Finding Peace in Takamatsu's Treasures

Today was a delightful immersion into the heart of Takamatsu, blending serene natural beauty with the lively pulse of the city. I started my day with a wander through one of Japan's most celebrated gardens and ended it with a taste of local nightlife. It's amazing how much you can pack into a single day when you're on your own adventure.

My day began with an early start at the stunning Ritsurin Garden. As someone who appreciates a good landscape, especially with my photography hobby, I was eager to see if it lived up to the hype. Let me tell you, it exceeded all expectations. The garden, a Special Place of Scenic Beauty, is meticulously crafted with six ponds and thirteen artificial hills, all set against the backdrop of Mt. Shiun. The Matsudaira lords of Takamatsu created this garden, and their artistry is evident in every corner.

Wandering through Ritsurin Garden felt like stepping into a series of perfectly framed photographs. Each turn revealed a new vista, a different perspective, making it a photographer's dream. The sunlight filtering through the ancient pines created dappled patterns on the mossy ground, and the air was filled with the gentle sound of water trickling through carefully placed stones. I spent a good couple of hours simply wandering, taking photos, and soaking it all in. It was incredibly peaceful, a world away from the bustling city just beyond its walls.

The beauty of Ritsurin Garden lies not just in its picturesque landscapes, but in its ability to transport you to a realm of tranquility and timeless elegance.

After my tranquil morning, I decided to delve into the local culture with a visit to Shikoku Village. It's an open-air museum showcasing traditional buildings from around Shikoku Island. Getting there was easy enough by local train. The village offered a fascinating glimpse into the region's architectural heritage, with beautifully preserved farmhouses, workshops, and even a traditional kabuki theater. I spent a couple of hours exploring the different buildings, imagining what life must have been like in these homes and workplaces generations ago. There was even a Setouchi Work Songs & Shikoku Folktale Opera event taking place, adding a vibrant layer to the historical setting.

Lunch was at Tataki Kobo, a restaurant I'd read about that specializes in *katsuo tataki*, seared skipjack tuna. As a brewery tour guide, I appreciate the art of food and drink pairing, and I was curious to see how this local delicacy would measure up. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly, explaining the different ways to enjoy the *tataki*. I opted for the classic preparation with ginger and soy sauce, and it was absolutely divine. The tuna was perfectly seared, with a smoky flavor that complemented the fresh ginger and tangy soy sauce. It paired perfectly with a local craft beer, a hoppy IPA that cut through the richness of the fish. I savored every bite, feeling grateful for the opportunity to experience such a unique and delicious dish.

With my appetite sated and my curiosity piqued, I headed to Takamatsu Central Shopping Street for an afternoon of retail therapy. This covered arcade is a shopper's paradise, stretching for blocks and filled with a mix of traditional shops, modern boutiques, and department stores. It was a far cry from the serene gardens I'd visited earlier, but I found myself enjoying the lively atmosphere and the sheer variety of goods on offer. I picked up a few souvenirs for Olivia and Ethan, a traditional *yukata* for her and a quirky anime figure for him. I also couldn't resist treating myself to a new lens for my camera, something I'd been eyeing for a while.

As evening approached, I decided to try some local craft beer. I found a recommendation for Munagin, a restaurant known for its local cuisine and extensive drink list. The place had a lively, welcoming atmosphere, and I quickly struck up a conversation with a couple of locals at the bar. They recommended a few different dishes, including the *sanuki udon*, which I knew was a must-try in this region. I ordered a bowl, along with a selection of local craft beers. The *udon* was simple but incredibly satisfying, the noodles perfectly chewy and the broth rich and flavorful. The beers were equally impressive, showcasing the creativity and passion of local brewers. I spent the rest of the evening chatting with my new friends, sharing stories, and sampling different beers. It was the perfect end to a perfect day, a reminder of the simple joys of travel and the connections we can make with people from all walks of life.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I grabbed a quick *okonomiyaki* from a street vendor. I'd spotted the stall earlier in the day and the savory pancake smelled too good to pass up. It was the perfect late-night snack, a delicious and satisfying end to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Tomorrow, I'm off to Kochi to see Kochi Castle and the Sunday Market. I'm looking forward to another day of adventure, exploring new sights, and discovering new flavors. Shikoku has already captured my heart, and I can't wait to see what else it has in store. Good night from Takamatsu!

Before I drift off, I thought I'd jot down a few thoughts about today's food adventures. Lunch at Tataki Kobo was a revelation. The seared skipjack tuna was an absolute delight, perfectly complemented by the ginger and soy sauce. It's a dish I'll definitely be trying to recreate back home in Kelowna, though I doubt I'll be able to find tuna quite as fresh. Then there was the *sanuki udon* at Munagin. I've had *udon* before, but nothing quite like this. The noodles were so chewy and the broth so flavorful, it was a truly memorable culinary experience. And of course, the *okonomiyaki* from the street vendor. Savory, satisfying, and the perfect end to a long day. It was a reminder that some of the best food experiences can be found in the most unexpected places.

I can't wait to see what culinary delights tomorrow brings. Kochi is known for its fresh seafood, so I'm hoping to sample some local specialties. I've also heard that Kochi Castle has a great view of the city, so I'm looking forward to taking some photos. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge for another day of adventure.
