Whispers of the Island

Today was a symphony of contrasts, a dance between the rugged coastline and the serene forests of Yakushima. I started the day with the promise of sea turtles and ended it with the alluring scents of the island's unique flora. It was a day of simple pleasures, a reminder of the beauty that unfolds when you slow down and truly observe.

My Sunday began with an early start, fueled by a hearty breakfast at Michikusa. The Japanese restaurant was a delightful experience. I savored every bite, knowing I needed the energy for the day ahead. Marie would have loved this little spot; she always appreciates the simple, authentic charm of local eateries. It reminded me of our little breakfast nook back in Antwerp, though I must admit, the view here was significantly more exotic.

First on the agenda was the Yakushima Sea Turtle Hall. As someone deeply interested in the natural world, I was eager to learn more about these magnificent creatures. The hall was informative, with exhibits detailing the life cycle and conservation efforts surrounding the local sea turtle population. I learned that Yakushima is a significant nesting site for loggerhead turtles, and the hall plays a crucial role in protecting them.

I was particularly moved by the stories of the challenges these turtles face, from habitat loss to plastic pollution. It reinforced my commitment to responsible travel and minimizing my impact on the environment. Perhaps Thomas, with his youthful energy, would be inspired to join a beach cleanup when I get back home; it's a small act, but every bit helps.

Leaving the Sea Turtle Hall, I set my sights on Isso Lighthouse. The drive there was a treat in itself, with winding coastal roads offering stunning views of the turquoise waters. The lighthouse stood proudly against the horizon, a beacon of guidance for sailors. I imagined the countless ships it had guided safely over the years, each with its own story to tell. It reminded me of the lighthouses along the Belgian coast, stoic sentinels against the relentless sea.

The view from the lighthouse was breathtaking. I could see the coastline stretching out in both directions, the waves crashing against the rocky shore. I spent a good hour simply soaking it all in, feeling a sense of peace and connection to the vastness of the ocean. The lighthouse itself was a testament to human ingenuity and resilience, a reminder that even in the face of nature's power, we can create structures that endure.

Lunch beckoned, and I made my way to a heavenly kitchen. This charming plant-based restaurant was a delightful surprise. Tucked away in a quiet corner of the island, it felt like stepping into someone's home. The food was exquisite, a celebration of local fruits and vegetables. I opted for one of their set menus, a colorful and flavorful array of dishes that nourished both body and soul. It was a mindful eating experience, enhanced by the tranquil atmosphere. Marie, with her vegetarian preferences, would have adored this place.

In the afternoon, I decided to indulge in a bit of sensory exploration at YAWARACA “The Scent of Yakushima LAB”. This unique shop and lab was dedicated to capturing the essence of Yakushima's forests through essential oils. As an antique restorer, I have a deep appreciation for the way scents can evoke memories and emotions, and I was curious to see how YAWARACA translated the island's natural beauty into fragrance.

The shop was a haven of aromas, with different blends capturing the essence of cedar, moss, and other local flora. I learned about the process of extracting essential oils from the island's *jisugi* trees, younger cedar trees replanted after World War II, and the company's commitment to sustainable practices. I purchased a small bottle of their signature blend, hoping to bring a piece of Yakushima's tranquility back to my workshop in Antwerp. Perhaps a few drops diffused in the air while I work on a particularly challenging piece of furniture will transport me back to this serene island.

As evening approached, my stomach started to rumble again, steering me towards Subarashi Indian Restaurant for dinner. I know, I know, Indian food in Japan sounds a bit odd, but after days of Japanese cuisine, I was craving something different. And let me tell you, Subarashi did not disappoint. The food was flavorful and satisfying, a welcome change of pace. The service was quick and friendly, and I enjoyed chatting with the owner about his journey to Yakushima.

Before heading back to my guesthouse, I took a stroll along the beach, savoring the cool evening air and the sound of the waves. The stars were out in full force, a dazzling display of celestial beauty. I thought of Marie and Thomas, wishing they were here to share this moment with me. But I knew they were with me in spirit, cheering me on as I explored this incredible island.

Tomorrow, I plan to delve deeper into the island's interior, with a visit to the Yakushima Fruit Garden - “Papaya no Sato” and the Kigensugi Cedar. I'm looking forward to experiencing more of Yakushima's natural wonders, and perhaps even indulging in a glass of *shochu* at Hitomekuri bar in the evening. Until then, I'll drift off to sleep with the scent of cedar in my nostrils and the memories of today's adventures dancing in my mind.

The day concluded as a perfect blend of exploration and introspection, reaffirming my love for solo travel and the unique connections it fosters with both the destination and oneself. It's days like these that remind me why I embarked on this journey in the first place – to discover, to learn, and to connect with the world around me.
