James's Solo Exploration of Lisbon
Day 3: A Lisbon Daydream: History, Heights, and Heavenly Flavors
Exploring Lisbon's heart: from grand plazas to ancient ruins and Michelin-starred dining, a solo traveler's immersive journey.
Lisbon's Embrace
Today was a symphony of Lisbon experiences, a blend of historical grandeur, architectural marvels, and culinary delights. As a solo traveler, I relished the freedom to wander at my own pace, soaking in the city's unique atmosphere. From bustling squares to serene ruins and ending with a Michelin-starred experience, Lisbon truly captivated my senses.
My day began with a hearty American breakfast at the Hard Rock Cafe | Lisboa. I know, it seems odd to start my day in Portugal with such a recognizable American brand, but I was craving something familiar and filling. I opted for one of their Legendary Burgers, savoring each bite amidst the rock 'n' roll memorabilia. It was just the fuel I needed for the day ahead.
With a full stomach, I set off to Praça do Comércio, a grand square that opens up to the Tagus River. Even in February, the square was alive with activity. I saw snippets of what might be preparations for the Lisbon Carnival, scheduled to start in March. The sheer scale of the place is impressive, a testament to Lisbon's rich history as a trading hub. I imagined ships arriving from distant lands, laden with spices and treasures. The open space and the view of the river were incredibly calming, a perfect spot to simply be present.

The beauty of travel lies not just in seeing new places, but in experiencing them in ways that resonate with your soul.
Next on the list was the Santa Justa Lift, an ironwork elevator that connects the lower Baixa district with the higher Carmo Square. Designed by Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, a student of Gustave Eiffel, the lift is a stunning example of neo-Gothic architecture. The queue was a bit long, but it gave me a chance to admire the intricate details of the structure. When I finally reached the top, the panoramic views of Lisbon were breathtaking. The terracotta rooftops, the São Jorge Castle perched on a hilltop, and the vast expanse of the Tagus River – it was all laid out before me. I took my time to soak it all in, capturing photos and mental snapshots of this incredible vista.

From the top of the lift, it was a short walk to the Carmo Convent, a poignant reminder of the devastating 1755 earthquake. The ruins of the convent stand as a testament to Lisbon's resilience. Walking through the roofless nave, I could almost hear the echoes of prayers and hymns. The skeletal arches reaching towards the sky created a sense of both loss and hope. Inside, the Carmo Archaeological Museum houses a fascinating collection of artifacts, from prehistoric tools to medieval tombs. It was a somber yet enriching experience, a reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring power of the human spirit.

As evening approached, I decided to indulge in a traditional Portuguese lunch at Lisbon Tu e Eu. Tucked away in the Alfama district, this charming restaurant offered an authentic culinary experience. I ordered the garlic shrimp which came highly recommended. The flavors were bold and comforting. The cozy atmosphere and friendly service made me feel like a local. It was the perfect midday respite before my final adventure of the day.

The grand finale of my day was dinner at Belcanto, a two-Michelin-starred restaurant helmed by Chef José Avillez. This was a splurge, but I wanted to experience the pinnacle of Portuguese gastronomy. The restaurant's ambiance was elegant and refined, yet surprisingly relaxed. I opted for the tasting menu, a journey through Chef Avillez's culinary creations. Each dish was a work of art, a symphony of flavors and textures that delighted my palate. From innovative interpretations of traditional Portuguese ingredients to daring culinary experiments, it was an unforgettable dining experience. The attentive and discreet service added to the overall sense of luxury and indulgence. It was the perfect way to cap off a day of exploration and discovery.

After dinner, I decided to check out Lisboa Bar for a nightcap. This cozy bar was a great spot to wind down after a long day of sightseeing. I enjoyed a glass of local wine while chatting with some locals, sharing stories and laughter. It was a reminder that travel is not just about seeing places, but also about connecting with people.

As I drifted off to sleep, I dreamt of grand plazas, ancient ruins, and the exquisite flavors of Belcanto. Tomorrow, I plan to visit the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum and Parque Eduardo VII, eager to uncover more of Lisbon's hidden gems. Lena and Sophia would have loved this city!
