Golden Reflections and Silent Stones
Today was a day of contrasts, a beautiful blend of shimmering gold and quiet contemplation. Maximilian and I set out to explore two of Kyoto's most iconic landmarks: Kinkaku-ji, the Golden Pavilion, and Ryoan-ji, home to the enigmatic Zen rock garden. It was a day filled with visual splendor and moments of introspective calm, a perfect reflection of Kyoto's captivating spirit.

Our morning began with a hearty vegan breakfast at AIN SOPH. Journey KYOTO. Finding a completely vegan place in Kyoto felt like a small miracle. I opted for their famous heavenly pancakes, and Maximilian went for the vegan burger. The pancakes were unbelievably fluffy – like eating clouds – and came with a generous serving of fruit, soy ice cream and whipped cream. Maximilian really enjoyed his burger. Fuelled up, we were ready to tackle the day's adventures.

Our first stop was Kinkaku-ji. As we approached, the sight of the Golden Pavilion reflecting in the Mirror Pond took my breath away. It was even more stunning in person than in all the photos I’d seen. The sun glinted off the gold leaf, creating a dazzling spectacle. The history of the temple is fascinating; originally built as a retirement villa for Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu in 1397, it was later converted into a Zen Buddhist temple after his death. It has burned down several times throughout its history, including once in 1950 by a fanatic monk, but was rebuilt in 1955. Standing there, gazing at its radiant beauty, I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe and serenity.
The beauty of Kinkaku-ji is not just in its golden exterior, but in its ability to evoke a sense of peace and wonder.
We strolled through the gardens surrounding the pavilion, admiring the meticulously manicured landscapes and the carefully placed stones. The gardens themselves are designed in the Muromachi period style, blending different architectural influences. Each floor of the pavilion represents a different style: the first floor is in the Shinden style, used for palace buildings during the Heian Period; the second floor is in the Bukke style, used in samurai residences; and the third floor is in the style of a Chinese Zen hall. It's a testament to the rich cultural tapestry of Kyoto.
After soaking in the golden splendor of Kinkaku-ji, we made our way to Ryoan-ji. The contrast between the two temples was striking. Where Kinkaku-ji dazzled with its opulence, Ryoan-ji captivated with its simplicity. The temple is renowned for its Zen rock garden, a minimalist masterpiece consisting of fifteen rocks arranged in a sea of raked white gravel. The garden was originally an aristocrat's villa during the Heian Period, but it was converted into a Zen temple in 1450.

As I sat on the wooden veranda, gazing at the garden, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The rocks are arranged in such a way that from any vantage point, at least one of them is always hidden from view. The meaning of the garden is open to interpretation, with some believing it represents islands in a sea, while others see it as an abstract expression of Zen philosophy. I found myself lost in contemplation, trying to decipher the hidden message of the stones. Maximilian and I discussed what we thought it meant, it was a great exercise for the mind.
We explored the rest of the temple grounds, including the Hojo, the former residence of the head priest, which features beautiful paintings on its sliding doors. We also discovered a stone trough with a Zen inscription cleverly incorporated into its square water basin. The temple grounds also include a spacious park area with a pond, where we took a leisurely stroll, enjoying the tranquility of the surroundings.
For lunch, we headed to Katsukura - Kyoto Porta, a restaurant specializing in tonkatsu (pork cutlets) located in Kyoto Station. Although not traditionally Kyoto cuisine, it was incredibly delicious. I had the pork loin cutlet, while Maximilian opted for the chicken. The tonkatsu was perfectly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, and the sesame sauce was a delightful complement. The restaurant was bustling with both locals and tourists, and we had to wait in line for about 40 minutes, but it was definitely worth it.

As evening approached, we prepared for our Kaiseki dinner at Kikunoi Roan. The restaurant is known for its refined and artistic presentation of seasonal ingredients. We chose a mid-tier option from the menu to get a good feel for the experience. Each course was a work of art, showcasing the chef's mastery of Japanese culinary techniques. From the delicate sashimi to the flavorful simmered dishes, every bite was a delight to the senses. The staff were incredibly attentive, explaining each dish with grace and precision.

To cap off the evening, we ventured out to L'Escamoteur, a quirky cocktail bar known for its experimental drinks and magical atmosphere. The bar is often compared to the world of Harry Potter, with its cramped, dimly lit interiors and eclectic decor. The bartenders are true mixologists, creating unique and inventive cocktails using local ingredients like yuzu and matcha. I ordered a smoky old fashioned, while Maximilian tried a yuzu gimlet. The drinks were not only delicious but also presented with flair and showmanship. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with cultural immersion and sensory delights.

Tomorrow, we're planning to visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, with its thousands of vibrant red torii gates winding up the mountainside, and Tofuku-ji Temple, known for its stunning Zen gardens and autumn foliage. I'm especially excited to explore the Kyoto Crafts Store, hoping to find some unique souvenirs to bring back home to Berlin.
As I reflect on today's experiences, I'm struck by the beauty and serenity that permeate Kyoto. From the shimmering gold of Kinkaku-ji to the silent stones of Ryoan-ji, every moment has been a feast for the senses and a balm for the soul. I feel so fortunate to be able to share these experiences with Maximilian, and I can't wait to see what adventures tomorrow will bring.
It was a day of beauty, contemplation, and delicious food. Kyoto has a way of captivating your senses and leaving you feeling both inspired and at peace. I am already looking forward to what tomorrow holds.
