Arrifana's Majesty and Cercal's Charm

Today was a day of contrasts, from the dramatic cliffs of Praia da Arrifana to the rolling hills of Cercal. It's days like these that remind me why I love solo travel – the freedom to explore at my own pace, to linger where my heart desires, and to fully immerse myself in the beauty of the moment. The Rota Vicentina continues to surprise and delight, offering a blend of stunning landscapes and authentic Portuguese culture.

My day began with the promise of coastal vistas and the invigorating scent of the Atlantic. After a restful night, I was eager to explore Praia da Arrifana, a beach nestled between towering cliffs that I’d heard so much about. The weather in Arrifana in June is generally pleasant, with temperatures averaging around 19°C. I was hoping for sunshine, but even with the partly cloudy sky, the landscape was breathtaking.

Breakfast at Naperon

Before heading to the beach, though, I needed breakfast. Naperon in Odeceixe was the perfect spot. Although Naperon doesn't have a vegetarian menu, I was able to enjoy a hearty breakfast. I savored the fresh bread and local jam, fueling up for the day's adventures. The restaurant itself is charming, tucked away in one of the village's traditional houses.

Exploring Praia da Arrifana

With a full stomach, I drove to Praia da Arrifana. The descent to the beach is steep, but the views along the way are worth it. As I reached the bottom, the sheer scale of the cliffs surrounding the beach was awe-inspiring. The waves crashed against the shore, creating a symphony of sound that was both calming and exhilarating. I spent a couple of hours walking along the beach, taking photos, and simply breathing in the fresh sea air.

The beach is known for its surfing, and I watched as surfers expertly rode the waves. Kalux Beach Bar & Surf School is right there, offering lessons for all levels. I was tempted to give it a try, but decided to stick to hiking for now. Maybe I'll try to surf another time. I did enjoy a refreshing drink at the bar, soaking in the laid-back atmosphere.

The beauty of the Rota Vicentina lies not just in its stunning landscapes, but in the simple moments of connection with nature and the local culture.

Journey to Serra do Cercal

Leaving the coast behind, I drove inland towards Serra do Cercal. The landscape transformed from rugged cliffs to rolling hills covered in cork oak forests. The drive itself was scenic, with glimpses of small farms and vineyards along the way.

Serra do Cercal is a mountain range that offers a different kind of beauty. It’s a place of tranquility, where the air is filled with the scent of eucalyptus and wildflowers. I parked the car and set off on one of the many hiking trails. The trails are well-marked, and I chose a moderate loop that took me through forests and over hills, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

I enjoyed the solitude of the hike, the only sounds being the rustling of leaves and the occasional birdsong. It was a welcome change from the crashing waves of Arrifana. I reflected on my journey so far, appreciating the diversity of landscapes that Portugal has to offer. The Rota Vicentina truly showcases the best of the country's natural beauty.

Lunch at Restaurante Museu da Batata Doce

After a good hike, it was time for lunch. I had heard about Restaurante Museu da Batata Doce in Rogil, a place dedicated to the sweet potato. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try. The restaurant is known for using sweet potatoes in creative and delicious ways.

The Museu da Batata Doce did not disappoint. I ordered the wild boar stew with sweet potatoes, a local specialty. The stew was rich and flavorful, the sweetness of the potatoes complementing the savory meat perfectly. I also tried the sweet potato and almond pie for dessert – a delightful treat. Paulo, the owner, is a sweet potato producer, ensuring that the restaurant always has a fresh supply of this versatile ingredient.

Evening and Dinner at Costa Alentejana Restaurant

As evening approached, I made my way to Zambujeira do Mar, a charming coastal village where I planned to have dinner. The village is known for its seafood, and I was looking forward to trying some local specialties. I chose Costa Alentejana Restaurant, a place recommended for its fresh shellfish.

Costa Alentejana Restaurant was the perfect choice. I ordered the shellfish boat, a platter filled with a variety of seafood. Lobster, spider crab, clams – it was a feast for the senses. The seafood was incredibly fresh, and the flavors were enhanced by the sea air. I savored every bite, enjoying the lively atmosphere of the restaurant. The restaurant also offers meat dishes, but I stuck to the seafood, wanting to experience the best of the coast.

After dinner, I took a stroll along the beach, watching the sunset over the Atlantic. The sky was ablaze with color, painting a picture of serenity and peace. It was the perfect end to a day of exploration and discovery.

Planning for Tomorrow

Tomorrow, I plan to continue my journey along the Rota Vicentina, heading towards Vila Nova de Milfontes. I’m excited to explore this coastal town and discover its hidden gems. I’ll also be visiting Rocha Negra, a rock formation known for its unique beauty. Breakfast will be at Rocamar, lunch at Alma Nomada Porto Covo, and dinner at Mar Azul Restaurant & Bar. I'm also planning a stop at Queijaria Caprino de Odemira to sample some local cheese.

As I reflect on today’s adventures, I’m grateful for the opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of the Rota Vicentina. Each day brings new discoveries, new flavors, and new connections with the land and its people. I am glad I decided to take the time to do this trip solo, as it allows me to fully appreciate these moments of peace and reflection, something I don't get to do very often back in Berlin.
