Exploring the Cultural Tapestry of Kyoto with My Spouse
Day 4: A Day of Zen and Monkeys: Exploring Arashiyama's Wonders
Join Jennifer as she explores Arashiyama's enchanting bamboo forest, serene temples, and playful monkeys in Kyoto with her spouse.

Finding Serenity in Arashiyama
Today, Maximilian and I ventured into the Arashiyama district, a place I had been eagerly anticipating since we began planning our Kyoto adventure. Arashiyama promised a blend of natural beauty and cultural richness, and it certainly delivered. From the towering bamboo forest to the playful monkeys on the mountainside, every moment was a unique experience that I am excited to share.
Our day started with a hearty breakfast at Goichi Pizza. It might seem odd to have pizza in Japan, but I had read some great reviews, and we were both craving something a bit different. Plus, it was conveniently located, and I am all about convenience when travelling. The restaurant was small and cozy, with a friendly atmosphere. Maximilian ordered a classic Margherita, while I opted for a pizza with local Kyoto vegetables. The crust was perfectly chewy, and the toppings were fresh and flavorful. It was a delightful start to our day.

The best journeys answer questions that in the beginning, you didn't even think to ask.
A Walk Through the Bamboo Forest
After breakfast, we made our way to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. I had seen countless pictures of this place, but nothing could have prepared me for the real thing. As we stepped into the grove, we were immediately enveloped by towering stalks of bamboo that swayed gently in the breeze. The sunlight filtered through the dense canopy, creating an ethereal, almost otherworldly atmosphere.

The path wound its way through the forest, and we strolled along, hand in hand, marveling at the sheer scale and beauty of nature. It was so peaceful and serene, a welcome escape from the bustling city. I couldn't resist snapping photos at every turn, trying to capture the magic of the moment.
Tenryu-ji Temple: A Garden of Tranquility
Next on our itinerary was Tenryu-ji Temple, a Zen temple located right next to the bamboo forest. This temple is renowned for its stunning gardens, and I was eager to explore them. As we entered the temple grounds, we were greeted by immaculately manicured landscapes, serene ponds, and meticulously arranged rocks.

We wandered through the gardens, admiring the beauty and tranquility of the surroundings. The main hall of the temple was equally impressive, with its intricate architecture and peaceful atmosphere. I took a moment to sit on a bench and simply soak it all in, feeling a sense of calm wash over me.
It was interesting to note that Tenryu-ji Temple has a Setsubun celebration on February 3rd every year. Although we are a few weeks away from that date, I would have loved to experience the traditional bean-throwing rituals that are meant to ward off evil spirits. Maybe next time!
I learned that the Tenryu-ji was built in 1339 and is the head temple of the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism. It was established by the shogun Ashikaga Takauji in memory of Emperor Go-Daigo. Over the centuries, many of the temple's buildings were lost to fires and wars, but they have been carefully reconstructed to preserve the temple's historical significance.
Monkey Business at Iwatayama Monkey Park
Our final stop in Arashiyama was the Iwatayama Monkey Park. This involved a bit of a hike up a mountain, but I had heard it was well worth the effort. The trail was steep in places, and I was definitely feeling the burn in my legs, but the views along the way were incredible. We were surrounded by lush forest, and as we climbed higher, we could see the city of Kyoto stretching out before us.

Finally, we reached the top and were greeted by a troop of wild Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys. These monkeys were surprisingly unfazed by human presence. They roamed freely around the park, grooming each other, playing, and generally causing mischief. We bought some monkey food and had the chance to feed them from our hands. It was such a unique and memorable experience to be so close to these amazing creatures in their natural habitat.
I read that the best time to visit the monkey park is in the late afternoon, as the monkeys become more active and the lighting is perfect for photography. However, we visited in the mid-afternoon, and it was still an incredible experience.
Lunch with a View at Arash's Kitchen
After our monkey encounter, we were both feeling quite hungry, so we decided to have lunch at Arash's Kitchen. This restaurant came highly recommended for its Persian and Indian cuisine, and I was intrigued to try it. The restaurant was cozy and inviting, with a warm and friendly atmosphere. We ordered a selection of kebabs, curries, and naan bread, and everything was absolutely delicious. The flavors were rich and authentic, and the portions were generous. It was the perfect way to refuel after our hike.

I was particularly impressed to learn that Arash's Kitchen is a halal restaurant, catering to Muslim travelers. They even have a prayer room on-site, which I thought was a thoughtful touch. It's always great to find restaurants that are inclusive and welcoming to people of all backgrounds.
Evening Drinks at The Common One Bar Kyoto
As evening approached, we decided to treat ourselves to a drink at The Common One Bar Kyoto. I had read about this bar, and it sounded like a unique and sophisticated place to unwind. The bar was hidden away in a quiet alley, and it had a discreet, almost secretive entrance. Inside, the atmosphere was intimate and elegant, with soft lighting, comfortable seating, and a well-stocked bar.

We ordered a couple of cocktails, and the bartender took his time to craft them with care and precision. The drinks were beautifully presented and tasted exquisite. It was the perfect way to end our day in Arashiyama, sipping on delicious cocktails in a stylish and relaxed setting.
The Common One Bar Kyoto is known for its traditional atmosphere with tatami rooms and a tea room, blending tradition and modernity. I found that the bartenders provided attentive service and creative food offerings, making the visit a special experience.
Dinner at Premium Pound Gion
For dinner, we ventured to Premium Pound Gion, a teppanyaki restaurant known for its intimate setting and high-quality Japanese beef. The restaurant was tucked away in the Gion district, exuding a calm Kyoto-style ambiance that was perfect for adults.
