Island Explorations: Parks, Villages, and Yaeyama Cuisine

Another day, another adventure on Ishigaki Island! Today was all about immersing ourselves in the local culture and natural beauty of this stunning island. With Olivia and Ethan in tow, I knew we were in for a treat, and Ishigaki didn't disappoint. We explored a sprawling park, stepped back in time in a recreated village, and indulged in some delicious local cuisine.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at SALTIDA. The buffet was impressive, offering a mix of Okinawan, Japanese, and Mediterranean dishes. Ethan, predictably, went straight for the non-Japanese options, while Olivia and I sampled some of the local specialties. I must admit, I am a big fan of trying the local cuisine wherever we go, and SALTIDA offered a great introduction to the flavors of Ishigaki.

Fuelled up and ready to go, our first stop was Banna Park. This place is massive! I had read that Banna Park is a sprawling nature park named after the 230-meter-high Mt. Banna. It’s divided into several zones, each offering something unique. We drove up to the Banna Skyline, stopping at a few of the observation decks to take in the panoramic views of the island. The Emerald Sea Viewing Platform was particularly stunning, offering a clear view of the ocean.

Ethan, of course, was more interested in the Fureai Children's Square, with its giant slide. Olivia and I enjoyed the Nature Observation Square, where we spotted some local flora and fauna. I even managed to snap a few photos of a crested serpent eagle soaring over Nagura Bay – a real treat for a keen photographer like myself. I was impressed by the sheer size of the park; you could easily spend a whole day exploring all its nooks and crannies. It’s a great spot for families, nature lovers, and anyone looking for a bit of peace and quiet away from the beaches.

Sometimes, the best way to appreciate a place is to simply wander, letting its natural beauty and cultural charm unfold before you.

After a morning of exploring Banna Park, we were ready for some lunch. We headed to Pizzeria il Trecorde, a highly-recommended spot for authentic Neapolitan pizza. And authentic it was! The aroma of wood-fired pizza filled the air as we walked in. The chef was busy tossing dough and arranging toppings, and I could tell we were in for a treat. We ordered a couple of pizzas to share – a classic Margherita and one with local Ishigaki ingredients. The crust was perfectly charred, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. Ethan, surprisingly, devoured his fair share, declaring it the best pizza he’d had in Japan. Olivia and I agreed; it was a delicious taste of Italy in the heart of Ishigaki.

With our bellies full of pizza, we set off to explore Ishigaki Yaima Village. This charming theme park recreates a traditional Okinawan village, with well-preserved houses and a serene atmosphere. As we wandered through the village, we felt like we had stepped back in time. The traditional houses, some of which are over 100 years old, offered a glimpse into the island's past. We even tried on some Ryukyu kimonos and painted our own shisha figurines – a fun and cultural experience for the whole family.

One of the highlights of Yaima Village was the squirrel monkey garden. These adorable little creatures were incredibly friendly, climbing on people and posing for photos. Ethan was in his element, laughing and playing with the monkeys. Olivia, who’s usually not a fan of animals, even cracked a smile. It was a heartwarming experience that we all enjoyed. The village also features folk music and dance performances, adding to the cultural immersion. Although the singing show was only in Japanese, we still enjoyed the music and the vibrant atmosphere.

Before heading back to our guesthouse, we made a quick stop at Mirumiru Honpo Main Store. This gelato shop is famous for its delicious ice cream made with fresh milk from its own farm. The views from the shop, overlooking Nagura Bay, were simply breathtaking. We tried a few different flavors – sweet potato, brown sugar, and salt – all of which were delicious. Ethan, of course, opted for a double scoop of chocolate. I also couldn’t resist trying their signature Mirumiru burger, and I must say, it was surprisingly good. The juicy patty and soft bun were a perfect combination, and the gelato that came with it was the perfect ending to a satisfying meal.

As the sun began to set, we drove back to our guesthouse, tired but happy. Today had been a perfect blend of culture and nature, showcasing the best of what Ishigaki Island has to offer. We had explored a sprawling park, stepped back in time in a recreated village, and indulged in some delicious local cuisine. What more could you ask for? It reminded me a bit of some of the day trips Olivia and I used to take in Cornwall back in the UK, just with a tropical twist.

Tomorrow, we're planning to hit Fusaki Beach for some relaxation and maybe a bit of snorkeling, followed by a visit to the Toujin Tomb. And I might just sneak off to THE STAR BAR for a cheeky pint in the evening. Until then, cheers from Ishigaki!

P.S. I almost forgot! I managed to misplace my sunglasses somewhere today. Note to self: remember to keep better track of my belongings!
