Exploring the Cultural Tapestry of Kyoto with My Spouse
Day 9: A Day of Serenity and Shopping in Kyoto: Heian Shrine, Shorenin Temple, and Daimaru Delights
Immerse yourself in Kyoto's cultural beauty and retail therapy as Jennifer explores serene shrines and bustling department stores.

Kyoto's Blend of Peace and Commerce
Today in Kyoto was a delightful mix of spiritual reflection and retail exploration. It’s funny how travel can take you from the quietest temple gardens to the bustling aisles of a department store in a single day. I love experiencing these contrasts, and Kyoto certainly offers them in abundance.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Anzukko. I had read about their inventive gyoza, and it was the perfect way to fuel up for a day of exploring. The gyoza were served in a cast iron pot, with a crispy, almost brûlée-like layer on the bottom. I opted for the signature Anzukko Gyoza and the steamed prawn and scallop dumplings, both were delicious!

A Morning of Tranquility at Heian Shrine
After breakfast, Maximilian and I headed to Heian Shrine. Built to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of Kyoto's founding, the shrine is a partial replica of the Imperial Palace from the Heian Period. As we approached the giant torii gate, its vermilion color popped against the clear February sky. The weather was chilly, but the sun was out, making it perfect for strolling the grounds.

We explored the main hall, admiring the traditional architecture and the peaceful atmosphere. The Shin-en Garden was a highlight, a stunning Japanese-style garden with a serene pond and meticulously arranged landscaping. Even though it's February, and not everything is in full bloom, the garden still had a quiet beauty. I learned that the Setsubun Festival is held here, it's a lively tradition where they throw roasted beans to cast out evil spirits.
The beauty of Kyoto lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the sacred and the secular, offering a complete and enriching experience for the soul and the senses.
Finding Peace at Shorenin Temple
Next on our itinerary was Shorenin Temple, a temple of the Tendai sect of Japanese Buddhism located at the foot of Kyoto's Higashiyama mountains. This temple is one of the city's *monzeki* temples, traditionally headed by members of the imperial family. The connection to royalty is palpable, giving the temple a dignified and serene atmosphere. The winding path led us through various temple buildings and gardens, each offering a unique perspective and a sense of calm. The Kachoden drawing room had beautiful portraits and paintings, and it opened to a garden with a serene pond. I could have sat there for hours, just soaking in the tranquility.

Retail Therapy at Daimaru Kyoto Store
After such a serene morning, we decided to switch gears and immerse ourselves in some retail therapy at Daimaru Kyoto Store. It was quite a contrast going from the hushed reverence of the temples to the bustling energy of a department store, but that's part of what makes Kyoto so fascinating. Daimaru is a department store located in Shijo Kawaramachi. I was immediately drawn to the basement food floor, or *depachika*, a wonderland of fresh produce, meats, pastries, and prepared foods. We picked up some *wagashi* (Japanese sweets) for later, and I was amazed by the selection of teas. It was a feast for the senses.

I also spent some time browsing the clothing and cosmetics sections. Although I didn’t find any clothes that fit my taller frame, I enjoyed looking at the latest Japanese fashion trends. I did find some unique cosmetics brands that I hadn't seen in Berlin, so I picked up a few items to try. We walked around until the mall closed at 8pm.
A Culinary Evening
For lunch, we enjoyed a lovely meal at Nakamura. Opting for a traditional Kaiseki experience. The restaurant is famous for its shiromiso zoni, which takes plenty of patience and skill to prepare. Each dish was beautifully presented, with seasonal ingredients. I felt like I was being transported back in time.

To cap off the day, we had dinner at Sakuragawa. With a cozy and inviting atmosphere, this restaurant offers a unique dining experience. I chose the sushi, which was carefully prepared using the finest ingredients. This was the perfect way to end a day of contrasts, reflecting on the peace of the temples and the excitement of the city.

As I sit here writing this, I'm already anticipating tomorrow's adventures. We're planning to visit Rengeō-in (Sanjūsangen-dō) Temple and Fushimi Inari Taisha. I've heard that Fushimi Inari is especially beautiful, with thousands of vermilion torii gates winding up the mountainside. I'm also looking forward to trying a new breakfast spot, Alice On Wednesday, and perhaps unwinding at The Roots of all evil. bar in the evening. It’s hard to believe this trip is almost over! Just one more day to soak in the beauty and culture of Kyoto. I feel so fortunate to have had this experience with Maximilian, creating memories that we will cherish forever.
I am also happy that I remembered to pack my travel journal, but I completely forgot my portable phone charger, I will need to buy one tomorrow for sure.
