Day 6: Navigating Nature's Wonders: River Cruises and Gorge Adventures in Kumano Kodo
Embark on a serene river journey and explore the majestic Doro Kyo Gorge, experiencing the breathtaking beauty of Kumano Kodo.
A Day of River Dreams and Gorge-ous Views
Today was all about embracing the natural beauty of Kumano Kodo from a unique perspective. We traded our hiking boots for boat rides and gorge explorations, a refreshing change of pace that allowed us to soak in the scenery in a completely different way. It's amazing how shifting your vantage point can reveal entirely new facets of a place, and today was a perfect example of that.
The day began with a hearty breakfast at Watarase Onsen Cafe. I enjoyed a traditional Japanese breakfast set, complete with grilled fish, miso soup, and pickled vegetables. It was the perfect fuel for our morning adventure. Hans opted for a Western-style breakfast, while the rest of our group chose a variety of Japanese dishes. After breakfast, we headed towards Doro Kyo Gorge.

The drive to Doro Kyo Gorge was an experience in itself, with winding roads offering glimpses of the stunning landscape. The anticipation grew as we got closer, and the first sight of the gorge did not disappoint. The lush greenery, towering cliffs, and the emerald waters of the Kitayama River created a scene straight out of a postcard.
We then experienced the Kumano Boat River Cruise, a serene journey along the clear waters of the Kumano River. As we glided along, we were surrounded by lush greenery and picturesque views that evoked tranquility and a sense of wonder. The river itself has significant cultural and historical importance, having served as a vital route for pilgrims traveling to sacred sites like Kumano Hongu Taisha.

Sometimes, the best way to appreciate a place is to let the waters carry you, revealing its hidden corners and untold stories.
The boat cruise offered a unique perspective of the Kumano Kodo region. The boatmen were friendly and provided insightful commentary, pointing out unique rock formations and sharing stories about the area's history. I was particularly fascinated by the Mani-iwa Rock, an iconic formation that resembled ancient script. The gentle rocking of the boat and the soothing sounds of nature created a peaceful atmosphere, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty of our surroundings. It was interesting to learn that for over 1000 years pilgrims have been making the journey to Kumano, and the Kumano-gawa River was a vital section of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route.
After the boat cruise, we decided to have lunch at Fushiogami Teahouse. This charming cafe is located along the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route and is known for its traditional Japanese teas and snacks. The teahouse offered a warm and welcoming atmosphere, making it the perfect place to unwind after our morning adventure. I savored a cup of matcha tea and a selection of local sweets, while Hans enjoyed a hearty bowl of udon noodles. The teahouse also provided stunning views of the surrounding landscape, enhancing the overall experience. I made a mental note to try to replicate some of the sweets when I got back to Berlin.

In the evening, we had dinner at Yunomine Onsen Shop/Dining Hall. This casual Japanese-style restaurant is located in the Yunomine Onsen area, which is famous for its hot springs and cultural heritage. We indulged in a variety of traditional dishes, all prepared with fresh, local ingredients. The ambiance was warm and welcoming, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful. It was a great way to end a day of exploration and relaxation. I even managed to pick up a few local souvenirs from the shop.

To cap off the night, we decided to check out Why Kumano, a local bar known for its craft beers and lively atmosphere. It was a great spot to unwind and reflect on the day's adventures. We chatted with some locals and fellow travelers, sharing stories and laughter. It's these kinds of interactions that truly enrich the travel experience. I even tried a local sake, which was surprisingly smooth and flavorful.

As I reflect on today, I am filled with gratitude for the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of Kumano Kodo. The river cruise and gorge exploration provided a unique perspective, while the teahouse and dining hall offered a taste of local flavors. And the evening at the bar allowed us to connect with the community and create lasting memories. It was a day of perfect harmony, blending adventure, relaxation, and cultural immersion.
Tomorrow, we're planning to explore Kumano Kodo Park and Fudarakusan-ji. I'm particularly excited about visiting the park, as I've heard it offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and forests. And Fudarakusan-ji, with its rich history and spiritual significance, promises to be a fascinating experience. I am looking forward to more hiking, more temples, and more breathtaking scenery.
