Kyoto's Final Bow

As our Kyoto adventure drew to a close, I wanted to soak in every last bit of its magic. Today was a whirlwind of ancient temples, vibrant shrines, and culinary delights, a perfect culmination of our ten days in this captivating city. Maximilian and I set out early, eager to embrace the day's itinerary and create lasting memories.

Our morning began with a whimsical breakfast at Alice On Wednesday. The shop was themed around Alice in Wonderland, and it really felt like we were starting the day with a touch of fantasy. The quirky decorations and playful treats set a cheerful tone, a delightful contrast to the solemn beauty we were about to encounter.

Our first stop was Rengeō-in, also known as Sanjūsangen-dō Temple. This temple is famed for its hall housing 1,001 statues of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. As we stepped inside, the sheer scale of the hall was breathtaking. Row upon row of golden statues stretched into the distance, each with a unique expression and posture. The craftsmanship was exquisite, a testament to the dedication and skill of the artisans who created them centuries ago. The atmosphere was serene and contemplative, a space for quiet reflection on compassion and enlightenment.

The beauty of Kyoto lies not just in its picturesque landscapes, but in the profound sense of peace and history that permeates every corner.

I found myself particularly drawn to the central statue of the Thousand-Armed Kannon, a towering figure radiating grace and power. It was easy to get lost in the details, admiring the intricate carvings and the serene expressions on the faces of the surrounding statues. Maximilian, ever the history enthusiast, was fascinated by the temple's origins and the stories behind the statues. We spent a good hour wandering through the hall, absorbing the spiritual energy and marveling at the artistry.

Leaving Sanjūsangen-dō, we made our way to Fushimi Inari Taisha, perhaps one of the most iconic and visually striking places in Kyoto. This shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which wind up the mountainside, creating a seemingly endless tunnel of vibrant color. As we approached the entrance, the sight of the towering gates against the backdrop of the forest was truly awe-inspiring.

The path through the torii gates led us on a winding ascent up the mountain. Each gate is dedicated by individuals or companies, their names inscribed on the pillars. The further we climbed, the fewer people we encountered, and the more the atmosphere shifted from bustling to tranquil. The play of light and shadow through the gates created a mesmerizing effect, and the air was filled with the scent of cedar and the sounds of the forest.

Maximilian and I decided to hike as far as we could, eager to experience the full extent of the shrine. The climb was challenging at times, but the stunning views and the unique atmosphere made it all worthwhile. Along the way, we encountered small shrines, stone foxes (the messengers of Inari), and hidden bamboo groves, each adding to the sense of discovery and wonder.

Reaching the summit felt like a true accomplishment. The panoramic views of Kyoto stretching out below were breathtaking, a fitting reward for our efforts. We took some time to rest and soak in the scenery, feeling a sense of gratitude for the opportunity to experience such a special place. As we descended, the sun began to set, casting a golden glow on the torii gates, creating a magical and unforgettable scene.

For lunch, we indulged in a delightful shabu shabu experience at Hyoto Shijo Karasuma. The restaurant was known for its high-quality meat and refreshing broth, a perfect way to refuel after our hike. The staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating, and the set courses were delicious and satisfying. It was a welcome break from the temples and shrines, a chance to savor the culinary delights of Kyoto.

As evening approached, we decided to venture out for a final taste of Kyoto nightlife. We found ourselves at The Roots of all evil, a bar that promised expertly crafted cocktails and a unique atmosphere. The bar was cozy and inviting, with an eclectic mix of modern and traditional Japanese elements. The bartender was a true mixologist, creating innovative and delicious drinks that were a perfect end to our day.

Sitting there with Maximilian, sipping our cocktails and reflecting on our time in Kyoto, I felt a pang of sadness that our trip was coming to an end. But I also felt a deep sense of gratitude for all the incredible experiences we had shared. Kyoto had captured my heart with its beauty, history, and culture, and I knew that I would carry its memories with me always.

Tomorrow, we bid farewell to Kyoto and begin our journey back to Berlin. While I'm excited to return home, I'll miss the serene temples, the vibrant shrines, and the delicious food of this enchanting city. Kyoto, you've been a dream come true.

Before heading back to our hotel, The Hiramatsu Kyoto, we decided to take a leisurely stroll through the Gion district. The traditional wooden machiya houses were beautifully lit, and the narrow streets were filled with a sense of timeless charm. We even caught a glimpse of a geiko hurrying to an appointment, a fleeting moment that added to the mystique of the area. The Hiramatsu Kyoto's location was indeed perfect for this last-minute exploration of the city.

Our dinner at Nishikawa was nothing short of spectacular. The restaurant, known for its refined and innovative Japanese cuisine, offered a multi-course kaiseki experience that was a feast for the senses. Each dish was a work of art, meticulously prepared and beautifully presented. The flavors were subtle and complex, highlighting the natural ingredients and the chef's mastery of traditional techniques. It was the perfect culinary finale to our Kyoto adventure.

As we savored each course, Maximilian and I reminisced about our favorite moments from the trip. From the serene beauty of the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove to the golden splendor of Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, Kyoto had offered us a wealth of unforgettable experiences. We talked about the friendly locals we had met, the delicious food we had tasted, and the profound sense of history and culture that permeated every corner of the city. It was a bittersweet moment, filled with both joy and a touch of melancholy.

Before heading to bed, I spent some time writing in my travel journal, capturing the highlights of the day and reflecting on our time in Kyoto. I knew that these memories would fade over time, but with my journal, I could always return to this magical place and relive our incredible adventure. As I drifted off to sleep, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for the opportunity to explore this enchanting city with my beloved Maximilian.

And as the first rays of dawn touched the horizon, I knew it was time to say goodbye to Kyoto. With hearts full of memories and a promise to return someday, we packed our bags and set off on our journey back to Berlin. Kyoto, you will always hold a special place in our hearts.

This trip has reminded me of how important it is to step outside of our comfort zones and experience new cultures. It's something I want to do more of with my life and share with my readers. I hope this blog has inspired you to plan your own adventure. Until next time, happy travels!

As I reflect on our incredible journey through Kyoto, I realize that it wasn't just about seeing the sights and tasting the food. It was about immersing ourselves in a culture so different from our own, learning from the people we met, and expanding our perspectives on the world. It was about creating memories that would last a lifetime and strengthening the bond between Maximilian and me. And as we prepare to return to our everyday lives in Berlin, I know that we will carry the spirit of Kyoto with us, inspiring us to live with greater mindfulness, compassion, and appreciation for the beauty that surrounds us.
