Immerse yourself in the serene beauty of Kumano Kodo, hiking ancient trails and exploring Yoshino Kumano National Park with friends.
Day 12: Finding Peace on the Path
Today was a day of quiet reflection and breathtaking scenery as we continued our journey along the Kumano Kodo. There's something profoundly moving about walking these ancient paths, feeling the weight of history and the presence of something greater than myself. It's days like these that remind me why I love to travel—to connect with the world and with my own spirit.
Our morning began with breakfast at Watarase Onsen Cafe. It was a simple meal, but the cozy atmosphere and the gentle sounds of the surrounding nature made it special. Sipping on a warm coffee, I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this unique part of the world with my friends.

Fuelled up, we set out to tackle the Kumano-Kodo Nakahechi Pilgrimage Route. The path wound its way through the lush forests of Yoshino Kumano National Park. The air was fresh and clean, carrying the scent of cedar and damp earth. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, creating an ethereal glow on the moss-covered stones beneath our feet. The trail was challenging at times, with steep inclines and uneven terrain, but the sense of accomplishment with each step made it all worthwhile. We passed several small shrines and ancient monuments along the way, each one a testament to the deep spiritual significance of this place.

The best journeys in life are those that answer questions you never thought to ask.
At midday, we stopped for lunch at Tororoya, a local restaurant known for its traditional Japanese cuisine. I decided to try their signature dish, *tororo* (grated yam), served over a bed of rice. It was simple, wholesome, and incredibly satisfying. Jennifer loves to try new foods, so this was a great experience for her.

After lunch, we continued our trek through Yoshino Kumano National Park. The park is a sprawling expanse of mountains, valleys, and forests, offering endless opportunities for exploration and discovery. We hiked along winding trails, crossed crystal-clear streams, and marveled at the stunning views from the mountaintops. The park's diverse ecosystem is home to a variety of plant and animal life, and we kept our eyes peeled for deer and various bird species.
As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Road Station Oku-kumanokodo Hongu, a local shop offering a variety of souvenirs and local goods. I picked up a few small gifts for Sophie and Hans, wanting to bring a piece of Kumano Kodo back to Berlin with me.

For dinner, we stopped at Sukiya R42 Kumano, a casual dining spot famous for its beef rice bowls. After a long day of hiking, a hearty, affordable meal was exactly what we needed. I enjoyed a classic *gyudon*, savoring the tender beef and sweet onions over a bed of fluffy white rice. It was the perfect way to refuel and recharge before heading back to our accommodation.

The Kumano Kodo is more than just a hiking trail; it's a spiritual pathway that invites introspection and connection. I feel incredibly fortunate to have had the opportunity to walk these ancient paths and experience the beauty of Yoshino Kumano National Park.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore the Kumano Kodo - Nakahechi Daimon-saka Pilgrim Route and Kumano Kodo Park. Perhaps we'll even stop by the Kumano Winery Guest House for a well-deserved drink after a day of hiking!
I'm already anticipating sharing more stories and discoveries with you all. Until then, *sayōnara* from the Kumano Kodo!
