A Day of Reflection and Discovery

Today was a day of quiet contemplation and stunning views, a perfect blend of cultural immersion and natural beauty. I set out to explore more of Yakushima's hidden gems, finding myself drawn to both the spiritual and the scenic wonders the island has to offer. It’s days like these that remind me why I embarked on this solo journey in the first place – to reconnect with myself amidst the tranquility of nature and the echoes of history.

My day began, as most do here, with a hearty breakfast at the Yakushima Airport Restaurant. It's become a bit of a ritual, fueling up with a traditional Japanese breakfast before heading out for the day's adventures. I must admit, the convenience of the airport restaurant is hard to beat, especially when you're eager to start exploring early. I overheard a couple of travelers discussing their plans to visit Shiratani Unsuikyo Ravine, the inspiration for Princess Mononoke. It reminded me of when Marie and I watched that film with Thomas, sparking our shared fascination with Japanese landscapes. Perhaps on a future trip, I'll bring them here to experience it firsthand.

With a full stomach and a sense of anticipation, I set off towards my first destination: the Yakushima Shrine. Nestled amidst the lush greenery, the shrine exuded an aura of peace and history. As I approached, the gentle rustling of leaves and the soft chirping of birds created a serene atmosphere, inviting quiet reflection. The shrine itself, though not as grand as some of the more famous ones in mainland Japan, possessed a unique charm and a sense of deep-rooted history.

I took my time wandering around the grounds, admiring the traditional architecture and the intricate details of the various structures. The air was thick with the scent of cedar, and the sunlight filtering through the trees cast dappled shadows on the moss-covered stones. I couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the past, imagining the countless generations who had come to this sacred place to offer their prayers and seek solace. According to records, the shrine is one of the oldest on the island. It’s fascinating to think about the stories it could tell, the secrets it holds within its ancient walls.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the quietest of places.

After spending a contemplative hour at the shrine, I decided to make my way to the East China Sea Observatory. The drive itself was a treat, winding along the coastal roads with breathtaking views of the turquoise waters and rugged coastline. As I climbed higher, the vegetation changed, giving way to windswept pines and panoramic vistas. I even spotted a few Yakushima macaques along the way, nonchalantly going about their day. It's always a thrill to see these unique creatures in their natural habitat, a reminder of the island's rich biodiversity.

Finally, I reached the observatory. The view was nothing short of spectacular. The vast expanse of the East China Sea stretched out before me, meeting the horizon in a seamless blend of blue and sky. The wind was strong here, carrying with it the salty scent of the ocean, and I felt a sense of exhilaration as I gazed out at the seemingly endless expanse. I could see why this spot was so popular with photographers; the light was perfect, and the scenery was simply stunning. I took several photos, trying to capture the beauty of the moment, but of course, no image could truly do it justice. It’s one of those things you simply have to experience for yourself.

For lunch, I ventured to Matsutake, a soba restaurant known for its handmade noodles. Finding it was a bit of a challenge, tucked away as it was, but the search was well worth it. The restaurant itself was charming, with a traditional Japanese ambiance and a peaceful garden setting. I ordered the zaru soba, cold soba noodles with a dipping sauce, and it was absolutely delicious. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the dipping sauce had just the right balance of sweet and savory. It was a simple meal, but incredibly satisfying, and the perfect way to refuel after a morning of exploring.

As I sat there, enjoying my lunch and soaking in the tranquil atmosphere, I couldn't help but think about Marie and Thomas. They would have loved this place. Marie, with her appreciation for traditional Japanese culture, would have been fascinated by the restaurant's architecture and garden. And Thomas, with his adventurous spirit, would have enjoyed the challenge of finding it. I made a mental note to bring them here someday, to share this special experience with them.

In the late afternoon, I decided to treat myself to a bit of relaxation at Seirios. This cozy bar and restaurant had been recommended to me by several locals, and I was eager to check it out. It turned out to be exactly what I needed – a laid-back atmosphere, friendly staff, and a great selection of local beers and spirits. I opted for a Yakushima Cedar beer, brewed right here on the island. It was crisp, refreshing, and had a subtle cedar aroma that perfectly captured the essence of Yakushima. As I sipped my beer, I chatted with some of the other patrons, mostly locals and a few fellow travelers. It was interesting to hear their stories and perspectives, and I felt a sense of camaraderie that transcended language and culture.

Dinner was at Kamogawa Restaurant, a local favorite known for its seafood. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to sample the fresh catches of the day. I ordered the sashimi special set, and it was an absolute delight. The fish was incredibly fresh, and the presentation was beautiful. I savored each bite, appreciating the skill and artistry of the chef. The staff was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect way to end a perfect day.

As I walked back to my accommodation under the starlit sky, I reflected on the day's experiences. I had explored ancient shrines, marveled at breathtaking vistas, and savored delicious local cuisine. I had connected with the island's history, culture, and natural beauty. And I had reaffirmed my love for solo travel, for the freedom and flexibility it allows, and for the opportunity it provides to connect with myself and the world around me.

Tomorrow, I plan to tackle the Sandaisugi Cedar and possibly even Mt. Miyanoura, weather permitting. Another day of hiking awaits, and I'm eager to see what other wonders Yakushima has in store. I might also stop by Gramoon, a local shop, to pick up a souvenir or two. But for now, it's time to rest and recharge, to prepare for another day of adventure in this magical island.

This trip is turning out to be exactly what I needed. A chance to escape the everyday, to reconnect with nature, and to rediscover myself in the process. As I drift off to sleep, I can't help but feel grateful for this opportunity, and excited for what tomorrow may bring.
