First Day Discoveries in Hoi An

After a long journey from Berlin, Maximilian and I finally arrived in Hoi An, a city that has been calling to me with its promise of vibrant culture and historical charm. I'm excited to share our initial experiences as we dive into this Vietnamese treasure.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Cafe Sữa 2. I opted for a traditional *cà phê sữa đá* , the strong Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk over ice, while Maximilian enjoyed a simple *cà phê đen* , black coffee, which gave us the perfect jolt of energy to start our explorations. The cafe was bustling with locals and tourists alike, all eager to start their day, and it provided a great first taste of Hoi An's lively atmosphere.

Fueled and ready, we ventured into the heart of Phố cổ Hội An, the Old Town. The moment we stepped onto the cobblestone streets, I was captivated. The town is a mesmerizing blend of Vietnamese, Chinese, and French colonial architecture. The shophouses, painted in hues of yellow, were adorned with colorful lanterns, creating a magical ambiance even in the daylight. We spent hours wandering through the narrow alleyways, soaking in the sights and sounds of this UNESCO World Heritage site.

The beauty of Hoi An lies not just in its architecture, but in the vibrant spirit of its people and the stories etched into its ancient streets.

Our next stop was the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge (Chùa Cầu). This historical landmark, built in the late 16th century by Japanese merchants , is more than just a bridge; it's a symbol of cultural harmony. As we walked across, I admired the intricate carvings and the small temple dedicated to Tran Vo Bac De, a deity believed to govern the weather. The bridge is featured on the 20,000 VND banknote , a testament to its enduring significance in Vietnamese culture. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, was fascinated by the blend of Japanese, Vietnamese, and Chinese influences in its design.

After the bridge, we immersed ourselves in the local culture with some shopping. Hoi An is known as a shopper's paradise , and the Old Town (Shopping Street) did not disappoint. We explored numerous shops, each offering unique handcrafted souvenirs, traditional lanterns, and intricately designed textiles. I was particularly drawn to the silk lanterns , their vibrant colors illuminating the streets. Maximilian found a skilled tailor and considered getting a custom-made suit, a popular choice in Hoi An. We also strolled along Tran Phu Street, a vibrant shopping area with a wide selection of authentic Vietnamese goods. Bargaining is part of the culture here , and I enjoyed haggling with the friendly vendors to get the best prices. We picked up a few small gifts for our families back in Berlin, promising ourselves to return for more serious shopping later in the trip.

For lunch, we chose HOME Hoi An - HOME Vietnamese Restaurant, enticed by its reputation for authentic Vietnamese cuisine. The restaurant, set in a charming French townhouse , offered a serene escape from the bustling streets. We indulged in a variety of local dishes, including Cao Lầu and Bánh Mì , each bursting with flavor and fresh ingredients. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the meticulously curated menu that showcased the diverse regional flavors of Vietnam. The elegant dining space and hospitable service made our lunch a truly delightful experience.

In the afternoon, we visited the Precious Heritage Art Gallery Museum, a unique space dedicated to showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Vietnam's ethnic groups. The museum, the brainchild of French photographer Réhahn , features stunning portraits and traditional costumes from 49 of Vietnam's 54 ethnic groups. I was deeply moved by the stories and traditions of these communities, and the museum provided a profound appreciation for Vietnam's cultural diversity. Maximilian, with his keen interest in photography, was impressed by Réhahn's ability to capture the soul of his subjects.

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Secret Garden Hoi An for dinner. Tucked away in a quiet laneway , the restaurant lived up to its name, offering a tranquil retreat from the lively town. The open-air setting, adorned with lush greenery and a fish pond , created a magical ambiance. We savored traditional Vietnamese dishes, beautifully presented and bursting with authentic flavors. The restaurant also offers cooking classes and an entertainment program, adding to its allure. It was the perfect ending to a day filled with exploration and discovery.

Before heading back to our homestay, we took one last stroll through the Old Town. The lantern-lit streets were even more enchanting at night , with the colorful lights reflecting off the Thu Bon River. We watched as locals and tourists released floating lanterns onto the water , a tradition believed to bring good luck and happiness. The scene was truly magical, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience this beautiful city.

As we walked, we discussed our plans for tomorrow. We're planning to explore the Cam Thanh Rice Fields and visit Hoi An Memories Land. I'm particularly excited about the rice fields; I've heard they offer a beautiful glimpse into rural Vietnamese life. We might even try our hand at some traditional crafts.

Back at the Green Coco Homestay, I took some time to reflect on our first day in Hoi An. Despite forgetting my power adapter and lightweight backpack, the day was filled with unforgettable moments. Hoi An has already captured my heart with its rich history, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Before drifting off to sleep, I remembered a quote I once read about travel:

Travel is more than seeing sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living.

This quote perfectly encapsulates my feelings about today. Hoi An is not just a place to visit; it's an experience that changes you, broadening your perspective and deepening your appreciation for the world's diverse cultures. I'm excited to continue this journey of discovery with Maximilian, and I look forward to sharing more of our adventures with you all.
