Finding Serenity and Flavor on the Kumano Kodo

Today was a beautiful blend of exploration and relaxation, immersing myself in the culture and flavors of the Kumano Kodo. It’s amazing how much you can experience in a single day when you open yourself up to the possibilities. From gathering information to savoring local cuisine, every moment felt like a step deeper into the heart of Japan.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sansaro Cafe. The cafe had a cool vibe, nestled by the Akagi-gawa river with mountains all around. It was opened in 2014 by Ms. Uzawa, who clearly has a love for the Kumano region. I enjoyed a simple yet satisfying meal, fueling up for the day’s adventures. I opted for the traditional Japanese breakfast set, which included grilled fish, miso soup, and rice. It was the perfect way to start the day, and the peaceful scenery certainly added to the experience. The others enjoyed coffee and pastries, all while we discussed our plans for the day.

After breakfast, we headed to the Kumano Kodo Information Center. It’s always a good idea to get oriented, especially in a place so rich with history and significance. The center provided a wealth of knowledge about the pilgrimage routes, local attractions, and cultural insights. I picked up a few maps and brochures, eager to learn more about the trails we would be exploring in the coming days. Hans was particularly interested in the historical exhibits, while our friends checked out the local crafts on display. The staff were incredibly helpful, answering all our questions with patience and enthusiasm.

From there, we ventured to the Fushiogami Teahouse, a serene retreat along the Kumano Kodo. This wasn't just a stop for refreshments; it was an authentic experience steeped in Japanese culture. As we stepped inside, the warm and welcoming atmosphere greeted us, making it the perfect place to unwind. The teahouse specializes in traditional Japanese teas and offers a selection of delectable snacks that pair perfectly with your beverage of choice. I chose a matcha latte, while others sampled local herbal blends. The gentle sounds of nature created a perfect backdrop for reflection, and we all felt a sense of tranquility wash over us.

For lunch, we made our way to Onigajō cliff Center. The cliffside views were breathtaking, and the restaurant offered a variety of options. I decided on a seafood set meal, savoring the fresh flavors of the ocean. Sophie enjoyed a kids' meal, while Hans tried a local specialty. The atmosphere was lively, with many other travelers stopping by to enjoy the scenery and the food. After lunch, we took a short walk along the cliffs, marveling at the rugged coastline and the crashing waves.

Our afternoon was dedicated to exploring the Toretore Market, a bustling hub of local produce and goods. The market was huge, offering everything from fresh fish to pickled plums. I was in souvenir heaven, picking up gifts for family and friends back in Berlin. The market was also a feast for the senses, with vibrant colors, enticing aromas, and the lively chatter of vendors and shoppers. I couldn't resist trying some local street food, indulging in takoyaki and a refreshing cup of green tea ice cream.

In the evening, we treated ourselves to a delicious dinner at Hinoki Steak House. This steakhouse is known for its high-quality Kumano beef. I opted for a tender fillet, cooked to perfection. The restaurant had a cozy atmosphere, and the staff were incredibly attentive. Hans enjoyed a seafood dish, while Sophie devoured a kid-friendly hamburger. It was the perfect way to end a day of exploring, savoring the flavors of the region in a relaxed and welcoming setting.

As I reflect on today's journey, I am struck by the simple beauty and profound spirituality of the Kumano Kodo. This pilgrimage route is more than just a trail; it’s a pathway to self-discovery and cultural immersion. Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Kumano-Kodo Shimizu-toge Pass and Oyunohara. I’m excited to continue our adventure and uncover more of the hidden gems of this enchanting region. I am especially looking forward to visiting the Oyunohara, as I read that it used to be the location where the Hongu Shrine once stood.

The autumn air is crisp and invigorating here in September, making it perfect for hiking and exploring. I am glad I remembered to pack my rain jacket, as the weather can be unpredictable in the mountains. However, I did forget to bring sunscreen and a travel adapter, which I will need to purchase tomorrow. Overall, today was a wonderful experience, filled with cultural insights, culinary delights, and moments of quiet reflection. I feel grateful for the opportunity to explore this beautiful region with my friends and to share my experiences with all of you.

Before drifting off to sleep, I journaled about my experiences, trying to capture the essence of the day. As an English language teacher, I find that writing helps me process my thoughts and feelings, and it’s a wonderful way to preserve memories of my travels. I'm also excited to share these stories with my students back in Berlin, inspiring them to explore the world and embrace new cultures. Goodnight from Kumano Kodo!
