Solo Exploration of Shikoku Island: Culture, Nature, and Craft Beer
Day 1: Whirlwinds and Culinary Wonders: My First Day on Shikoku Island
Embark on a captivating journey through Shikoku Island, Japan, exploring Naruto's whirlpools, local cuisine, and hidden gems on day one.
First Impressions: Shikoku Island Beckons
After a long journey from Kelowna, involving a flight to Tokyo and then a connecting flight to Shikoku, I finally arrived, eager to explore this beautiful island. The air was fresh, carrying a hint of the sea, and the vibrant greenery was a welcome change from the urban sprawl I'd just left behind. My solo adventure had begun, and I couldn't wait to see what Shikoku had in store for me.
My first day was all about diving headfirst into what makes this part of Japan so unique. I was particularly excited about seeing the Naruto Whirlpools, a natural phenomenon I'd only ever read about. After grabbing a quick bite at Hattorikun for breakfast, it was time to head towards Naruto Park, where the whirlpools awaited.

Chasing the Naruto Whirlpools
The Naruto Strait is a narrow channel between Shikoku and Awaji Island where the Seto Inland Sea meets the Pacific Ocean. This clash of water creates some of the largest and most dramatic whirlpools in the world. I made my way to the Tokushima Prefectural Uzu-no-Michi Walkway, a pedestrian path built under the Onaruto Bridge. Walking along this 450-meter walkway, suspended 45 meters above the sea, was an experience in itself.

The views from the walkway were absolutely stunning. Through sturdy glass floor panels, I watched as the whirlpools formed and dissipated with incredible power. The swirling water was mesmerizing, a constant dance of nature's forces. I could feel the salty breeze on my face and hear the roar of the water below. It was truly a breathtaking sight, and I spent a good hour just watching the eddies come and go.
Witnessing the Naruto Whirlpools is like watching the earth breathe – a powerful, awe-inspiring display of nature's raw energy.
After experiencing the whirlpools from above, I decided to explore Naruto Park, which surrounds the area. The park offers walking trails and viewpoints, providing different perspectives of the whirlpools and the Onaruto Bridge. I strolled along the paths, enjoying the scenery and the fresh air. I even considered taking a sightseeing boat tour to get closer to the action, but the Uzu-no-Michi Walkway had already provided such a fantastic vantage point.
A Taste of Tokushima: Local Flavors
By lunchtime, I was ready to sample some local cuisine. I headed to Restaurant Obokekyo Mannaka, known for its traditional Japanese dishes. The restaurant was nestled in a scenic spot, offering beautiful views of the surrounding landscape. I opted for a set meal featuring local specialties, including fresh seafood and mountain vegetables. The flavors were delicate and refined, showcasing the region's culinary heritage. It was a satisfying and authentic dining experience.

Evening Reflections and Local Brews
As the day drew to a close, I found myself seeking out a local watering hole. Remembering my mission to explore the craft beer scene, I ventured into Beer Wine and Ate Mangetsu, a cozy bar in Tokushima. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and I struck up a conversation with the owner, who was passionate about local brews.

I sampled a few different beers, each with its unique character and flavor profile. It was fascinating to learn about the brewing process and the local ingredients that went into each pint. As a brewery tour guide myself, I always find it interesting to see how different regions approach the craft beer scene. This little bar was a gem, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there.
Dinner was at Yuzuan Restaurant, where I decided to try some of their sushi and shabu-shabu. The quality of the ingredients was outstanding, and the meal was a perfect way to end my first day on Shikoku Island. I was particularly impressed with the freshness of the seafood, which was a testament to the region's coastal location.

Tomorrow's Adventures Await
As I settle in for the night, I'm already looking forward to tomorrow's adventures. My itinerary includes a visit to Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu, a stunning example of traditional Japanese landscape design. I also plan to explore Shikoku Village, an open-air museum showcasing historic buildings from around the island. I'm eager to immerse myself further in the local culture and continue discovering the hidden gems of Shikoku. I'll be having breakfast at Okamura, lunch at Tataki Kobo, and dinner at Munagin. I also plan on visiting Takamatsu Central Shopping Street.
Shikoku Island has already captured my heart. The natural beauty, the delicious food, and the warm hospitality of the locals have made this a truly unforgettable experience. I'm excited to see what the rest of my solo journey has in store. I am a little worried that I forgot my sunscreen and portable phone charger at home in Kelowna, but I will manage.
