Exploring the Natural Wonders of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula
Day 5: Chasing Waterfalls and Volcanic Whispers: A Day of Icelandic Sagas
Discover the magic of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula with its iconic Kirkjufell, cascading waterfalls, and ancient lava fields.

A Symphony of Stone and Water
Today felt like stepping into a living postcard, a testament to Iceland's raw and untamed beauty. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has a way of weaving its magic, blending dramatic landscapes with whispers of folklore. It was a day of iconic sights and unexpected discoveries, shared with my favorite travel companions – Markus and Aino.
Our day began with a hearty breakfast at Kaffi 59 in Ólafsvík. It's a cozy spot, and the smell of freshly brewed coffee was just what we needed to kickstart our adventures. Aino was particularly excited, having devoured a travel guide on Icelandic folklore the night before. She was determined to spot a hidden folk, or perhaps even a troll or two! Fueled up, we set our sights on the legendary Kirkjufell Mountain.

As we approached Kirkjufell, it dominated the horizon. I could understand why it's often called the most photographed mountain in Iceland. Its unique, almost pyramidal shape jutted out into the sea, a solitary beacon against the sky. The light was soft and diffused, painting the landscape in hues of green and grey. Markus, ever the pragmatist, was fascinated by its geological formation – a nunatak, a mountain that had braved the ice age glaciers. Aino, meanwhile, was convinced it looked like a giant's hat.
We parked near Kirkjufellsfossar, the waterfalls that cascade in the foreground of Kirkjufell, creating that iconic view. Even though the path down to the waterfall is currently closed to avoid erosion, we were still able to admire it from a distance and capture some amazing photos. The water tumbled over the basalt rocks, a constant, rhythmic pulse against the stoic presence of the mountain. The scene was simply breathtaking, a perfect blend of power and serenity. I couldn't help but feel a sense of awe, a connection to something ancient and enduring.

Aino, armed with her newfound knowledge of Icelandic folklore, pointed out that Kirkjufell is sometimes referred to as the 'Sorcerer's Hat' or 'Wizard's Hat' and legend has it that the mountain is a gathering place for mystical beings. She was scanning the slopes with her binoculars, hoping to catch a glimpse of something magical. Even Markus, despite his initial skepticism, seemed to be enjoying the atmosphere, the palpable sense of wonder that permeated the air.
After soaking in the beauty of Kirkjufell, we decided to grab a quick lunch. Agnið streetfood in Ólafsvík was the perfect choice. We enjoyed some delicious street food amidst the stunning Icelandic scenery. It was a delightful and filling meal that gave us the energy we needed for the rest of our adventure.

Sometimes, the most profound experiences are found in the simplest of moments, a shared meal amidst breathtaking scenery, a whispered story passed down through generations.
Our next destination was Berserkjahraun, the Berserker lava field. The drive there was stunning, with the landscape morphing into a surreal panorama of jagged rocks covered in vibrant green moss. This lava field, formed some 4,000 years ago, felt like another world, a testament to the raw power of nature. The air was still and quiet, broken only by the occasional cry of a bird.

As we walked through the lava field, Aino recounted the saga of the two Swedish berserkers who were tasked with clearing a path through the treacherous terrain. The story, filled with betrayal and violence, added another layer to the already dramatic landscape. It was fascinating to imagine these legendary warriors battling against the elements, their fate intertwined with the very rocks beneath our feet.
The landscape was surreal, almost otherworldly. The lava rocks, contorted into bizarre shapes, were covered in a thick carpet of moss, creating a striking contrast of textures and colors. It felt like we were walking on the surface of another planet. Aino, of course, was on the lookout for the ghosts of the berserkers, her imagination running wild with tales of Viking warriors and hidden treasures.
Markus, ever the practical one, was more interested in the geological aspects of the lava field. He explained how the lava had flowed from four scoria craters, creating the unique landscape we were now traversing. It was a fascinating lesson in geology, delivered amidst the very rocks that had shaped the land. I found myself appreciating the blend of science and folklore, the way the natural world intertwined with the stories of the past.
Before dinner, we stopped by Prjónaklúbburinn, a charming little yarn shop in Stykkishólmur, hoping to find some authentic Icelandic wool for my knitting projects. The shop was a treasure trove of colorful yarns and traditional patterns. I picked up a few skeins of soft, locally sourced wool, envisioning cozy sweaters and warm socks for the winter months. Aino even decided to try her hand at knitting, choosing a vibrant blue yarn for a scarf. I am already looking forward to returning tomorrow when there is an advent event taking place there!

As the day drew to a close, we made our way to Narfeyrarstofa in Stykkishólmur for dinner. This restaurant, housed in one of the town's oldest buildings, is known for its delicious local cuisine and cozy atmosphere. It was the perfect place to unwind after a day of exploring. The restaurant was lovely, with a warm and inviting ambiance. The staff were incredibly friendly, and the food was simply divine. We savored fresh seafood and local lamb, each dish a celebration of Icelandic flavors. Markus and I enjoyed a glass of wine, while Aino happily munched on her fish and chips.

As we ate, we recounted the highlights of our day – the majestic Kirkjufell, the surreal landscape of Berserkjahraun, and the cozy charm of Prjónaklúbburinn. It was a day filled with beauty, adventure, and a deep connection to the land and its stories.
Looking ahead to tomorrow, we have another day of exploration planned. We'll be visiting Lýsuhóll, known for its mineral-rich waters, and exploring the scenic Snaefellsvegur road. I'm particularly excited about discovering the Stone Bridge. I am sure that tomorrow will bring even more unforgettable experiences.
As I write this, curled up in our tent with a cup of herbal tea, I feel a deep sense of gratitude for this incredible journey. Iceland, with its dramatic landscapes and captivating stories, has a way of stirring the soul. It's a place that reminds me of the power and beauty of nature, and the importance of connecting with the past. And as I drift off to sleep, I can't help but wonder what adventures tomorrow will bring. I am sure Aino is already dreaming about spotting some elves!
