base Walk and a stargazing experience with Outback Sky Journeys.

Back at the campsite, as I zipped up the tent and the stars began to pepper the night sky, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. This trip, this experience, was exactly what we needed. A chance to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with each other and the land. Even though I forgot the portable phone charger and insect repellent, I felt like I had everything I needed right here. Tomorrow, we explore more of this ancient landscape, walking in the footsteps of those who came before us, and creating our own stories along the way.
