First Day Wonders in Serra do Montemuro
After months of planning and anticipation, our adventure in Serra do Montemuro has officially begun! Leaving behind the familiar streets of Berlin, I, along with my friends, embarked on a journey to explore this relatively unknown, but stunning, region of Portugal. The promise of dramatic landscapes, quaint villages, and authentic Portuguese culture was too alluring to resist. As a software developer, I often find myself immersed in the digital world, so escaping to nature is a welcome change. With Lena's encouragement, I've been trying to embrace these moments more fully, and I'm excited to share this experience with all of you.

The flight from Berlin to Porto was smooth, and the rental car pick-up was surprisingly hassle-free. Soon, we were driving towards Serra do Montemuro, the anticipation building with every kilometer. The landscape transformed from urban sprawl to rolling hills and verdant forests, signaling our arrival in this natural paradise. We still need to buy insect repellent and a portable phone charger, as we forgot to bring them with us.
Our first stop was the charming village of Ester, where we planned to have breakfast at Estrela da Serra. The drive itself was an experience, with winding roads offering glimpses of the dramatic scenery that awaited us. The restaurant exuded a cozy, traditional atmosphere, exactly what I had hoped for. We settled in, eager to try some authentic Portuguese breakfast fare. I opted for a strong coffee and a local pastry, while my friends chose a variety of savory options. The food was delicious, and the friendly service made us feel instantly welcome. It was the perfect start to our adventure.

Fueled and ready, we set off to explore the Serra de Montemuro itself. The mountain range is part of the Arouca Geopark, and I was eager to see the landscapes I had read so much about. We decided to take one of the marked trails, a relatively easy one to ease us into the hiking experience. The air was crisp and clean, a stark contrast to the city air I'm accustomed to. As we ascended, the views became increasingly spectacular. The rolling hills stretched out before us, dotted with traditional villages and terraced vineyards. The landscape was a patchwork of greens and browns, a testament to the region's agricultural heritage.
The beauty of Serra do Montemuro lies not only in its landscapes but also in its ability to transport you to a simpler, more authentic way of life.
I couldn't resist pulling out my camera to capture the stunning vistas. Photography is a passion of mine, and I knew I would have ample opportunities to indulge it here. The light was perfect, casting long shadows across the hills and creating a dramatic effect. I experimented with different angles and compositions, trying to capture the essence of this remarkable place. Lena, ever the artist, offered her creative input, suggesting different perspectives and focusing on the details that I might have missed. Her eye for design always adds a unique dimension to my photography.
As we hiked, we came across several locals tending to their fields or herding sheep. They greeted us with warm smiles and friendly nods, a testament to the region's welcoming culture. I tried my best to communicate in Portuguese, but my language skills are still a work in progress. Thankfully, a few of my friends are more fluent, and they were able to engage in brief conversations with the locals. It's these small interactions that often make a trip truly memorable.
Our next destination was the Miradouro Vale do Bestança, a viewpoint offering panoramic views of the Bestança Valley. The drive to the viewpoint was as scenic as the hike, with winding roads and hairpin turns that tested my driving skills. The Bestança River is known as one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. Upon arriving at the miradouro, we were greeted by a sight that took our breath away. The valley stretched out before us, a tapestry of green fields, dense forests, and the shimmering Bestança River snaking its way through the landscape. The views from the Miradouro Vale do Bestança were simply stunning, offering a sweeping panorama of the valley below.

I spent a good hour simply soaking in the view, trying to etch it into my memory. The scale of the landscape was immense, and I felt a sense of awe and wonder that I rarely experience in my daily life. It was a humbling reminder of the power and beauty of nature. We took numerous photos, trying to capture the essence of the valley, but I knew that no image could truly do it justice. It was a sight that had to be experienced firsthand.
As the day wore on, we began to make our way back towards our campsite. Before heading back to the campsite, we stopped at Bar Canastro, a local establishment known for its friendly atmosphere and refreshing drinks. We ordered a round of local beers and toasted to our first day in Serra do Montemuro. The bar was filled with locals, and we felt a sense of camaraderie as we shared stories and laughter. It was a perfect way to end a perfect day.

For dinner, we decided to try Sabores De Montemuro, drawn in by its reputation for traditional Portuguese cuisine and hearty steaks. The restaurant was warm and inviting, and the aroma of grilled meats filled the air. I ordered a steak, cooked to perfection and seasoned with local herbs. My friends opted for a variety of traditional dishes, including cozido à portuguesa, a hearty stew with a mix of meats and vegetables. The food was delicious, and the portions were generous. We left feeling full and content, ready for a good night's sleep under the stars.
