Today was a day of contrasts, blending the thrill of off-road exploration with the comforting embrace of Montenegrin hospitality and cuisine. From the stunning vistas to the warm smiles, Durmitor continues to captivate me at every turn.

My day began nestled in the cozy embrace of the Mountain View Lodges. The promise of breathtaking mountain views was certainly fulfilled as I sipped my morning coffee, the crisp air invigorating my senses. These lodges are a perfect blend of rustic charm and modern comfort, a true haven in the heart of Durmitor. As much as I enjoy roughing it, a little luxury now and then is always welcome!

Breakfast was calling, and I knew just the place: Nacionalni restoran Crno jezero. The restaurant is set against the backdrop of the stunning Black Lake, the views alone were worth the visit. The air was filled with the scent of pine and wood smoke, a symphony of nature's aromas. I savored a traditional Montenegrin breakfast of kačamak (a creamy polenta-like dish) and locally sourced cheese, fueling up for the day's adventures. The friendly staff made me feel right at home, their warm smiles a testament to Montenegrin hospitality. I overheard other travelers raving about the steak, locally cooked lamb, and trout – clearly, this is a place where culinary delights abound.

With a full stomach and a spirit of adventure, I set off for the Durmitor off-road experience I had booked. I must admit, the idea of tearing through the rugged terrain in an ATV was a little daunting, but the allure of hidden vistas and untouched landscapes was too strong to resist. I chose a tour that promised a mix of paved roads and off-road trails, a perfect balance for a novice like myself. The guides were fantastic, providing a thorough safety briefing and ensuring I felt comfortable behind the wheel.

As I navigated the winding paths, the landscape unfolded before me in all its glory. Towering peaks, lush meadows, and glimpses of the Tara Canyon left me breathless. The power of the ATV was exhilarating, and I felt a sense of freedom as I conquered each obstacle. We stopped at several viewpoints, each offering a unique perspective of Durmitor's majestic beauty. I learned that there are different routes one can take, some leading to Riblje and Vražje lakes, and others offering panoramic views of the Black Lake and Tara Canyon.

All that off-roading certainly worked up an appetite. For lunch, I headed to Restaurant Or'O, known for its traditional Montenegrin dishes and cozy atmosphere. I had heard wonderful things about their lamb dish, described as incredibly tender and flavorful. I decided to try the beef goulash and beef risotto as well. The restaurant was bustling with activity, a mix of locals and tourists all eager to savor the flavors of Durmitor. Although the service was a tad slow due to the crowd, the staff was attentive and friendly. The food was simply divine, a testament to the region's culinary heritage. I overheard some patrons mentioning a 20% price increase since January and 40% since Covid – a sign of the times, I suppose, but the quality of the food certainly justified the expense.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, I made my way to Izvor for dinner. This restaurant had been recommended to me for its traditional Montenegrin cuisine and charming ambiance. Izvor certainly didn't disappoint. I opted for the жареный барашек (roasted lamb), a local specialty, and a bowl of tomato soup. The lamb was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, with a rich, smoky flavor. The tomato soup was hearty and comforting, a perfect complement to the meal. The portions were generous, a common trait in Montenegrin cuisine, and I savored every bite. The friendly server made the experience even more enjoyable, sharing stories of the region and offering recommendations for local wines. I learned that Izvor also offers accommodation and horseback riding, something I'll definitely consider on my next visit.

To cap off the day, I decided to experience Žabljak's nightlife at Montenegro Pub. The pub was lively and welcoming, filled with locals and tourists alike. I ordered a local Nikšićko beer and settled in to soak up the atmosphere. The pub was adorned with traditional Montenegrin décor, creating a cozy and inviting space. I struck up a conversation with a local, who shared stories of Durmitor's history and folklore. It was a perfect ending to a day of adventure and discovery.

As I reflect on today's experiences, I am filled with gratitude for the beauty and warmth of Durmitor. From the exhilarating off-road adventure to the comforting flavors of Montenegrin cuisine, every moment has been a feast for the senses. This solo journey has been a profound reminder of the importance of connecting with nature and embracing the spirit of adventure. Tomorrow, I plan to explore Canyon Cijevna and the Ancient Illyrian City of Meteon. I'm also hoping to visit Krcma Nostalgija for breakfast, Momčilov Grad for lunch, and Ukus Durmitora for dinner. Before I head out I plan to stop by Sport Vision Zabljak for some shopping. I am ready to see what tomorrow brings.
