A Lisbon Farewell

As my final day in Lisbon drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a tinge of sadness mixed with immense gratitude. This solo journey had been nothing short of transformative, filled with unexpected discoveries and a deeper connection to a city that effortlessly blends history with contemporary flair. Today was all about soaking in the last drops of Lisbon's vibrant spirit before heading back to Berlin.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Cervejaria Ramiro. Now, I know what you might be thinking: seafood for breakfast? But trust me, this place is a Lisbon institution, and starting the day with their famous shrimp and a cold beer felt like the perfect send-off. The atmosphere was buzzing with locals and tourists alike, all eager to indulge in the freshest catches of the day. It was a bit chaotic, but in the best possible way, a true reflection of Lisbon's lively energy.

From there, I ventured to LX Factory, a place I'd heard so much about. Situated beneath the 25 de Abril Bridge, this former industrial complex has been transformed into a hub of creativity, housing an array of boutiques, cafes, and art installations. It was a feast for the eyes, with every corner offering something unique and inspiring. I spent hours wandering through the various shops, admiring the work of local designers and artists. There was this really cool shop that had a workshop, gallery and store, Oficina Marques, and it felt like stepping into the minds of its founders, Gezo Marques and José Aparício Gonçalves. Since 2018, they've transformed reclaimed and raw materials into bold creations that reflect their fascination with the sea, wilderness, body, faith and Lisboa. Wooden panels, ceramics and assemblages filled the space, each shaped with a mix of materials. I picked up a few souvenirs for Lena and Sophia, hoping to bring back a piece of Lisbon's artistic soul to Berlin.

The journey matters more than the destination, but sometimes, the destination leaves an indelible mark on your soul.

Lunch was at Zé da Mouraria, a traditional Portuguese eatery tucked away in the historic Mouraria district. This place is known for its authentic cuisine and generous portions, and it certainly didn't disappoint. I ordered the *bacalhau*, a classic codfish dish, which came served with chickpeas and potatoes. It was simple, hearty, and bursting with flavor, a true taste of Portugal. The restaurant was bustling with locals, and I felt a sense of belonging as I savored each bite, surrounded by the sounds of Portuguese chatter.

In the afternoon, I made my way to MAAT – the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology. The building itself is a stunning piece of modern architecture, designed by Amanda Levete Architects, and its waterfront location offers breathtaking views of the Tagus River. I spent a few hours exploring the various exhibitions, which showcased a diverse range of contemporary art and innovative designs. The museum's focus on the intersection of art, architecture, and technology resonated deeply with me, sparking new ideas and perspectives. I even found myself contemplating how Lena, with her architect's eye, would interpret the building's design and the exhibits within. It's a shame she and Sophia couldn't be here to experience it with me.

Before dinner, I did a bit of shopping at Lisbon Shop, searching for some last-minute souvenirs and gifts. It was fun browsing through the local crafts and products, trying to find something that captured the essence of Lisbon. The shop was filled with unique items, from hand-painted tiles to traditional Portuguese delicacies, making it a treasure trove of cultural souvenirs.

As the sun began to set, I headed to Sacramento do Chiado for my final Lisbon dinner. This elegant restaurant, located in the heart of the Chiado district, offers a sophisticated dining experience with a focus on traditional Portuguese cuisine. I indulged in their famous trilogy of codfish, a culinary masterpiece that showcased the versatility of this beloved ingredient. The ambiance was romantic and refined, providing the perfect setting for a memorable last meal. I savored each bite, reflecting on the incredible experiences I'd had throughout the week. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and the service was prompt. Sacramento do Chiado is located in the heart of Lisbon and can be challenging to find parking. The restaurant's standout feature is its outdoor seating area, which provides a breathtaking view of the city.

To cap off the evening, I decided to check out Rive Rouge, a bar known for its lively atmosphere and creative cocktails. I sipped on a expertly crafted drink, soaking in the vibrant energy of Lisbon's nightlife. The bar was buzzing with locals and tourists, all enjoying the music and the company. It was the perfect way to say goodbye to this incredible city.

Looking back on my solo adventure, I realize that Lisbon has left an indelible mark on my soul. The city's rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality have captivated me in ways I never expected. From exploring ancient castles to indulging in culinary delights, every moment has been a gift. And while I missed Lena and Sophia dearly, this solo journey has allowed me to reconnect with myself, to rediscover my passions, and to gain a newfound appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the world. I am already looking forward to returning with my family, to share the magic of Lisbon with them and create new memories together.

As I prepare to board my flight back to Berlin, I carry with me a piece of Lisbon in my heart. The memories, the experiences, and the friendships I've made will stay with me forever. Until next time, *Lisboa*, thank you for an unforgettable journey.

Thinking about what’s next, back in Berlin, I’m keen to continue exploring local spots with Lena and Sophia. Perhaps we’ll try that new craft brewery in Prenzlauer Berg or finally visit the East Side Gallery. For now, though, I’m content with the memories of Lisbon, a city that has truly captured my heart.

And with that, my Lisbon adventure comes to a close. It's been an incredible journey, and I can't wait to share more of my travels with you all soon!

Reflecting on the Journey

As the plane soared above Lisbon, heading back to Berlin, I couldn’t help but smile, thinking about the incredible experiences of the past week. This solo trip was exactly what I needed – a chance to recharge, explore a new city, and reconnect with myself. Lisbon, with its charming streets, delicious food, and vibrant culture, had exceeded all my expectations. It’s a city that effortlessly blends the old and the new, offering something for every traveler.

One of the highlights of my trip was undoubtedly the food. From the fresh seafood at Cervejaria Ramiro to the traditional *bacalhau* at Zé da Mouraria, every meal was a culinary adventure. I also loved discovering the local pastries, especially the *pastéis de nata*, those creamy custard tarts that are simply irresistible. And let’s not forget the wine – Portugal is a wine lover’s paradise, with a wide variety of reds, whites, and rosés to choose from.

But Lisbon is more than just its food and wine. It’s a city with a rich history, evident in its ancient castles, ornate churches, and historic neighborhoods. I enjoyed wandering through the Alfama district, getting lost in its narrow streets and soaking in the atmosphere. I also visited the Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is a testament to Portugal’s maritime past.

Of course, no trip to Lisbon would be complete without a ride on Tram 28, the iconic yellow tram that winds its way through the city’s hills. It’s a bit touristy, but it’s also a great way to see the sights and get a feel for the city.

Now, as I head back to Berlin, I’m already planning my next adventure. Who knows where I’ll go next? But one thing is for sure – I’ll always cherish my memories of Lisbon, a city that has captured my heart and sparked my wanderlust. Until next time, *adeus*!
