Discover the dramatic landscapes of Snæfellsnes National Park, from volcanic craters to breathtaking coastal viewpoints, on a family adventure.
A Day of Fire and Ice
Today, on Day 3 of our Icelandic saga, we ventured deep into the heart of Snæfellsjökull National Park, a place where the raw power of nature is on full display. The landscape was a dramatic tapestry of volcanic craters, windswept coastlines, and endless skies. It was a day of exploration and wonder, shared with my beloved family, as we soaked in the magic of Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula.

Our day began with a hearty breakfast at FRISTA Food Truck in Arnarstapi. I had heard whispers about their legendary fish and chips, and they did not disappoint. The batter was perfectly crispy, encasing flaky cod that tasted incredibly fresh. Aino devoured hers in minutes, while Markus and I savored every bite, accompanied by steaming cups of strong Icelandic coffee. It was the perfect fuel for the adventures that lay ahead.

With our appetites sated, we set off to explore Snæfellsjökull National Park. The park itself is a marvel, a place where the earth's raw energy is palpable. You can feel it in the wind, see it in the jagged rocks, and sense it in the vast, open spaces. It's no wonder many consider this area to be one of the earth's major energy centers. I felt a familiar sense of awe, a feeling I often experienced back in Alaska, but intensified by the unique Icelandic landscape.
Our first stop was the Saxhóll Crater. The climb to the top was made easy by a metal staircase that spiraled around the crater's edge. Even Aino managed it without complaint, her eyes wide with anticipation. At the summit, we were rewarded with panoramic views that stretched as far as the eye could see. The crater itself was a riot of color, with vibrant mosses clinging to the dark volcanic rock. In the distance, the majestic Snæfellsjökull glacier shimmered under the midday sun. It was a sight that truly took my breath away.

I couldn't help but think of Jules Verne's Journey to the Center of the Earth, which famously begins at the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Standing there, on the edge of that ancient crater, I felt a strange connection to the characters in the novel, a sense of embarking on my own journey into the unknown.
Sometimes, the most profound journeys are not those that take us to faraway lands, but those that lead us to a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
Next on our itinerary was the Lóndrangar View Point. The Lóndrangar basalt cliffs are truly a sight to behold. These towering sea stacks rise dramatically from the ocean, remnants of an ancient volcanic crater that has been eroded by the relentless waves. According to local legends, these majestic sea stacks were once trolls who attempted to drag a ship ashore, only to be turned to stone by the rising sun. The area was easily accessible via a short hike from the parking area, which was located near the Svalþúfa mountain. The well-marked trails took us through beautiful coastal landscapes, offering stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean and the surrounding cliffs.

As we stood at the viewpoint, gazing out at the immense cliffs, I couldn't help but feel a sense of insignificance. The sheer scale of the landscape was humbling, a reminder of the immense power of nature. Aino, ever curious, peppered me with questions about the formation of the cliffs, the types of birds that nested there, and the legends associated with the area. It was moments like these that made our family trips so special, opportunities to learn and grow together, surrounded by the beauty of the natural world.
For lunch, we stopped at the Skipper Restaurant in Ólafsvík. This cozy restaurant is known for its fresh seafood and stunning views of the harbor. I ordered the fish and chips (again!), while Markus opted for the lamb shank. Aino, predictably, chose the burger. The food was delicious, the service was friendly, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. It was the perfect place to refuel after a morning of exploration.

After lunch, we decided to explore the town of Ólafsvík a bit. We popped into a few local shops, admiring the traditional Icelandic crafts and souvenirs. I even picked up a hand-knitted wool hat for Aino, a practical and stylish reminder of our trip. Before heading out of town we stopped by Narfeyrarstofa for a drink. The place had a warm atmosphere and friendly staff.

For dinner, we had reservations at Sjávarkjallarinn in Ólafsvík, a restaurant known for its innovative seafood dishes. I was particularly excited to try their famous lobster soup. The restaurant had a cozy and intimate atmosphere, perfect for a special evening. The food was exceptional, a testament to the chef's skill and creativity. The lobster soup was rich and flavorful, a true culinary masterpiece. Markus and I savored every bite, while Aino, surprisingly, declared it her favorite meal of the trip so far.
As the day drew to a close, we drove back to our campsite, the setting sun painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. We pitched our tent, built a small campfire, and settled in for the night, the sounds of the Icelandic wilderness lulling us to sleep. We skipped the bar Narfeyrarstofa, as we were all tired from the day.
Today was a day of discovery, a day of adventure, and a day of connection. We explored volcanic craters, marveled at coastal wonders, and savored the flavors of Iceland. But more importantly, we shared these experiences as a family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.
Tomorrow, we plan to explore Gatklettur, Ölkelduvatn Mineral Spring and Sönghellir Cave. I'm excited to see what new adventures await us on this incredible journey through Iceland's Snæfellsnes Peninsula. I’m also hoping to find some time to visit Álfar og Tröll ehf to pick up some souvenirs.
The Snæfellsnes Peninsula has a metal festival called Sátan, however it took place earlier in the month. There is also a National Costume Festival later in the month in Stykkishólmur.
Until then, góða nótt (good night) from Iceland!
