Whispers of the Past

Kyoto continues to enchant me with its blend of history and tranquility. Today was a day of spiritual exploration, venturing into the heart of the city's most iconic and serene locations. With Maximilian by my side, I embraced the challenge of climbing thousands of vibrant torii gates, each step revealing a deeper connection to Japan's rich cultural tapestry.

Our day began with a delightful breakfast at Yasakadori Enraku. The restaurant was tucked away, offering a serene start to what promised to be a busy day. The private room was a lovely touch, allowing us to ease into the morning with some delicious local fare. I particularly enjoyed the delicate dashi flavors in the oden, which was both comforting and invigorating. Maximilian, ever the adventurous foodie, tried a bit of everything, declaring the combination of oden and Kyoto pickles exceptional. It was the perfect way to fuel up before our temple visits.

Journey Through a Thousand Gates

Our first major stop was the breathtaking Fushimi Inari Shrine (Thousand Torii Gates). Even though I'd seen countless photos, nothing prepared me for the sheer scale and vibrancy of the vermilion torii gates winding up the mountain. The crisp February air was invigorating as we started our ascent, each gate a testament to the devotion and wishes of those who came before us. The further we climbed, the fewer people we encountered, allowing for moments of quiet reflection amidst the stunning scenery. I took countless photos, trying to capture the essence of the experience, but I knew that the true beauty was something you had to feel.

The history of Fushimi Inari is fascinating. Founded in 711 AD, it has been a place of prayer for good harvests, business prosperity, and family safety for over 1300 years. The deity Inari is believed to be the god of rice, and foxes are considered to be their messengers, which explains the many fox statues scattered throughout the shrine grounds. I found myself particularly drawn to these statues, each with its own unique expression and offering a sense of ancient wisdom.

Sometimes, the most profound journeys are those that lead us inward, through layers of history and devotion.

As we climbed higher, the views of Kyoto became increasingly spectacular. The city stretched out before us, a tapestry of traditional buildings and modern structures, all framed by the surrounding mountains. We paused at the Yotsutsuji intersection, taking in the panoramic vista and catching our breath. It was a moment of pure serenity, a reminder of the beauty and tranquility that Kyoto offers in abundance.

The climb was challenging, but the sense of accomplishment upon reaching the summit was immense. We explored the inner shrines, each with its own unique charm and offering a glimpse into the spiritual heart of the mountain. The atmosphere was peaceful and reverent, a world away from the bustling city below. We took our time descending, savoring the experience and reflecting on the journey.

Zen Gardens and Ancient Architecture

After our invigorating climb, we journeyed to Tōfuku-ji Temple, another of Kyoto's most important Zen temples. Founded in 1236, Tofuku-ji is renowned for its stunning autumn colors, but even in February, it held a unique charm. The temple grounds were serene, with towering structures and meticulously designed gardens that spoke of centuries of history and contemplation.

We entered the Hojo, the head priest's former living quarters, and were immediately captivated by the surrounding gardens. Designed in the late 1930s by Mirei Shigemori, the gardens are a unique blend of Zen aesthetics and modernist sensibilities. Each garden faces a different direction, employing pebbles, rocks, moss, and trees in innovative and thought-provoking ways. The northern garden, with its checkerboard pattern of stones and moss, was particularly striking.

The Sanmon Gate, the oldest Zen gate in Japan, was another highlight of our visit. Dating back to 1425, the towering gate exuded a sense of ancient grandeur, a testament to the enduring power of Zen Buddhism. We also explored the Hondo, the main hall, which was reconstructed in 1934 after a fire. The sheer scale of the building was impressive, a reminder of the temple's importance as a center of spiritual learning and practice.

A Culinary Interlude

By lunchtime, we were both ravenous. We stopped at Oryori Menami for lunch. The restaurant is known for its Obanzai cuisine, Kyoto-style home cooking that emphasizes seasonal ingredients and traditional methods. The cozy atmosphere was inviting, and the staff were incredibly welcoming, making us feel right at home.

We opted for the Obanzai platter, a colorful array of small dishes that showcased the best of Kyoto's culinary heritage. Each dish was thoughtfully prepared, highlighting the natural flavors of the ingredients. From the delicate seasonal vegetables to the savory grilled fish, every bite was a delight. Maximilian particularly enjoyed the sake, which he declared the perfect complement to the meal. It was a truly authentic taste of Kyoto, a culinary experience that I will long remember.

Treasures of Kyoto Craft

In the afternoon, we decided to explore the Kyoto Crafts Store, hoping to find a unique souvenir to remind us of our trip. The store was a treasure trove of traditional Japanese crafts, from delicate ceramics to intricate textiles. I was particularly drawn to the beautiful kimonos, each a work of art in its own right. Maximilian, ever the pragmatist, was more interested in the practical items, such as the handcrafted knives and pottery.

I ended up purchasing a small, hand-painted tea set, its delicate floral design capturing the essence of Kyoto's beauty. Maximilian opted for a set of handcrafted chopsticks, each made from a different type of wood. We both felt that we had found something special, a tangible reminder of our time in this enchanting city.

An Evening of Authentic Flavors

As evening approached, we made our way to Saishuan Shiraki for dinner. This small Izakaya-style restaurant promised an authentic taste of Japanese pub cuisine, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was lively and welcoming, with locals and tourists alike mingling and enjoying the delicious food and drinks.

We ordered a variety of small plates, including yakitori skewers, crispy tempura, and savory grilled fish. Each dish was expertly prepared, showcasing the chef's skill and passion. The sake selection was impressive, and we enjoyed trying a few different varieties, each with its own unique flavor profile. The owner, Miho-san, was incredibly kind and welcoming. She even dressed us in tinsel and banners because she found out we were celebrating a birthday! I couldn't keep track of how many plates we were served but there were so many unique flavours, the surprises kept coming.

As we walked back to The Hiramatsu Kyoto, the city was bathed in a soft, golden light. The day had been long and full, but we were both filled with a sense of contentment. Kyoto had once again worked its magic, captivating us with its beauty, history, and culture. I felt grateful for the opportunity to experience this incredible city with Maximilian, sharing moments of joy, reflection, and connection.
