Whispers of Old Kyoto

Today was a day of wandering through the very heart of Kyoto's history, a journey that felt like stepping back in time. I traded the familiar brewery tours of Kelowna for ancient temples and cobblestone streets, and the experience was nothing short of magical. It's funny how travel can pull you so far from your everyday life, yet make you feel more connected to the world.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. I know, pizza in Japan sounds a bit odd, but I was craving something familiar. It was a delightful surprise – a small, cozy place with a stone oven, crafting pizzas that rivaled some of the best I’ve had back home. I even chatted with the owner for a bit, who was incredibly friendly and spoke excellent English. Fuelled up and ready, I set off to explore the eastern hills of Kyoto.

The first stop was Kiyomizu-dera, a temple that has stood for over 1200 years. Founded in 778, it's a place where the deity Kannon's compassion is said to prevail. As I approached, the iconic vermilion Niomon Gate stood majestically, flanked by guardian statues. The sheer scale of the temple complex was breathtaking, especially knowing that much of it was rebuilt in the 17th century after a fire. The main hall, a National Treasure, houses a statue of the eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon, though it's only shown to the public every 33 years – perhaps I'll have to plan another trip! The craftsmanship and the spiritual atmosphere were palpable, even amidst the throng of tourists.

The wooden stage jutting out from the main hall offered a panoramic view of Kyoto, a sea of rooftops blending into the distant hills. Even in early March, there was a hint of spring in the air, promising the vibrant colors to come. I took a moment to soak it all in, the cool breeze on my face and the weight of history all around me. I even braved a walk through the pitch-black basement of the Zuigudo Hall, dedicated to Buddha's mother, a symbolic journey through a mother's womb. It was a bit unnerving, but also strangely peaceful.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its temples, but in the journey between them, in the quiet moments of discovery along ancient paths.

After Kiyomizu-dera, I wandered down to Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka, two gently sloping, narrow roads lined with traditional wooden storefronts. These streets, whose names translate to “Three-Year Hill” and “Two-Year Hill,” are said to date back to Kyoto's early imperial history. The atmosphere was enchanting, like stepping onto a movie set. Shops sold everything from incense and chopsticks to fans and sweets, all handcrafted with exquisite detail. I couldn't resist picking up a few souvenirs for Olivia and Ethan – a delicate tea set for her and a quirky Daruma doll for him.

The streets were bustling with people, many dressed in kimonos, adding to the timeless charm. It was easy to imagine what Kyoto might have looked like centuries ago, before modernization swept through. According to local legend, if you fall on Sannenzaka, you'll die in three years, and on Ninenzaka, in two. I made sure to watch my step, though I suspect it's just a tale to keep tourists on their toes!

Lunch was a delicious affair at Katsukura - Kyoto Porta. It wasn't traditional Kyoto cuisine, but I wanted something satisfying and filling. I opted for the tonkatsu set, and it was superb. The pork cutlet was perfectly crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside, and the miso soup was hearty and flavorful. They even let you grind your own sesame seeds for the sauce, which was a nice touch. With bottomless rice, soup and cabbage, it was a great value.

As evening approached, I found myself drawn to Gion, Kyoto's geisha district. I strolled along the narrow streets, hoping to catch a glimpse of a geiko or maiko, but no luck. I did, however, stumble upon The Common One Bar Kyoto, a modern bar hidden away in a traditional machiya building. Intrigued, I stepped inside.

The bar was a beautiful blend of old and new, with tatami rooms and a tea room creating a serene atmosphere. The bartender was a true craftsman, meticulously preparing each cocktail with precision and care. I ordered a brandy-based cocktail, and it was exquisite – the aroma of the brandy perfectly balanced with the refreshing flavors of the fruit. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring, sipping a expertly crafted drink in a tranquil setting.

Reflecting on the day, I felt a deep appreciation for Kyoto's ability to preserve its history while embracing modernity. It's a city that invites you to slow down, to wander, and to discover hidden gems around every corner. I'm already looking forward to tomorrow, when I'll be visiting Fushimi Inari Taisha, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates, and Tofuku-ji Temple, known for its stunning Zen gardens. I might even try to spot a geisha in Gion again, but regardless, I know it will be another day filled with unforgettable experiences.

As I head back to Hotel Gion Misen, I'm filled with anticipation for what tomorrow holds. Perhaps I'll even find time to pick up that umbrella and sunscreen I forgot – the weather forecast is looking a bit unpredictable.
