A Day of Serene Discoveries

Today was a day of embracing the unexpected on Naoshima. We ventured beyond the famed museums and installations to uncover the island's more subtle charms. It was a blend of artistic appreciation, a touch of adventure, and a deep dive into the local culture, creating memories that I know our family will cherish for years to come.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at APRON CAFE in Honmura. The cafe was easy to find, with a neatly written sign. The simple furniture and warm smiles made it feel like we were visiting an old friend. Olivia and I enjoyed a set lunch menu with fried fish while Thando opted for the spicy curry. The food was fresh and delicious, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to fuel up for the day's adventures. This cafe is known for using locally sourced ingredients from the Setouchi region, and the menu is designed by a certified nutritionist.

After breakfast, we made our way to the Naoshima Fishing Park. I must admit, I hadn't been fishing in years, not since my childhood days back in Kimberley. Thando was especially excited, his eyes wide with anticipation. The park offered a picturesque setting, with clear blue waters and gentle sea breeze. We rented a fishing rod and bought some bait, and Thando was thrilled when the staff showed him how to attach the bait. While we didn't catch anything significant – a few nibbles here and there – the experience was more about spending quality time together and enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings. It was a reminder that sometimes the simplest activities can create the most lasting memories.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.

Next on our itinerary was the Seaside Gallery. Designed by the renowned architect Tadao Ando, the gallery itself is a work of art. Its long, narrow structure is built into a terraced plaza, offering stunning views of the Seto Inland Sea. The natural light that flooded the interior created an ethereal ambiance, enhancing the artworks on display. The gallery is located near Benesse House Museum. As we strolled through the exhibits, I found myself contemplating the relationship between art and nature, and how Ando's architecture seamlessly integrates the two. Olivia was particularly taken with the thematic artworks reflecting the beauty of Seto Inland Sea. Thando, on the other hand, was fascinated by the building's design, running his hands along the smooth concrete walls.

For lunch, we decided to try Ishii Shouten, a local udon shop. This rustic eatery is known for its simple yet delicious udon noodles. We all ordered the kitsune udon, which came with flavorful tofu pockets in a savory broth. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the broth was incredibly comforting. The owner was very friendly, which made the experience even more enjoyable. It was a satisfying and authentic taste of Naoshima.

In the late afternoon, we ventured to the Honmura Lounge & Archive. Housed in a renovated agricultural cooperative supermarket, this space serves as an information center for the Art House Project. We purchased tickets for tomorrow's exploration of the Art House Project and took some time to browse the exhibits and learn more about the artists involved. The lounge also offered a selection of local crafts and souvenirs, and we picked up a few small gifts for friends back home. It's designed by architect Ryue Nishizawa. It was interesting to learn about the history of the buildings and the stories behind the art.

As the day drew to a close, we treated ourselves to dinner at Nagomi, a restaurant recommended by several locals. This cozy establishment offered a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the menu featured a variety of Japanese dishes. We shared a selection of small plates, including fresh sashimi, grilled fish, and vegetable tempura. The flavors were exquisite, and the presentation was impeccable. It was the perfect way to end our day of exploration and discovery.

Reflecting on the day, I realized that Naoshima is more than just its famous art museums. It's a place where art, nature, and local culture intertwine to create a unique and enriching experience. From the thrill of fishing to the serenity of the Seaside Gallery and the warmth of the local eateries, every moment was a reminder of the beauty and simplicity of island life. As we prepare for our final day on Naoshima, I'm filled with a sense of gratitude for the memories we've created and the experiences we've shared. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Honmura Lounge & Archive in more detail, revisit the Walking Ark, and do some shopping at Shimacoya. I'm eager to see what other hidden gems this enchanting island has in store for us. It is also worth mentioning that Naoshima is one of the Seto Inland Sea islands and a national park. It was neglected for years until the cultural foundation of publishing company Benesse decided to start revitalising the island communities by creating art and architectural projects. I am glad that we chose to visit the island and experience its art and culture.

Back at My Lodge Naoshima, Thando was already fast asleep, dreaming of the fish he almost caught. Olivia and I sat on the porch, sipping tea and recounting our favorite moments of the day. It's moments like these that make traveling as a family so special. As I looked out at the starry sky, I couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to share these experiences with my loved ones. Naoshima, you've captured our hearts with your art, your nature, and your warm hospitality. We'll carry these memories with us long after we've left your shores.
