A Day of Reflection and Rejuvenation

Today was a day dedicated to exploring the spiritual and natural heart of the Kanazawa region. It was a journey that took me from the ancient stones of Natadera Temple, each experience leaving its own unique mark on my soul. I was looking forward to a day of reflection and immersion in the local culture.

My day began with a hearty breakfast at Restaurant N, located in the hotel, where I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast. The selection was amazing and the service was excellent. After breakfast I headed out to catch the train.

Natadera Temple: A Sacred Encounter

The morning mist hung heavy as I arrived at Natadera Temple. The air was thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, creating an atmosphere of profound tranquility. As an antique restorer, I'm naturally drawn to places where history whispers from every stone, and Natadera was no exception. Founded in 717 by the monk Taicho, the temple has been a sacred site since the Jomon period, with ancient caves revered as places of spiritual rebirth.

The temple is not just a collection of buildings; it's an integration of nature and architecture. The main hall, painted in a striking red, seemed to grow out of the cliff face, and the pagoda stood silhouetted against the sky. I wandered through the grounds, my fingers tracing the weathered surfaces of ancient stones, each telling a silent story of centuries past. The experience was very moving. I spent a lot of time in the main hall. One of the most striking features of Natadera is the Iwaya-tainai-kuguri, the cave passage symbolizing rebirth.

The autumn wind is whiter than the white cliffs of the stony mountain.

It was easy to imagine the countless souls who have passed through these caves seeking spiritual renewal. The temple's connection to nature is palpable. The surrounding forest provides a place for healing, and the seasonal changes bring new beauty to the landscape. I took my time exploring the grounds, feeling a sense of peace settle over me. It was a place where the past and present intertwined, creating a space for reflection and contemplation. It was easy to see why the poet Matsuo Basho was inspired by this place.

Lunch at Pizzeria e Trattoria Da TAKE

After immersing myself in the serene atmosphere of Natadera Temple, I was ready for a change of pace and a hearty lunch. I took the train back towards Kanazawa and headed to Pizzeria e Trattoria Da TAKE. This restaurant is known for its authentic Neapolitan pizzas and cozy atmosphere.

The aroma of wood-fired pizza filled the air as I stepped inside. The restaurant was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to sample the delicious offerings. I ordered the Diavola pizza, known for its spicy kick, and a classic Caesar salad. The pizza was cooked to perfection, with a crispy crust and flavorful toppings. The Caesar salad was fresh and delicious, providing a refreshing contrast to the spicy pizza. I enjoyed every bite, savoring the flavors of Italy in the heart of Kanazawa. It was a delightful culinary experience that left me feeling satisfied and energized for the rest of my day.

Kanazawa Forus: A Shopping Stop

With my stomach happily full, I decided to explore Kanazawa Forus, a shopping mall conveniently located near Kanazawa Station. I am not a big shopper, but I needed to get an extra memory card for my camera, as I had forgotten to pack one. The mall has a wide variety of shops, from fashion boutiques to bookstores, making it a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

I quickly located a shop selling electronics and purchased a new memory card. With that task accomplished, I allowed myself a bit of time to wander through the mall. I browsed through the fashion shops, admiring the unique styles and designs. I also stopped by a bookstore and picked up a book on Japanese art, hoping to deepen my understanding and appreciation of the local culture. The mall was lively and bustling, providing a glimpse into the modern side of Kanazawa. It was a fun and convenient stop, allowing me to take care of a necessary task while also experiencing a bit of the local shopping scene.

Yamanaka Onsen: A Relaxing Retreat

In the late afternoon, I traveled to Yamanaka Onsen, a hot spring resort nestled in the mountains. The drive was scenic, winding through lush forests and alongside the Daishoji River. Yamanaka Onsen is a place with a very ancient history. According to one story, it was discovered by the Buddhist monk Gyoki in the Nara period. Another story says that the Kamakura period samurai Hasebe Nobutsura discovered the springs while following an injured white heron and seeing it bath in the hot waters.

As I stepped off the bus, the air was filled with the soothing sound of rushing water and the subtle scent of sulfur. The town itself exuded a sense of tranquility, with traditional ryokans lining the streets and steam rising from the public bathhouses. I checked into my ryokan and changed into a yukata, eager to experience the onsen.

The hot spring waters were incredibly relaxing, easing the tension in my muscles and calming my mind. I soaked in the various baths, each with its own unique temperature and mineral composition. After my bath, I strolled through the town, admiring the traditional architecture and the serene atmosphere. I visited the Kakusenkei Gorge, where the Ayatori Bridge spans the river in a unique shape. The bridge was designed by avant-garde filmmaker Teshigahara Hiroshi. I also explored Yuge-kaido, the town's main street, lined with shops selling local lacquerware.

Dinner at Genzaemon: A Culinary Finale

For my final meal of the day, I chose Genzaemon, a restaurant known for its authentic Kanazawa cuisine. The restaurant had a cozy and inviting atmosphere, with wooden tables and soft lighting. I ordered a selection of local specialties, including fresh seafood, Kaga vegetables, and local sake. The food was exquisite, each dish bursting with flavor and showcasing the region's culinary heritage.

The sake was the perfect complement to the meal, enhancing the flavors and adding to the overall experience. The service was attentive and friendly, making me feel welcome and comfortable. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploration and relaxation, savoring the tastes of Kanazawa in a warm and inviting setting. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant. Genzaemon is a popular spot with locals and tourists alike.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and contentment. From the spiritual sanctuary of Natadera Temple to the rejuvenating waters of Yamanaka Onsen, each moment has enriched my understanding and appreciation of the Kanazawa region. I look forward to tomorrow, when I plan to explore Mount Utatsu and Utatsuyama Park Hanashoubuen. I am also planning on stopping by The Londonya Bar [The Londonya Bar]. Good night!
