Whispers of the Ancients

Today was a day of deep reflection and physical exertion, a perfect combination for clearing the mind and invigorating the soul. The ancient paths of Kumano Kodo beckoned, and I eagerly answered, ready to immerse myself in the spiritual heart of Japan. I knew this journey would be more than just a hike; it would be a pilgrimage into the past, a chance to connect with centuries of seekers who have walked these very trails seeking enlightenment and peace.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Sansaro Cafe. I opted for the traditional Japanese breakfast set, a colorful array of small dishes that included grilled fish, miso soup, pickled vegetables, and fluffy rice. It was the perfect fuel for the day ahead, providing the energy I needed to tackle the ancient Daimon-saka Pilgrim Route. The cafe itself was charming, a mountainside homestay that exuded warmth and hospitality. I made a mental note to try one of Ms. Uzawa's yoga lessons next time I'm in the area.

With renewed energy, we set off for the Kumano Kodo - Nakahechi Daimon-saka Pilgrim Route. The air was crisp and cool, carrying the scent of cedar and damp earth. As we approached the entrance to the trail, the towering cedar trees created a natural gateway, their ancient presence immediately instilling a sense of reverence. The path itself was a marvel, a well-preserved stone staircase that wound its way up the mountainside. Each step was a testament to the countless pilgrims who had walked this path before us, their footsteps echoing through the centuries.

The Daimon-saka Pilgrim Route is about 640 meters long and features moss-covered stone steps and dense trees. As I ascended, I couldn't help but marvel at the meticulous craftsmanship of the stone steps, each one perfectly placed to provide a secure foothold. The moss that clung to the stones added a touch of timeless beauty, softening the edges and creating a sense of harmony with the surrounding forest. The towering cedar trees, some of which are over 800 years old, stood as silent guardians of the path, their massive trunks and sprawling branches creating a cathedral-like canopy overhead.

Walking through the ancient Kumano Kodo is like stepping back in time, feeling the weight of history beneath your feet and the whispers of countless pilgrims guiding your way.

The ascent was challenging, but the beauty of the surroundings kept us motivated. Sunlight filtered through the canopy, casting dappled shadows on the path. The air was alive with the sounds of nature – the gentle rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, and the distant murmur of a stream. We paused frequently to catch our breath and take in the stunning views, the mountains stretching out before us in a tapestry of green.

Along the way, we encountered other pilgrims, each with their own story and purpose. We exchanged smiles and nods of encouragement, a silent acknowledgment of the shared journey we were undertaking. There was a sense of camaraderie among us, a feeling of being connected by something larger than ourselves. It was a reminder that we are all travelers on this earth, seeking meaning and purpose in our lives.

Reaching the top of the Daimon-saka Pilgrim Route, we were rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. The panoramic vista stretched out before us, encompassing rolling hills, verdant forests, and the sparkling waters of the Pacific Ocean in the distance. It was a moment of pure serenity, a feeling of being on top of the world, far removed from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

After taking some time to soak in the view, we made our way to Kumano Kodo Park. The park offered a welcome respite, with well-maintained trails and tranquil gardens. We wandered through the park, admiring the carefully manicured landscapes and the vibrant colors of the flowers in bloom. It was a perfect place to reflect on our journey and appreciate the beauty of nature.

As the afternoon wore on, we decided to treat ourselves to a little relaxation at Kumano Winery Guest House /Dal Chef’s Table. Although primarily known for its Italian cuisine and wine, the guest house also offered a cozy bar where we could unwind and enjoy a refreshing drink. I opted for a glass of local sake, savoring the smooth, clean taste as I reflected on the day's adventures. Hans enjoyed a glass of local wine, while we shared stories and laughter, our bonds strengthened by the shared experience of the day.

It was inspiring to hear their stories, a reminder that there are people all over the world who are working to make a positive impact on their communities.

For dinner, we ventured to Kakinoate. The restaurant had a warm and inviting ambiance, with soft lighting and traditional Japanese décor. I ordered a selection of small dishes, each one a work of art in its own right. The flavors were delicate and nuanced, a testament to the chef's skill and artistry. It was a perfect ending to a perfect day, a culinary journey that celebrated the best of Kumano Kodo's local ingredients.
